Persona 4 Arena | Kanji Finds Out It Wasn't A Dream 

This joke was actually kind of mistranslated due to the way the honorifics were translated into the English version. In the Japanese version, the joke actually carries a very different meaning due to the way characters refer to each other in the Japanese version. In the Japanese version, the characters are much more likely to refer to each other by last name basis-san/kun/etc unless they are particularly close (Yu/Yosuke, Yu/Rise, Chie/Yukiko, and Yukari/Mitsuru are particular examples of first-name basis dynamics in the games). Naoto in particular, due to her professional personality, has an extremely professional manner of speaking, and she uses last name basis with EVERYONE in Japanese. Even her friends she's close with, she refers to her senpai as Narukami-senpai, Hanamura-senpai, Satonaka-senpai, and Amagi-senpai, she refers to Rise as Kujikawa-san, and she refers to Kanji as Tatsumi-kun. Everyone except Teddie gets last name basis from Naoto. What Kanji wanted to do in the Japanese version was for Naoto to switch from last name basis to first name basis, ie go from Tatsumi-kun to Kanji-kun. Why? Because no one else in the IT ever uses last name basis with him: Yu, Yosuke, and Teddie don't even use honorifics with him, Chie and Yukiko find him endearing and call him Kanji-kun, and Rise loves to piss him off and call him Kanji even without an honorific. Kanji wanted Naoto to refer to him in a more casual manner so that it could feel like they were friends like he did with everyone else, and not make Naoto sound so, well, distant. Unfortunately, Naoto NEVER uses first-name basis with anyone, so the *idea* of first name basis made her extremely uncomfortable, because such loose mannerism of speaking is outside of her own rhetoric. That's why she was so flustered. Kanji didn't consider this, and that's why her reaction ultimately shocked him the way it did. Sorry this was long (don't worry, only took my like 2 minutes haha), but this joke is actually quite complicated and very different in the original

To be fair, unlike the older members of the team whom used the usual Junes TV to enter after the P1 Arena stream, Kanji was in his room and fall asleep, causing him to accidentally trip over and enter through his room TV. Rise and Teddie were captured first due to their detection abilities and Naoto follows the Shadow Operatives.

In the canon route (this video here shows a "joke" ending), Mitsuru says something along the lines of: "To think that we were saved by someone who had so little understanding of the situation" with a kind smile. That was funny.

You don't really get that impression as a foreigner due to most popular shounen having characters that call one another by their first name without making it a big deal in both English and Japanese.

I just call people whatever lol There's Atleast 3 people I call "my language's equivalent to onee-san" despite me being older than them. One person I forever call as their last name despite being close with cause it sounds better lol. I also rarely call people "my languages version of onii-san" even if they're like 6 years older than me. Unless it's looks like it's appropriate to call them that. Changing how you call someone's name is hard af.

Naoto finally knows Kanji better as in the main game, they never Interacted a lot. So its maybe the same as treating him as a very close friend instead of being a couple? IDK, I dont know much japanese. But atlus seldomly pairs characters canonically as at the end of the day, its a JRPG and a Social sim

If it makes you feel any better, it’s implied this is kind of what happens in other routes as well. He’s even the final boss of Teddie’s route instead of hacked Labrys or the doppelgängers.

That’s more or less what happens in Ultimax, the game seems to mostly follow Yu, Youske, and Aiges route but Kanji still thought he was sleeping lol

@Naienis you should. They are so sweet together. Kanjis a pretty abrasive guy but he can be really soft and sweet for Naoto. Naoto doesn't seem to quite get why but she's drawn to him

The reason is because the tv world is basically making them hallucinate the whole time. The characters will speak to the real person but are tricked into hearing them either digging at their personal issues or agitating them in some way to encourage them to fight. They are actually fighting but the words that lead them to do it are just the world messing with their heads. Kanji also assumes this is all a dream because he was half asleep when he fell into the tv, so he already thinks none of it is real and the world is messing with him further. This is also shown in his fight with Naoto, he points out that at this time she's not even in Inaba, so he can't possibly assume it's actually her.

I've seen some people bringing this as a validation for Kanji x Naoto being a canon, but Naoto's necklace has nothing to do with Kanji's, even the size and color are different. Ouch. Also, I always thought that Kanji's crush on Naoto was made for a comic relief purpose, so I never saw it being something serious. I still like my boi Kanji tho, it's just the Pimp King who gets all the girls so nothing personal lol

Yeah I didn’t pick her cause I’d feel kinda bad for doing my boy Kanji dirty like that.... it’s fun doing that to Morgana when you pick Ann in 5, but I’d feel bad picking Naoto even though she’s pretty top tier.

Biecie Jack honestly shes not a bad pick. I picked Rise in my golden run on PC cause she reminded me of FF7R’s Jessie, and pretty much won me by replacing Teddie as the battle announcer cause he made me wanna mute my TV anytime I go to TV world, I felt really bad when I rejected yukiko, she didn’t take it very well. Especially cause I did say yes at first to see what her romance was like and then rerolled the save file.
