Im not saying this because im a Mets fan but the Mets announcers are the best in any sport. There is no bias in them. They side with the Mets but will also call it the other way if it appears that way Philly and Boston announcers are the worst especially when they are playing ny teams. They can look at a replay and still not give the proper credit to NY teams

As a Mets fan, I think where part of the confusion is a lack of clarity in the rules. So some places say the catcher cannot have a foot on the plate, but nothing explicitly stating that in the rules listed on the MLB website. There is also the interpretation that the catcher was set up in the "fair" lane and not the "foul" lane, but even though the front of the plate was given on the "foul" lane the whole lane through the base was not given, which could be a violation of the rules as the runner would also expect to occupy the back part of the lane as well. In this instance, the rules are not laid out explicitly enough to give a clear cut determination which allows us to have this debate today. With my interpretation, both lanes were occupied prior to possession of the ball even though the front half of the plate was occupied. So in the most basic interpretation this could be considered an improper play. But the runner was not fully obstructed, which would make the play legitimate. MLB needs to do a better job at drawing out these rules just a little more like other sports do.

To all the people on here talking about some made-up "catcher cant have his foot on the plate until he has the ball" rule. "The catcher is not permitted to block the runner's path to the plate unless he is in possession of the ball, though blocking the path of the runner in a legitimate attempt to receive a throw is not considered a violation." That's the actual rule. Nothing about his foot being on the plate. He just can't block the path to the plate, which he wasn't. He was standing on the backside of the plate until catching the ball and making the tag pulled him into the pathway.

@cooperbeer282
@cooperbeer282 Месяц назад
100%. The nuance of the rule is *so important.* You can block the plate if you're doing so in a legitimate attempt to field the ball, you don't have to wait until you're actually holding the ball to block the plate.
@rickperez5772
@rickperez5772 Месяц назад
Sorry, but this is incorrect. What you are referring to is an official guidance sent out this year to managers (see Martino's leaked memo). The rule, as you have presented it, is correctly stated and interpreted. However, to say he wasn't blocking the path to the plate couldn't be further from the truth. The MLB Replay Center's statement makes no appeal to whether or not the path was blocked, but rather to whether the exception to the violation applied, which could only be held if MLB concedes the path was blocked in the first place. Therefore, it comes down to whether or not the exception was applied correctly. The reasoning provided in the statement claimed the setup was legal, and that Amaya, as you put it, "was standing on the backside of the plate until catching the ball and making the tag pulled him into the pathway." However, the standards for enforcement raised by MLB's memo states that standing on the plate, which we all agreed occurred, is in fact an illegal setup. Therefore, the decision MLB issued was made erroneously.

@@rickperez5772 The actual reference made here is to MLB's rulebook, specifically Rule 6.01(i)(2). Nothing in the rulebook addresses standing on the back of home plate; so far as we can tell, it's a grey area which will probably be dealt with by the rules committees in the near future.

Where do you see standing on the plate as being a violation? All the rule says is the catcher cannot block the runners path as he’s attempting to score. He had an unimpeded path to the entire front half of the plate. Nothing in the official rules or comments mentions standing on the plate. Since Pete would have scored easily if he got his hand on the ground, how could it possibly be considered impeding him, especially when the “impediment” would’ve been after he theoretically scored? Great job reading your entire fantasy definition of the rule into the official rule book though.

55 years of being a NYM fan and I’d call him out to. If Pete slid feet first then we would have a tie game. Maybe it’s to difficult to tell Major Leaguers anything but Pete made a terrible slide. Let Ricky Henderson and the Pete Rose types to go in head first. That slide practically made Big Pete come to a complete stop. LGFM
