Persistence of Vision - Blinking LEDs Appear Solid - 1088AS 8x8 Matrix Demo - Simply Put 

For yonks my wife and I struggled to understand why we 'couldn't see ' when trying to do things like embroidery or soldering in our lounge room.... so we brought a large lamp to put beside the couch.... still no good, we thought we might need to get our eyes checked.... Solved the mystery when I started playing with Arduino and LED's by realising that for half the time in our lounge we were sitting in the dark!! Swapped the LED bulb in the lamp for a incandescent and problem was gone. This video was great, thanks dude!

When you said "On delay" I heard "ándale" nice. thanks for this explanation tho. I was wondering why my array wasn't working I was trying to power the leds in the pattern i want all at once. Didn't think about the "scan line" method. In fact i had no idea that was the standard method. I bet you can do this with segmented displays too.
