Discussing the horror literature of Thomas Ligotti - Songs of Dead Dreamer and Grimscribe & The Conspiracy Against the Human Race. I don’t read a lot of horror fiction (only H. P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe), but the way Ligotti impersonates the human experience with supernatural horror, giving you a taste of philosophical pessimism and existential dread, I’m very curious to explore this genre.
Books mentioned:
Songs of a Dead Dreamer and Grimscribe by Thomas Ligotti
The Conspiracy Against the Human Race by Thomas Ligotti
Writers/Philosophers mentioned:
H. P. Lovecraft
Edgar Allan Poe
Arthur Schopenhauer
Petter Wessel Zapffe
Emil Cioran
David Benatar
Giacomo Leopardi
Film mentioned:
Lijo Jose Pellissery’s “Ee.Ma.Yau.” (2018)

Glad to see some one reviewing ligotti;s works... even though he plays a lot with horrors and tries to tingle you with the creepiness of the words he choses to write ; He can be mockingly funny too at times (some funny things like the cinematic references like MOTEL HELL he gives in his non fiction book and the last three pages of chapter impersonation and sometimes the "ask any puppet/atheist/doctor". ((it's just my personal opinion))

Nice review! It appears from your reading that Ligotti is giving an explanation for the absurdity of existence (pointed out by others, such as Camus). His philosophy seems to explain the absurdity of being as nothing else but being conscious. Probably drunkards and drug addicts escape from this absurdity just by being temporarily unconscious! 😅

Great review, and thanks also for that film recommendation. Looking forward to sitting down with it. On the malignant uselessness of consciousness stuff: there's a cult-classic sci-fi book by Peter Watts called "Blindsight" that inserts essentially the same idea into its setting, and being a fictional work, really gives one time to soak up the weight of the idea. Philosophical horror has ideas that burrow in and never leave~

Yes, totally agree - philosophical horror, once absorbed, somehow makes it nest in the brain and refuses to budge. Thanks for the recommendation! 🖤

Awesome review! You've gotten yourself a new subscriber.I have read conspiracy against the human race before , which I found interesting but after watching your video , I really need to pick up some of his other books, too.I scanned through your youtube channel and saw that many of the books you reviewed in the past , are books I own or still want to read.Looking forward watching more great reviews in the future.Wishing you all the best.

I attempted to read Ligotti, but I find his stories too depressing for me. I enjoy H.P. Lovecraft stories, where the dangers are outside ourselves, but with Ligotti, the evil is shown to be inside of us and never-ending. I only read about half of the book you are talking about, but I had to quit because the stories were taking me to the depths of depression.

I was not sure whether I want to pick up _Songs of a Dead Dreamer and Grimscribe_ but your review convinced me. I'll get myself an audiobook (my preferred format).

Jon Padgett does some cool readings/audio work on Ligotti's stuff if you're not aware.

Of course, I love Ligotti and think that you always find a very interesting topic. Recommend Topor, novel The Tenant. There's a spooky movie Polanski made on this by the same name.

Oh I didn't know Polanski made a movie on it, how wonderful!!! And thank you so much. 😁

Assuming you enjoyed reading Poe and Lovecraft then I would recommend E.T.A. Hoffmann, Sheridan Le Fanu and Arthur Machen for more classic horror that has some literary depth to it.

Have you read Philipp Mainländer's Philosophy of Redemption? Mainländer is the most nihilistic of the philosophers already dead and still alive. Ligotti is great but Mainländer is the darkest and most hopeless of them all. If HP Lovecraft had been a philosopher he would be Philipp Mainländer and vice versa. Regards ✌🏻

I have read about him but never actually read his work, The Philosophy of Redemption. I shall get to it soon then, thanks!
