Clearly explained everything. The visuals showed step by step what needed to be done while the voice-over patiently followed without being condescending. I heavily recommend watching this if you are interested in this subject. I've always thought about making forts in the base game like in Britannia and this was exactly what I needed. 10/10 would recommend, earned my sub

I was very pleased to see stone forts as an option in totalvanillabeyond (the only mod I’ve tried so far). They’re of so much more value than wooden forts and add to the immersion. They also balanced it nicely by having them cost 3000 florins to build, making them a more meaningful investment particularly in the early game.

In the crusades expansion you get the stone forts as well, but rather than pre placed, you can build them anywhere and they never disappear.

You might want to modify the cost of the fort to balance its superiority or permanence (As suggested by Charles Nordberg). To do so, go into the descr_culutres file (in the data folder). From there it is fairly straight forward: Find the section relating to your relevant culture and change the fort cost. You can change watchtowers here too!

I wished that Stone forts can only exist as an upgrade to existing wooden forts and only in territory the faction building the fort controls the territory

It would be cool if you had the option to build either, with forts being temporary but also have no upkeep, while stone forts/ castles do have upkeep but are permanent but also have the option to destroy them.

Hello To Nerd is to Human. Great video and amazing work on the step-by-step rundown. However, I appear to be experiencing the same issue that the user Ethan Brown had previously mentioned within this comment section. Was there something I could have missed during the unpacking process?

Tried this on brittania campaign, only problem i have is that when i siege attack a stone fort thats been placed i can only use rams. It seems to think it is a wooden fort from vanilla medieval 2 total war. No problem with the stone forts that already where on the brittania campaign map. with them everything is fine and i can use ladders and siege towers. Been looking all over the net but i dont know how to fix this issue.

Hi Thomas First, thanks for this great video Secondly, would you, by any chance, know in which file I can edit the cost for building a fort ? Because if they are now stronger and permanent, it would make sense that they cost more (and it would avoid the clustering of the map with OP forts) Anyway, thanks again for all your great medieval 2 modding videos (and sorry for potential English mistakes in this comment, I'm French)

This slipped my mind in making the video. But thank you for pointing this out. Happily, It is simple to do. Go into the descr_culutres file (in the data folder). Why do I not see destroy_empty_forts or can_build_forts in my descr_campaign_db file?

I actually stopped after making the forts permanent. I like the wooden ones. Makes more sense to me in-game. If I get competent enough at this I'll try to make it so I could have stone forts too. But they should cost a huge amount of money considering you're basically making a Motte and Bailey. I prefer the cheap 500 florin wooden forts and the stone forts should cost 5,000 florins.

500 is a considerable amount (especially early in the game) and losing the fort if it's empty means I never use forts. This would be an interesting change that would make them viable.

What you could possibly do is the exact same thing as what’s in the britannia campaign. However, it’d take a lot longer as you’d need to add more code to several files. What you could do is put permanent forts in special locations around the map, then remove the function to build them.

A good question. I'm not sure where such info would need to be. You can changes the cost in descr_cultures but other than that I think it needs more investigating.

will those stone forts work only for north Europeans (England, France, HRE, Denmark, etc.) or will it also work for south Europeans like Spain, Portugal, Milan, Venice, Byzantine etc.?

Great guide...but i have a problem... Unpacker ,finishes unpacking all expansion... But i am missing everithing in the ui>settlements>northern europian folder except 2 folders...so no fort tga file...how do i get that

so I'm trying to get the stone forts and I'm at 10:51 trying to find the settlements folder after the British isles. I only have 4 folders in my British isles folder: animations, fmv, sounds, and world. I unpacked all the Med2 stuff, did I miss something about the British isles somewhere? where are all the folders?

once you got all the dll´s in the unpacker folder, just use the "unpack_britannia"-batch file

I'm not sure why, but I'm crashing the moment I try to start a campaign. The loading bar will reach the end and the game crashes a minute later, instead of starting the campaign. Edit: So the game doesn't like me messing with the strat map models for some reason. Reverted to the old files for those three and the crashing stopped.

I know the 1648 mod uses this feature but makes the forts "cities" and gives them 5 free upkeep slots. There is also a new sengoku mod in development that will use this feature. Sadly, the AI doesn't know how to use these at all.

The AI never really knew how to use forts. Not sure many people have modded the ai much in that regard. I'd be interested to see if a new mod got the ai to use forts well.

Yes, all factions. In this example I only changed it for the Northern European cultures. To do it for the rest you need to repeat the process in the other folders

Yes! The crusaders expansion has more fort designs to chose from. It's the same process as here. 🙂

There's an error in the code somewhere so the game doesn't know how to proceed. If you have backed up the file(s) then best start over I'm afraid. Unless you can spot the error (it's usually very unlikely in my experience)
