@jbond5150 Do you know for a fact that he took a dive and wanted to lose. Every one knows how competitive he was and he's not considered for hof for coaching, but his hitting. So show me how he got so many hits wanting to get out and help the other team win. How did he score so many runs taking it easy ?why is he known as Charlie hustle for not giving his all on the field? It's hard to believe he hit that catcher so hard in the all-star game jogging not wanting to score bc he was getting paid to lose. Let's assume you was a man and was competitive like that. You would most likely want to win and you'd be willing to take risk that make you want to be better instead of just marrying your husband and going to work. No disrespect bc both are something you have to work at but both are a gamble. Like I'm sure you try to be the best wife you can be. So you will be proud off dress you bought and husband will always be proud of ring he bought you. That way neither one of y'all lose the gamble. I know it's hard for a woman to understand how much pride and desire to win means to a man. So you can't relate, but ask your husband if he was a fast runner would he make or accept a bet that he could win the race. Then ask him if to put self in coaches place and pretend he's a dad. If another kid in school was faster then his son and his dad knew he'd lose would he bet he'd win and lose money and race ? That's a tough question and I don't think there's anything you can show me where Pete Rose tried to lose. He's been a man about for 30 years, and accepted responsibility. I understand your frustration bc a lot of hypocrites talk about Pete Rose doing something in baseball that they do in other areas. It's like a drunk talking about a drug addict when he's addicted to something that's killed more than most drugs combined. Hypocrisy doesn't stop there. The glutton talks about the drunk and addict like he's better, but he's unhealthy out of shape bc of his addiction to food. That's the leading cause of deaths annually in the United States. Heart disease tops all cancers combined. The only thing that tops it in this country annually is abortion. Which is filled with hypocrites too that think men shouldn't have guns, but why not ? Abortion has killed more babies in this country since legalized than our soldiers have died in war since colonized. I know it's sad and hypocritical, but it's true you look at stats just like you can stats in baseball

@jbond5150 You know it's no disrespect to you or the investigation show, but I admire how much passion he put into it. I know there's different reasons but you don't see players with passion like that. Not only baseball I've always been a multi sport lover like boxing and I love the passion Muhammad Ali brought to boxing and the world. As far as investigations I think they're just as accurate at showing flaws in our justice system. I don't know how many people have been convicted and years later the truth come out either through DNA or other evidence. I also don't know how many athletes have have lost their careers bc of a lie. Like 2 years ago I saw where girl had admitted that she lied about a guy taping her. They let him out, but it was sad seeing the universities that wanted him to play football for them. He was one of the most sought after athletes in the country and the next thing you know he's in prison. I think it was 6 years before the girl admitted what happened. He was released, but to what ? Instead of a career he got a sentence that led to poverty instead of a future. He's just 1 example, and I know for a fact that a confession doesn't always mean the accused is wrong. A lot of times they will go alomg with a plea that promised them something behind closed doors. Then the promise is broken when a confession is made and they can get a conviction

Pete will soon be 80 ! Baseball is losing touch with its fan base. If the baseball gods want to reconnect with them put Pete in the hall of fame before he passes away. He deserves it and its older fans would love it!

There was a great video on youtube, now down, of Pete giving baseball lessons to kids. It was great. One of the things he said was don't be afraid of getting hit by the ball----"look at it this way, if you get hit, you get on base."

The truth is that baseball wanted nothing to do with Pete long before the gambling came to light.

I agree with you but he didn't have the most homeruns of any switch hitter. I'm pretty sure Eddie Murray , Mickey Mantle, Chipper Jones and a few more have quite a few more homeruns. Pete wasn't known for hitting homeruns. He had more doubles than anyone in NL history, more hits than anyone in MLB history, but he never hit more than 16 homers in a season. But when you are on teams with Frank Robinson, Johnny Bench, George Foster , Tony Perez , Mike Schmidt etc you don't have to. He got on base and scored. He scored more runs than all but 4 or 5 players in history

I don't think you're accurately recalling the game you saw Pete Rose play in. His last season as a player was 1986 which was his 3rd (and last season) as a player/manager. The Reds never won a pennant with him as a manager. The Giants never won a pennant when Pete was a player/manager. The Giants won the pennant in 1987 and 1989 but Pete Rose wouldn't have been playing in games during those seasons. In his player/manager days, he only stole 13 bases, one of which was at Candlestick, but Pete didn't go 3/5 that day and although he was walked in that game it wasn't intentional. He only inserted himself as a pinch hitter late in that 14 inning game which the Giants won 2-1. Pete will be the first to tell you that all that matters is winning the game, so if the Reds didn't win, then I don't think Pete would say he outmanaged anyone that day. I'm not sure how old you are but you said you went alone to this game at Candlestick, so I'm assuming you were older than 8 years old. If so, then Pete wasn't the only player/manager in your lifetime because Don Kessinger of the Chicago Whitesox was a player/manager in 1979 only 5 years prior to Rose being a player/manager.

Pete gets nowhere near the appreciation he deserves because of the gambling scandal ... but he never bet against his own team. He did lie that he never gambled. And now that gambling is legit, what does that say about the condemnation he got ? No, it wasn't deserved... I loved his comments about "we're rebuilding", that wasn't part of his career at all. This is a guy who would sprint down to first after a walk. If he hit a single, he would challenge the outfielder with his turn. Pete was the lead off man of the best team I have ever followed. And he is right, it takes a whole team to do what they did. As far as I'm concerned Pete Rose is the greatest baseball player of all time...

He disgraced the game, and he deserves the punishment he brought on himself. How do you know he never bet against his own team? They never followed up on the allegations that said he did bet against the Reds. Besides if he didn't bet on the Reds on every game, that's like tipping off the bookies that he has no confidence that night and that he may very well hold players out to save them for the next game when he will bet. He tainted the game and broke the cardinal rule that was in every clubhouse in the MLB. He knew what the punishment was for breaking the rule. That's great that you think he's the best player of all time, but he singlehandedly set baseball back 70 years the day the story broke about his gambling and he made it worse by lying and blaming MLB for the supposed witch hunt. He put his current team at the time as well as the players and manager of the Big Red Machine through such pain by having to answer questions about him for all those years while he was lying. The Big Red Machine was amazing but there are other teams that did the same if not more than they did before and afterwards.

Oh I think the punishment for Rose was justified. I also think that Bonds, Clemens, Sosa, Maguire, Canseco and the rest of the steroid cheaters are scumbags. They never get into the HOF. .Never...Cause they were imposters. We knew who Pete Rose was. .He's the player/manager asshole who gambled on baseball. He's my favorite and easily the greatest baseball player ever. The 4000+ hits proves it. Rickey Henderson is the second best...Shoeless Joe Jackson was greatness cut short. Cheater. .Pete R.wrung every last bit of ability out of himself. The only bright spot to the tragedy of being his own worst enemy was it came at the end of his career...Yeah he was cocky, arrogant..no self-effacing superstar. But godamnit, in his case it was justified.

Pete's the one that started the downward slide of baseball and then the strike forced the game to really go to the dark side. That's all I have to say about that.

I also think that the Owners wanted to win more back then. A ball team wasn't an investment or owning one so much of a status symbol back then. The wealthy people who owned the teams often really loved the game. And there was an element of we're doing this for our city and community. Something to bring people together. Branch Rickey wanted to win and his Brooklyn Dodgers to have the best players and to do that he was willing to cross an awful lot of people by bringing in Jackie Robinson. The Busch family in Saint Louis seemed to really love the team when I was growing up. George Steinbrenner, say about him what you will & I've probably said worse lol, He really wanted to win. The Marlins won the World Series and immediately sold away all their stars. That was a WTF? moment for me. Can't blame players for not being as committed as they once were when their bosses, the owners just won't put any sweat into the game. I'm biased but I think the Cardinals have been more loyal to their great players thus able to keep them around more than other teams and in turn the fans are loyal and players often say some of the best baseball fans. Gave the Red Sox a standing ovation when they beat us in the World Series because it was hard fought and an historic moment in baseball everyone could appreciate. Ticket sales for such a small city & metro area are really good. Because the team is run right. Not for money but to win. I hope I'm not jinxing us but players care more when owners and the fans really care about and support them. People have taken less money than they coulda got elsewhere to stay and play in St. Louis. Nobody turns up for Marlin's games? Surprised pikachu face!

That's a load of $hit isn't it!? I live about 65 miles south of Lexington, Kentucky and when I first moved up here I had Directv installed and bought the NFL Package so I could watch Cincinnati Bengals games. If the game wasn't soldout the Thursday before the game was to be played it was blacked out!! Even though I live 140, 150 miles south of Cincinnati and I paid EXTRA for NFL Sunday Ticket!! I called Directv and told them to come get their f'n dish off my property because if I have to return it it's coming through the front window of their Headquarters!! haha

And if Rose ever gets in, there are a number of Hall of Famers that won't show up. Luckily for Rose he's outliving most of them so that list is getting smaller every year. Either way, I don't think Cooperstown is going to make a change to get you to show up.

Yeah...there's nothing better than watching defenseless wide receivers going up for a ball and getting their head taken off and having the defender say, "Not in my house" or a defenseless catcher trying to catch a throw from the outfield get nailed by a runner with their shoulder down while they're still looking for the throw.
