I retired in September 2023. This has always been the plan. for years. Close outdated hubs after opening new automated hubs needing fewer part time workers.
@traybernYou are talking to those that have no clue and it’s like talking to a brick wall. I remember years ago Costco in NJ had a warehouse with automatic arms that unloads the trailer and didn’t need forklifts.
I've seen it numerous times. The company is doing fine. One person wants to make a name for himself by laying people off, closing shops and have employees work longer hours. "Look what I did! I saved the company money." The company starts to fall apart, people quit and the company files for bankruptcy.
All the Yellow Equipment is going up for Auction. (Richie Bro’s.) Probably pennies on the dollar considering that it’s probably is all clapped out and not properly serviced.
I think the Teamsters are the ones to look to for help. They forced UPS into a new contract and now they need to cut costs to pay the Teamsters for it. Not a surprise as this happens over and over again until the company goes under. Once the company goes belly up the union forgets about the workers.
@@tellucas outsourcing doesn't save money, but it gives corporate CONTROL. the so called "Labor Unsteady" Temp worker wave of the eighties (hit Canada by the nineties) is a good example of that. But it doesn't SOLVE any companies OTHER issues of stupid management.

So if corporate DOUBLED wages and benefits the impact would be felt, but otherwise??? NADA> Nothing. No impact. You are ASSUMING but you're not alone.

Growing up in the 60s & 70s, I remember the United Auto Workers would always go on strike, yet their pay and benefits package was better than registered nurses and other professionals. Now cars are assembled in Canada, Mexico, Japan and Europe. Detroit is now a ghost town. “Look for the union label.”
A lot of these driving and delivery jobs will be replaced by self driving vehicles and bots. Similar to the fast food cashiers demanding $20/hr minimum wage. Many of those jobs are now replaced with a kiosk.
This type of closure is evaluated buildings. Its been Happening now for the past couple of years before the new contract. full timer or part timer can transfer to another hub if they're willing to , and one full timer can replace two part timers. The new contract has nothing to do with this. With these new fully automated buildings, the new garages with better technology. They can take this equipment for ups and service them. There a lot quicker and faster. It's funny how people really don't know what's going on. They will Tell you exactly what they think is happening without all the true facts.🤙👍
Has nothing to do with the union. UPS is losing business as Amazon Air starts to move their own packages rather than use FedEx or UPS. It sounds good to blame the unions, but the reality is the market is changing.
I am retired from UPS. This contract was insane. Big Brown can't compete at this cost. The USPS is subsidized by the tax payer. It losses 8 billion a year. Amazon pays their drivers basically just above minimum wage. The good lefty Bezo's should love the union. But he prevents them from getting a foot in the door. I see Big brown closing up shop by next contract.
Or they could just up their rates some, especially on their business contracts. Worked for them in 3 different cities. Who's going to pick up the daily weight they carry. ? Nobody carries more daily freight.
I know someone who is high up and organizes unions and labor strikes. It's not about the individual workers, it's about politics on a much larger scale. They don't seem to care about the people, they just care about the bigger political picture. They advise groups to strike for higher wages knowing many will end up losing their jobs. I don't even think they know the real political reasons for the actions they recommend. I just see the workers and the union organizers as pawns in a much greater political game.
Yes, lets all just bendover and take it from the C-suite, while they write themselves million dollar bonuses and give out millions more in stock buy backs.
I have been an employee at UPS for 35 years, and the current CEO, is the absolute worst in my tenure. She knows absolutely nothing about the transportation, and package industry, and has zero experience with Unions. There was a time when UPS promoted from within, and everyone had to drive, before they started their management career. Stop putting people with zero experience in the CEO position, and paying them $20 million a year.

Unions continually want more and give less, by nature that’s a failure…all while CEO’s and UNION bosses getting fat off the workers backs.. unions don’t care one bit about the workers as long as that dues keeps coming out. When was the last time unions dropped the dues?
@@gliderider7077 The union dues are a pittance to pay, compared to the economic gains won in contracts. I have worked Union and non-union, and there is no comparison. I am by no means a huge union advocate, but the difference is night and day. No wonder companies spend millions to fend off unions, they want to keep the profits for shareholders, and themselves, all while keeping the workers down.
@@jeffl915 I agree with everything you said except the union part. Many unions are a problem, ask trucking company YRC. You can't because the union cause them to go out of business by being unreasonable.
When I worked in the paper industry we went through this repeatedly so I understand what its like. After loosing everything in '09 I moved on from manufacturing. The pay is great when things are good but when they aren't then comes the pain.
Tell the real story. As in it’s all seniority based. If a full timer gets laid off they have the right to follow the work. They can move or for one full timer they can bump 2 part timers.
So now, since the Teamsters unions employees are getting laid off. How many UPS management are getting laid off. This is nothing more than a political game with UPS management.
Priced yourselves out of a job... your not the only ones thats gona get cut. Times are gona get mighty tough for lots of people. Time to pay the fiddler so to speak
I pulled long doubles across Indiana & Ohio for the last 17 years. I noticed a big decrease in the amount of UPS triples & long doubles in recent years. I pulled from the West pad in Indiana to Richfield, & North Lima.
Has nothing to do with the raises. There quarterly shipping surcharges have covered the rases triple fold since pre covid on a price to ship. The raises don't even keep up with inflation. Company never made a billion in profit 10 years a go and got used to making 1 billion two to billion a quarter and everything is in a slump due to Biden economics and Amazon taking over plus lost shipping contracts due to ups management dragging their feet and not offering a decent contract. There out to sever 12 thousand management alone along with a ton of automation hubs going into effect immediately. Need to get rid of the CEO and taper back dividends to a dollar a quarter. Not the working class teamsters fault. This is a rough job these days. Still a decent job but not a great job anymore
Bet they are glad they paid union dues. Do feelsorry for them in this economy. But this could have been in the contract and the union heads knew it. Trust no one but you and your wife and have your doubts about her.
The same thing will happen to auto workers. When you demand outrageous salaries and benefits, the company can’t compete. A good job is better than no job.
These guys should not worry. They are Teamsters and the Strong Union will insure they get another job quickly at another union shop with a comparative wage scale in the area. Local 20 cares about their members and it has been proven over their long history of representation of the working men and women in the region.
The job cuts are well over 12,000 for management and union. Do your self a google search of “UPS layoffs” and ups is being dirty with not allowing transfers and hiring freezes on region
They were fighting for higher wages, well you got them and as a result they have to find ways to save. Soooooo that means job cuts, why is this a surprise??
Well I hope those AC trucks and $49.00 an hr. for drivers. was worth it. Drivers might wanna take a HVAC class...nobody gonna be around to fix that expensive AC
This was the union’s fault, forcing a business owners arm . You got your raise and now you lost your job . I’m an independent trucker . If I’m going to loose is cause I made a mistake . I won’t ever let my livelihood depend on a union .
Contract negotiation is just that a negotiation - both sides agree to any agreements, corporate wasn't forced to sign or do anything. Further it's not the employees or UPS corporate to thank for this recession or record inflation. You have to look higher up the chain to find the proper persons to blame, all us employees and companies are just trying to get by. It's not like when groceries go up 20+% we can all just eat 20% less food and everything just works out.
There goes UPS vehicle breakdowns, late deliveries or overtime authorized to get caught up!! Yeah, management has it all figured out. Screw the stock dividends, think of your people!!!
Sad Amazon taking over everything I was let go from CF when they closed and Yellow Yellow and Roadway 20,000 people let go UPS sold off there freight business it’s only a matter of time before they go out of business. FedEx carrier will pick up a little bit
Oh no.... imagine that. You start paying PACKAGE DELIVERY PEOPLE $100,000 a year......yes there are going to be layoffs. If the company doesn't make money, it can't pay workers, then cuts some, still doesn't make money, closes down, everyone out of a job.
Correction the new Union Contract was a salary of $170,000.00/year. And you are spot on it’s Basic Economics 101! Then add that we have been in recession since Jan 21 2021, when the regime in the WH went to war against Energy, Business especially Small Businesses, Raised Taxes and forced overburdening feckless regulations on businesses, spent billions we don’t have causing Inflation, opened the borders to millions to drive wages down for working class families etc! Then of course the corrupt unions wanted overblown wages benefits etc, remember YOU VOTED FOR IT if you support the regime in the WH and this is just the beginning!
If that work goes to another facility within a certain radius, usually 50 miles, said workers get to follow that work with their company seniority and dovetail in! Roughly 80% of union contracts have that provision
I strongly suspect that the UPS layoffs are primarily those extra people hired-on for the holiday season (Thanksgiving, Christmas & New Years), which if you go back and look, happens EVERY year about this time. Nothing unusual to see here folks.
Come to California and work at McDonalds starting at $20.00 per hour. You probably won’t have to do much, who is going to pay $30.00 for a .39¢ hamburger?
Seriously... it comes as a surprise after the union struck and the wages went way up and now the company can't afford to have as many workers? People can rail on company executives and shareholders and I do believe American companies need to find that balance between all the parts working in harmony but greed comes into play and sadly the workers will come in last. And if you want a liveable wage, increase your job skills. If you have a job that doesn't involve a lot of training that is a sign you need to find something else for security. And when you get laid off and the union bosses still have their high paying jobs that should give you an idea where you really fit into the equation.
They just got a big new contract in the middle of a recession. Isn’t layoffs what we should be expecting? I expect every group that just got a fat raise to see cuts.
Whenever something changes there will always be down sizing Chrisler, ford, and Gmc have started. They all got new contracts and most consumers are broke. Good luck people
