Helping our patients to achieve optimal health is the goal of physicians and health care practitioners. This presentation will explain how periodic fasting, and in particular the newest concepts in fasting mimicking diets, can trigger the incredible rejuvenate properties of the body to support the body's innate healing properties.
Felice L Gersh, MD is one of a small number of Board Certified OB/GYN physicians who is also a graduate of the prestigious two year Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona School of Medicine.
Dr. Gersh received her undergraduate degree from Princeton University and her medical degree from the University of Southern California School of Medicine, where she also served for over a dozen years as an clinical assistant professor of OB/GYN.

I did a 7 day water fast and I am doing a three day fast this week. I do believe that fasting is a special and ancient way to detox our bodies.

forget about buying boxes of prepared meals. Fast for 24hs once a week, follow a ketogenic diet based on whole foods (preferably animal based) and you are done. All the benefits can be attained that way.

I agree with the "forget about boxes" part, but I really think you need to push your fast to 4-5 days every once in a while. I've done one week fasts on five occasions in the past two years or so, after experimenting with 24/48h fasts in the past and I can tell the difference both in how I feel and in the ketone levels of my blood. Then again maybe some people get into that deep ketosis sooner but I think they have the 5 day sweet spot down pretty accurately. I haven't felt the need to use any "crutches" to fool myself that I am eating, although I will have some boullion cubes for the sodium and lots of tea and coffee.

The only weakness here is, there's apparent value in stimulating mTor and growing some muscles ... strength is important as you age, if you really care about health span.

I fasted once in college for three days, just fresh pressed juice and homemade veggie broth. My God I was starving and felt very slow in the body, but by day 3 my thinking was super sharp and coming in faster than I could speak, and my vision was super sharp and bright. It was like the world was moving in slow motion, I was noticing everything. Now I wish I would've done a fourth day! It was hard though. I've never fasted like that again. Maybe I'll try once more. The muscle mass thing is a little concerning.

What about Muscle mass? That's a downside to it, loosing Muscle?

Begin weight lifting training immediately after the fast. And eat vegan protein or other, so long as enough protein and calories.

@@aphysique It has been proven that you don't lose muscle during a fast.

You can hack the diet plan or just do the fasting, it costs nothing.

I'm not quite buying her argument about why Neanderthals disappeared (actually, they live on in Europeans and Asians by a small percentage). Yes, they had a large encephalization quotient, perhaps larger than modern humans, (though Dan Lieberman thinks, on average, not so). My sense of Neanderthals is they were smart and resourceful but perhaps less social (more reclusive). Collaboration and creativity is what has helped modern humans (Homo sapiens) be so successful as a species. And yes, I think it likely modern humans were more resilient to famine and able to travel larger distances without food (or water) intake. They were more mobile and adapted to lack of food. It is important to consider that Neanderthals walked the earth longer than modern humans have so far. Humans may become victims of their own success and become extinct very suddenly (due to overpopulation and degradation of the environment on a global scale).

It's the first time I'm hearing that Neanderthals were smarter on account of having bigger brains. They had larger proportions all over, didn't they? Are large animals smarter? Why is it that among birds the size of the brain is irrelevant?

Saw Dr Gersch in an interview on "The Skinny on Fat". Where can we purchase this "fast kit?" I have IBS that gets triggered when I go without food for longer than 4 hours. I have gone on fruit & veg diets while younger. But if other products, I would like a link to review them.

It's called prolon (by dr.Valter Longo), but it is expensive. You can simulate it by eating 400kcal in morning and evening, and keep carbs almost zero. Keep proteins low. So up your healthy fats to 400kcal. For example: eat an avocado + green drink every morning and evening. Do this for five days and you have the same benefits. Costs you nothing.
