Pete and His Bus, Episode 29: Collection 

I’ve literally binge watched the whole series of vids over 3 nights, as once you start, you can’t stop watching it’s so addictive. Also it’s so refreshing to see a different and humorous outlook on restoration and that it doesn’t need to be so intense and regimental all of the time. Great to watch someone do it the way they want to and not be dictated by others. Keep up the good work, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the whole series and will keep waiting for the next instalment.

The attention to detail and quality of work is nothing short of amazing.

I watch your videos and I follow the evolution of the buses from Torremolinos, in Malaga. How wonderful to be able to buy a jewel like the RML, keep it and give it a new life. And what envy. Congratulations for your work and your videos.

Thanks for another great video, look forward to the next. 42.5 mph is the usual top speed for a bus of this type. Used to be part owner of a 1968 Leyland PD3A/12 and that would cruise at 42-43 mph on the flat, but show it a hill !!!. At the weekend I was on another PD3, a 1958 model, and that was capable of 43mph on the M40, even overtaking an older PD2 on a hill.

Cool buses. I was born in 64. And Dudley had these buses. I would be about five to 8 years old and the conductor was a Indian guy that had two thumbs and he used to push the ticket machine with his second thumb. Lol. He thought it was funny. But I was too young to know not to say look mom he got two thumbs. All I got was shut up. Lol. But I've travelled the world and seen them all over. Thanks for the video. Good luck.

I used to drive 2634 before you owned it, from the old firm that used to operate it. It was the first rml that i drove for a private hire back when i started 6 year ago. I was 19 years old back then. Actually i think I’ve seen you driving up the 404 once or twice (the other bus) since im still working up that way. If my memory serves me correct, i think ive seen this parked up in the engineers yard (i wont say too much) and had a quick nosey around it. What struck me most was the extra headroom 😁

Grill looks awesome. Needed to be black and now with he silver surround looks amazing well done Pete. With merch would love a baseball cap and Tea Mug pls.

Bus is looking great, super glossy. Love RML 2634, sounds & looks superb. Have a humble maxi 110 chiller, bit smaller than yours.

Your grille looks superb after a full repaint. Routemasters are the best bus ever built and I enjoyed my three years driving them.

Great video Pete, the grill looks superb. Collecting your friends RM 2634 was very interesting. I used to travel on these buses 😀in the late sixties and early seventies before passing my driving test.

Great vid as always. I'm decorating my boy's room this week and always use Frog Tape, great gear leaves nice crisp lines and doesn't normally wreck the surface.

No hubodometer on that one. Time to right the wrong, though LT never used them, only appearing after privatisation! I like the gold London Transport signage. I used to only like the white roundel but have come to appreciate the gold lettering after watching The Nine Road. Agree the black grill mesh looks better than matching red.

I probably drove RML2634 when I worked out of Putney Garage on 14 and 22 route.

I have had similar issues with standard masking tape. Frog tape- good stuff. Any of the blue coloured tapes are good too, but you must remove them within 2 days, and keep them out of direct sunlight. Great video Pete, look forward to the next!

In fairness it's always good to have spares in stock if they regularly fail or are long lead time items. I'll not charge you for the supply chain advice this time but next time ;-)

Great video as always Pete .. the re-paint of the front grille was worth the effort .. looks great .. re-load tea mug as well! As a real-ale man myself .. I thought frothy fizzy beer was fine .. but if it’s not cold enough .. you will actually taste the beer.. yuck! (That’s why they serve it so cold ! Lol 😉) now pass me that pint of Routemaster Red ..Cheers! 🍻. Loved the journey with RML2634 from near my home town of High Wycombe (was that Binders Yard where she had been stored for so long?) via M40 & Beaconsfield Services. Glad she made it safely down to Kent .. and yes British Bus Engineering at its finest .. you regularly see beautiful examples of 50 year old Routemasters on the road and her predecessor the RT now nearing 70 years old & still going strong along with her sister single deck AEC Regal IV RF class .. only a couple of Sundays back I was even more lucky to witness an even older AEC out in service .. namely a 1921 (yes 101 year old bus!!) single deck S type S243 reg XL8940) taking part in the Running Day at Elstree & Borehamwood!! you're the masked painter ..!!!

the one commercial criticism of the Routemaster as a LT design was that it was too complex, and inital cost expensive compared with other full chassis machines in the market, yet it has been shown over time that the subframes for the running units and the air/hydralics for the brakes / gearbox overall is quite resilliant giving a vehicle that is no more difficult than a large car to run through servicing. Only really Northern General taking the forward entrance body variety was the non LT customer ( given BEA were nudged by LT to buy them ). Regent Vs however sold in decent numbers , given the change to front entrance driver operated larger vehicles, and they must have been more tricky to maintain ( the bonnet alone being a two person handful ), they really must have been sold a quite a discount to make them attractive to the buyers.

Frogtape is definitely the way to go discovered it like yourself some years ago.

Buy another thermostat and keep it in stock for the next time, you bet a pound to a pinch of the proverbial, the other one will go soon……grill looks stunning, sticker arrived , just got to work out where to put it….👍🇮🇲

Another cracking video Pete , is it worth getting some aerosol paint cans filled, so small issues such as the grill faults could be sorted with less hassle you would also have them for touch ups ?

I didnt really see many of the early routemasters with the small roundel grill version, nor were aware of any/many that had no triangle (were they strictly the ones with Leyland Engines ?) and it was odd gaining the standard AEC Triangle ( though with the London Transport name instead ) given the RTs had it and the commercially sold AEC Bridgemaster and Regent V were so fitted.

Tip. If you have to mask a newly painted bit rub the masking take over you jeans to remove so of the tacky
