If anyone uses this throw the instructions in the trash !! Put the backing in put the adhesive on smooth it with a card as best as possible feather the edges let dry 4 hrs sand it with 220 grit repeat if need be apply the color with a q tip or sponge try to blend past your work area don't Pyle it on is key take your time then you can use the texture card if need be it will come out 1000x better 😉
June 24, 2022 Thanks for your time and trouble videotaping it; giving information as well as sharing thoughts through the whole process. You are awesome!
I also have the dreaded perforated leather seats in my Acura mdx...same issue you're having! Thanks for the great video as I just received my permatex kit from amazon.
Looks better than before, Stu, thanks for sharing. I have a couple small tears on the leather seat in my 2000 Honda CRV, this video was more helpful than the "professional" demo as you illustrate what I'm sure is a common problem - repairing in the cracks where the seat isn't flat. I don't have the heating iron, just a wooden dowel with the metal disc on the end so it'll be a little more challenging. It looks like the toughest part of the repair is the heating, made the fabric installation seem easy eh? :) Perhaps a strip of masking tape down one edge of the paper on the seat would help keep it from rotating but still allow it to flex without buckling and would give you another "hand". You'd start with your fingers on the tape and gently but firmly push along the paper to the other side and the seat would push up into the paper giving you firm contact with a slight curve. It would probably be a good idea to do a trial run with the paper and a cold heater before adding the color compound to get the feel of it and tackle any issues before there's goop all over the place. Excellent job on the color mixing, now you have a fallback profession! The adhesive part of the job worked well, do you think hitting smaller areas with the coloring and heat would help? You had a large tear, maybe the bigger flat area could have been done first and then color the crack after the flat area was heated and cured, like eating the elephant one bite at a time. Did you go back after this video and tackle the remaining trouble spots? They may start to split otherwise. Thanks again, this video was quite helpful and will hopefully give me better results, good job sir.
Appreciate the feedback! I think you're ideas above are great. Where were you when I was doing this project lol I haven't gone back to touch anything up, but I have been impressed with the robustness of the original repair. It's still in the same condition that I left it in. Also, fun fact, I drove a 2000 Honda CR-V for a few years and lovingly called it my Blurple Truck
Better results on that seam could have been gotten......if you had begun the project by masking off the left portion of the seam. That would allow you to place your paper stencils FLAT EDGE right down in the seam, without having to worry about the left side (that would have been taped) thus you could get right down in there and cure the vinyl. Better results would have been had too, if you had allowed the vinyl to set up. The color filling should be done in LAYERS for a better finish.Laying down a HUGE AMOUNT only creates a disaster. Think of painting a car? Thin coats go on smooth, flash off (SEMI DRY) and another thin coat gets added. Slather t on thick and you end up with runs. YOUR VINYL is too thick, thus your barely curing the top portion. Thus the lower portion is still very wet. NOT being a jerk, YOU can do better. Always tape down the ends of your pattern, and ALWAYS give your layers time to flash off. ITS NOT A RACE.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I'd find a gray sharpie marker and hit those white spots. Maybe use a pin to poke some small holes in the area with the filler, to match the pattern. You sound like a nice young man. Nice effort!
I was trying to send you mind messages "fold the paper" I was able to reach back 2 years ago because apparently it worked 😄 mine is in a crack as well that's why watching your video was the key for me. I wonder how a blow dryer would have done? Or perhaps the papers important? Do you think it was the paper or the heat that was important? And I am curious as a follow-up to know how long this lasted?
sooo question, is that all that paper is for is for the texturing??, so basically all you need to do is the first paper (as the backing), the filler, the paint, dont really need to texture ..... reason i am asking is my back passenger seat has a tear, they arent really textured seats and honestly I am not overly worried bout the texturing of them, just need to fix the tear before it gets worse, and possibly have it the same color (flat black), I am pretty sure they are not leather, but more the fake leather, .... pleather??,
Seems kinda hit and miss for me.. one I did years ago came out great, still holding. Last one looks just like your first attempt. 😂 That metal needs to be super hot for it to cure though. that I know. Doing it with a lighter on metal.. on a windy day.. makes it super difficult.
polevaultingstu yeah you should try it but make sure to use the bond solution you mix in the black paint they give you. So basically do what I did with the leather piece and then add the compound to that with the white stuff let it dry over night then paint it
My ADD.... Watching.. watching. . watching .. humm....? I wonder what this dog's barking at? Wonder what kind of a dog it is? Mind power.."come on boy come in the room come on" 😆 🤦🏼♀️ wait... What did he do? Ugh! restart video.
