One of the best campsites in LBL . From the North Welcome Station ; take the Trace South to FR 139 , It's located directly across from the Woodland Nature Station Road ( FR 133) . ( Or The shortcut : turn Right onto FR 316 ( Pinnegar Cemetery Road which takes you directly to FR 139 ) The road is gravel most of the way , however the last 3 miles are pretty rough. You'll need a high clearance vehicle for the last bit ... and preferably a 4 wheel drive , especially if it has rained recently. Also , there's a stretch across a gravel bar that's pretty loose so bigger tires aired down will be your best bet . Most 2 wheel drive vehicles and passenger cars aren't going to make this one. ( definitely not all the way to the beach )It's usually pretty busy , but there are at least 2 really good places to set up camp and they're both big enough for several vehicles. Since it is so busy you'll need to bring fire wood as it stays picked pretty bare and remember to pack it out , if you pack it in.

When I was younger a friend of mine and I drove his old Buick 225 down a road like that in the middle of the winter. We ended up getting stuck and had to walk out 8 miles until we flagged a TVA officer down and he called us a tow truck. I never will forget that. Thanks for stirring up some old bitter sweet memories. I love the LBL.

Heard " they're " writing $18] tickets for going past the bank at the end... There's a sign on the road that says " road ends in 3 miles "... but the tree on the beach ( full of broken parts and stickers ) is only 2.7 miles from the sign ? I guess I get it... but maybe change the sign ?

@@thesboard09is that just exclusive to Persimmon??. I keep seeing people comment this but cannot find anything on LBL’s gov website or anywhere stating this. Everything ive seen encourages camping on the beaches saying what great spots they are.

And I betyou still didn' t see it " all " .. Do you have any favorite spots or secret places that most people don't know about ?.... I've asked a lot of people that question and the answer is always different.

There is also a beautiful Beach area to camp at on 208 it is the old water access area. There are also numbered camp sites with signs and arrows pointing the way. But if you drive to the camp site. The rangers consider this driving off of the roadway and will write you a 180 dollar ticket. I got one last week. They are setting people up for easy tickets! I am going to try to make it to my court date. Might not win but at least I can complain about no signs or gates telling you not to drive to your camp site.

I'd definitely argue with them... the sign on the road says " road dead ends in 3 miles "... it's only 2.7 to the beach.

I could probably get a 76 Skylark down it... but it ain't coming back out LOL... it's fine up to one particular hill, basically a gravel road up to that... then it ain't.

The road to Persimmon Beach is gravel out to 318, after that it gets a little rougher... you won't need a monster truck , but you also won't easily make it in a Carolla either ... My Jeep makes it look easy , but there are a few spots with deep ruts ( one hill in particular ) that a " street " car is probably not going to be able to get through... Also , since I made the video , there is some discussion if it's even legal to drive all the way out there. There's a sign on the road that says " road dead ends in 3 miles "... the beach camp site is only 2.7 miles from there ? There needs to be some clarification on that because you don't want to be caught " off road "... You can download the MVUM from the LBL website that has every legal road marked on it , it'll keep you out of trouble. Don't trust GPS because they show a lot of roads that aren't there and some that aren't " legal "... you'll get a ticket no matter what the GPS says. Have fun and be safe in there ! LBL is great this time of year.

139 ends on the bluff. LEOs are now enforcing this. You can camp out on the "beach" but you have to park on the bluff and carry your gear out.

I suspected as much. I'm not out to damage anything and I definitely am not out there trying to break the law or get any of the roads shut down. That's why I set the trip odometer when I went out. The " beach " camp is only 2.7 miles from the " road dead ends in 3.0 miles " sign ? A third of a mile is a lot to be " off " by. There are quite a few instances where the signs and MVUM are unclear . Common sense will get you a long way but , there's a few instances that are " open to interpretation " . Another one is on the road to Craven's Bay...There's a road ( to the left coming in ) that has a stop sign , so it looks like a legal road but , it's not on the MVUM ? A sign in some of these places , especially that one , wouldn't hurt. I suspect that a few of these are farm roads or where old roads used to be ? I definitely think the USFS is getting better about some things though... the signs on the roads closed for turkey season are a lot better this year. I don't think there are too many people out there to damage anything on purpose. ( there have been some for sure.. and a whole lot of drinking and driving going on . ) There are a lot of beer cans and trash , a lot of mud holes and " side trails " to get around them. It's going to happen , people suck. There's Turkey Bay offroad area for rock crawling and mud...but , some folks , like myself are out there for the view and the old home places or just a quiet drive in the woods . Turkey Bay isn't that. It doesn't have the hundreds of remote campsites or interesting old churches. I understand the desire to protect , I also understand the importance of open space and access to natural areas. There aren't a whole lot of places where you can hunt , fish and camp anymore. It's public land that you , me and everybody else pay for. They've placed some big rock at Pisgah where folks used to camp ( and kept pushing further into the woods year by year ) to limit access there. so, maybe a big rock or two at Persimmon Beach would solve that as well? I'd hate to see any of the roads be shut down , but there's a few times and places where I wouldn't blame them.

@KyRubicon I asked the same thing. They've never had a problem dropping an iron gate to close a road (e.g. the old silo) but they can't here. I wasn't in a position to argue but I won't go back down 139. It's altered my otherwise favorable opinion of LBL. Two years of tolerance and all of a sudden they're writing $180 tickets?
@thesboard09
@thesboard09 Год назад
If it were me... I'd go to court before I paid a $180 ticket. The sign that's up on 139 says the road dead ends in 3 miles... the beach camp is only 2.7 and the " road " goes right out there... no gate , no sign, no barrier of any kind and it's been that way for years.. It might not do any good , but I'd ha e my day in court for $180.

Actually none of that story is true. Never happened. The whole story was made up tp promote a small time movie . Anyone who's spent any amount of time in LBL can tell you the person who wrote the " Jan Thompson " letters definitely didn't know anything about the place... and even less about Grand Rivers. I've had the oportunity to talk to several people who lived Between the Rivers and none of them ever heard of any of this before the " beast " story .. so no , there weren't stories about it before... One more thing , in the Hopkinsville paper , there was an article . In the article , Lee Vervoort , who wrote the whole thing , admitted to making it up. He said " the people who lived there were jealous because they didn't think of it first ." The whole thing is a made up story , that doesn't make sense if you've been there , to promote a movie that still hasn't happened...

This spot was a well kept secret until recently. Now, it's trashed and will probably get closed soon. But, at least you got some content for it though. Thanks for essentially geo tagging in an area with limited public land that will undoubtedly endure irrecoverable damage.

It was trashed long before I went out there... so sorry I let the secret out LOL... I guess the public might get to use their land now..
@thesboard09
@thesboard09 11 месяцев назад
PS... when I was out there filming there were several bags of trash laying around.. and beer cans about every 10 yards.... not to mention the tree at Persimmon Beach with crap hung all over it... signs , car parts , trinkets and a bunch of stickers / sharpie ( which kinda refutes the " well kept secret " thing...) However , they're writing tickets for going past or down onto the gravel bar ..Apparently it has never been a " legal " road past there... There's a sign that says " road dead ends 3 miles ahead " and the junk tree is only 2.7 miles from that sign ... On the one hand , it's BS... However , while I was out this weekend , I saw where someone had been out in a field doing donuts in the mud on 141 , and at the end of 143. They've had to build barriers at Pisgah Bay because people just kept moving further and further into the woods... so I don't fault the USFS . And one more point on your " at least you got content " comment. When I decided to film my " content " , I went to the USFS and got permission to do it.. that's why I'm able to say where I am , but there have been a lot of people who've posted video of places like persimmon beach , I wasn't even close to the first LOL. Just the first to say where I was ( because I have permission to do that ) LBL is ultimately " public land " so anyone can go anywhere they are legally allowed and they can partake in any legal activity permitted on that public land... It would be nice if people could respect it enough to clean up after themselves and not detroy the place , but that's obviously too much to ask. At this point , I wouldn't blame the USFS if they did start shutting down parts of it. At least as far as vehicle traffic goes, they're doing a lot of work fixing roads this year, but there's just as much damage being done by people doing donuts and " going mudding ". Which is either going to result in closures or getting everything paved over. Turkey Bay is there for just that sort of stuff... and there's a fee because fixing the damage is expensive . As far as the garbage , there's just no excuse for it... and even less for the idiots hanging crap in the trees. Unless your mommy works at LBL... pick up after yourself.
