Dr. Lera talks about perianal tumors with Axel, an intact eight-year-old akita who weighs 140 lbs (63.5 kg).
A perianal gland tumor is a type of tumor found near the anus in dogs that arises from specialized glandular tissue found in the perineum. It is also known as a hepatoid tumor because of the similarity in cell shape to hepatocytes (liver cells). It is most commonly seen in intact (not neutered) dogs and is the third most common tumor type in intact male dogs.

My 10 year old chihuahua just got diagnosed today with a perianal tumor. I’m so glad it’s usually benign, as I just lost my other chi in July 2020 (some kind of animal outside killed her. She was a healthy 16 year old). My dog with the tumor has been neutered for pretty much his entire life. I need to find a surgeon who is experienced at removing these types of tumors as my vet said she doesn’t have any experience performing that kind of surgery. I just can’t lose my other fur baby right after losing my other one in July 😢 Please pray for us. Thank you. And thank you for the very informational video 👌

How is your fur baby? My dog has to go in for tests on Friday, she’s 14 and the vet said there’s a good chance due to her age it’s cancerous growth ☹️

@@ninaelwart9460 hi Nina, so nice of you to check in with me and the pup ☺️ I had actually forgotten about this video and even writing all that stuff 7 months ago! Time sure flies! As for my dog, he is getting a routine exam on Thursday and I have him then scheduled for a pre-op etc. at a vet surgery which my vet referred me to. I am still so scared of losing him. He started hiding and limping last night and inside I was freaking out. He won’t let anyone of us touch his paw though, all I can see is like a little growth sticking out on his right front leg, but there’s no blood or swelling, which is good. Still, I’d just wish he’d let me look at it. I am planning on giving him a bath before his appointment on Thursday lol 😂 He’ll just love that (NOT! Although he has gotten better). Maybe during his bath I can get a better look at his leg. I just brought him in to the vet to get his nails trimmed (it’s literally IMPOSSIBLE for even two ppl to trim his nails, so I don’t mind paying for it at all lol. Saves me the stress and from getting all scratched up in the process 😀 Anyway, I’m so sorry to hear about your little fur baby. Cancer is always a big health problem that I worry about ALL THE TIME (got my dog AND for me too)! I’m a (and this is probably an understatement, lol) hypochondriac as they used to say in the olden days lol. But really, I so many health problems and take so many medications that I do t think I’ll live to even 50, or barely 55 (I’m 42 atm). Ah well, can’t fight the inevitable, right? I sure hope your fur baby gets way better after the surgery though. From what you wrote it sounds serious, yes (and we’ll be thinking of you two) but also it didn’t sound like it was in an advanced stage of cancer yet??!! I really hope I’m right about that! Did the vet say anything about approximately how long your fur baby will most likely live? I sincerely hope and pray that once the cancer is removed she’ll be so happy and healthy with no pain at all, and you two will go off on a ton more adventures together!! Yay! 😃 Hope and faith, gotta have ‘em both! Don’t worry, tho - I’m NOT one of those religious nuts haha 😂 Well, I’ve been blabbing already for way too long, so I think I’ll sign off for now (but I’m on RU-vid daily so usually I’m easy to track down lol). THANK YOU SO MUCH for remembering me and my other fur baby. You are very kind, empathetic, understanding…I can tell just by what you say and how you say it that you are a very sensitive, generous, considerate person! You are definitely a RARITY these days, for real!! It’s nice to feel remembered sometimes, you know? And I’m saying that mostly about my deceased dog, but also a little teeny bit about me too. It’s just a nice, warm and fuzzy-type of feeling, you know? And it’s almost even more special than getting a card from someone I see on a regular basis (not that I’m unappreciative of that sort of stuff. I’m always so thankful that ppl would even think to do some of those things, like a card just to say hi, or whatever). I hope you and your fur baby feel better really soon! I’m already thinking of you guys! And PLEASE PLEASE keep us updated on your little one’s condition and overall health!! Also, idk where you live, but I can and will do just about anything if someone needs any help. So if you need anything at all, I will do the best I can with the best I’ve got! I do the best I can anyways, which is all we can do in life; just be our best and try the best we possibly can do! If you live by that, your life will feel pretty good and nicely balanced, which is a great feeling (but I admit, a tad hard for me to get, let alone keep)!! Ttysoon my dear! Kisses to your fur baby from us! 💋 😚 💜 🐶 🤗

Our Siberian wolf mix Jefferey has been diagnosed with anal cancer. They've told us removing the tumors will not help him😢. We've had him since a pup and he's definitely a fighter health wise, he developed parvovirus at 2 months old and survived it. Now with the anal cancer he had surgery to remove 3 large tumors bellow his Ana's, but they say they can't remove the anal cancer. He's been on prednisone for over a month it seems to help shrink the tumors he has hanging from his Ana's. He eats well, and yes he's drinking alot of water now. He will be 13yrs old in a month. He acts like nothing is wrong except wanting to constantly lick his butt were the tumors are visable. I have noticed a increase in his thirst which I understand is caused by the prednisone. I guess my question is, is there another medication he can take to shrink these growths ? So far he's had no difficulty defecating even tho the tumors can be very large at times. That's what I don't understand, we also give him CBD for any pain, but I've noticed some days the tumors are huge, some days they aren't?? He is not neutered as well. I'm just looking for advice and if there is a different medication other than the prednisone he should be on...??🐺🐺 ❤❤

My 17 year old Standard Poodle has a perianal tumor. Its a good size (the size of a quarter in diameter) now but doesn't seem to bother him. He's about 60 lbs partially deaf & blind, but physically in good shape. You have spoken about not having the neutering could cause the tumor to return, but with his advanced age is that very likely & would this operation be safe for him at this age (anesthesia, blood loss, etc.) ?
@DrLera
@DrLera 2 года назад
Anesthesia wise normally would do blood work and chest x-rays as well as an EKG to screen the patient for anesthesia. There should be minimal blood loss during the procedure so not really concerned about that. You have to determine whether or not you think your dog is going to live long enough for it to be worthwhile doing the surgery. That is a bet that you will have to make. If you don't think he's going to live that much longer then it's not worth doing the surgery. But if you are betting that he is going to live a year or more than I would highly consider doing the surgery. Obviously it's helpful for you to have this conversation with your veterinarian as they should be someone that you trust and also cuz they can evaluate your pet in person.

Hello, my male dog has this. He has had his testicles removed years ago. It doesn’t bother him, he doesn’t lick at it and doesn’t scoot. What happens if we leave the mass, what will happen? And opt not to have surgery?

My 6 month old female has the same lump on her bum. She’s in her first heat. The vet said it could possibly be this. Do you think it could be a hemeroid?
@DrLera
@DrLera 3 года назад
Very unlikely that it's a hemorrhoid. We don't commonly see hemorrhoids in dogs

Plot twist -- neutering wont' necessarily prevent future tumors, especially if the dog has had testosterone for years and years coursing through his body. My dog had tumor and testicles removed two years ago and now a new tumor has ruptured and I'm taking him in today for evaluation. sigh....

My small chihuahua has a big ball / lump right under his anus, however its not a visible lump. If he is laying with his front on the floor and his bum in the air, then its very very visible, but otherwise not. Also if hes pooping, almost as if him pressing causes it to bulge out underneath the skin. He has had this for atleast 3 years, i just never thought anything of it. The vetenarians cannot get it to appear, because as i said, its not visible unless he performs some sort of action that pushes it out. I am veru confused as to what it could be. He has never seem bothered about it, even if i pinch it.
