Kate is incredible. Brillant, talented, beautiful. She is a national treasure in Britain, and for good reason. I've been a fan of hers for decades.

I felt the vocal in Wuthering heights was supposed to sound unsettling, like a screech from a ghost.

Artistic choice is wasted if you are playing to someone who doesn't appreciate art. Thankfully Brit's got it and Kate went on to great things.

Wilburn, I've always enjoyed your reactions, very knowledgeable, but you shouldn't judge Kate Bush on two outings. She has influenced many other great artists, and is considered a Genius by people who know what they are talking about.Her voice is like an angel, and Peter Gabriel was considered good enough at this time to be known as the Male version of Kate Bush, that's how highly she was considered.
@Rasperdan

Kate Bush is so much more than a voice. Her talent has nothing to do with singing. She wrote the song "The man witht the child in his eyes" at the age of fifteen. You should have a listen and keep in mind how young she was when she wrote it.

Kate Bush is my hero by far. A total original who has written and performed the most interesting music for decades. Never followed any trends. She also has used her voice in many different ways. From the experimental groundbreaking The Dreaming album to the extremely moving This Woman's Work. ❣️

This makes me cry every time I watch it...it is so damn beautiful.... It's such a heart breaking story, and performed to perfection by Kate and Peter.... Both legends with great voices. PS Wuthering Heights by Kate wasn't meant to be soothing...it was a tragedy, she was a lost ghost trying to get back to her Heathcliffe. her high octave was like a scream, trying to heard from the other side. That's how I interpreted the video...totally brilliant....

Great Peter Gabriel song, but it is Kate Bush that makes it pure magic. Kate has one of the most incredible voices in music and is considered one of the greatest singers of all time. She has a 4 octave voice and always sings it in the voice of the character she is performing (in the other song you reviewed, "Wuthering Heights", Kate sang in her upper register as she was portraying a ghost coming back to haunt her lover - and by the way, there are lots of key changes in that song!). Kate is an icon, widely considered a one-of-a-kind musical genius (and producer). Along with her friend Peter Gabriel, she was/is a pioneer in innovation and is highly influential and respected in the music industry. In her first 3 albums, Kate was experimenting a lot with the upper ranges of her voice and doing a lot of vocal gymnastics. I suggest you listen to something from her mid to late career, like "Running Up That Hill." By the way, Kate is still very relevant. Her 2014 concerts (22 shows) sold out over 100,000 tickets in less than 15 minutes ( a record for the famous Hammersmith Apollo), and that same year she had 8 of her albums in the Top 40 (and all 10 albums in the Top 50) at the same time, the first female to ever do so, and third artist behind only Elvis and the Beatles).

The bass player on this song is none other than Tony Levin. The man is a musical genius. He's been playing bass and the Chapman Stick for PG since he started his solo career. PG said he won't go on tour until Tony's schedule allows him to tour. Levin has played for so many recordings over the years including Buddy Rich! He currently is playing with King Crimson and his own band Stick Men. Since you are a drummer, I highly recommend you check both of those bands out. Pat Mastelotto is one the greatest, but least known, drummers playing today.

Kate wasn't trying to sound soothing in Wuthering Heights. She was actually trying to sound like the ghost of a woman haunting her former lover. That can sound a little ... haunting.

@eduardoalegriarampante639 3 года назад
About Kate and her range. She uses her voice for effect in every song preety much. Like an actress would. In Wuthering Heights she plays the ghost of a dead woman haunting her cruel ex lover. It's unsettling, yes. She also wasnt even 20 when she wrote the song, and she had access to this ultra weird high pitched voice which she never used again as the 80s rolled in. Here with Peter she plays a companion/wife/sister/mother character. She plays it very very understated leaving Peter complete protagonism of the song. She's brilliant. A genius. Peter's equal. They are actually compared a lot.

I would suggest you chack out Kate's famous 80s single Running Up That Hill. And also check out This Woman's Work, which was popularised by the R+B singer Maxwell in the 2000s.

Guys, we can't be offended because his opinion differs from ours. I'd always prefer to listen to someone give their honest opinion rather than just pander to the fans. He's told us what he wants from a singer and although it is almost exactly the opposite of what I look for he still has the right to express his opinion. Personally I would contend that someone like Billie Holiday or Marianne Faithfull or Bettye Lavette, to name just a few, who had a fairly limited range but poured more meaning and emotion into a song than most singers with riffs and runs for days, is a better singer for that reason but that is also only my opinion. Let's also remember a couple of things: He is giving an instant reaction to someone with a unique style with whom he's not familiar. How many of us got Kate Bush first time and straight away? Also he's young and generations away from those who first heard her in the context of the time in which she appeared. His ears and expectations are attuned to modern times. He's said he wants to expand his musical experience. It's an admirable goal. Let's give him the time and help to do that.

This song means the world to me, and I still get a little weepy when I hear it. The moment I learned that I was HIV+, back in 2009, this song immediately came into my head, I was such a fan of his album “Us”. So this is always associated with that diagnosis. And this song was written with Kate in mind.

I think you missed the fact that Wuthering heights was supposed to be unsettling. She was a ghost at the window........ Kates vocals vary across her songs and differ depending on the subject and the feel of the song. They are often a bit quirky which puts some people off, particularly those who are used to a straight line R&B and soul sound, but that’s what makes her unique and loved by her fans. She is perfectly capable of singing what those folk might consider to be ‘normally’ but does not always do so as an artistic decision. Thank god she did not just stand at the mic and sing other people’s songs which is what most female singers did up until the mid 70s. Her desire to sing and dance literally accelerated the development of the small radio mic and without Kate there would be no Madonna and no GAGA.

I'd definitely suggest either Running Up That Hill or Cloudbusting if you want to hear hear a couple of Kate's popular songs that are in her lower range. However, as someone else said, The Dreaming is probably her lowest tones and also her strangest song. It is the title track from the album of the same name. That whole album is pretty experimental and harder to listen to if you aren't already into her music. Her song, This Woman's Work, which was later covered by Maxwell, is also beautiful. There are quite a few reasons that she has been an influence on performers from Adele, to Solange Knowles, to Big Boi from OutKast. She even recorded a song that Prince did backing vocals on. (I'm not recommending that one to you, even quite a few of her fans don't love it - I happen to, though.) From the time she was "discovered' by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd fame until just a couple of years ago, when she did her first concert performances since about 1980, she has been producing a lot of truly amazing work. It is pretty varied, though, and certainly parts of it aren't going to appeal to everyone.

It was her song Women's Work, which was used in the movie She's Having A Baby. The song was so powerful with the scenes it was showing.

Vocals don't have to, or need to, be soothing or settling - it depends on the song and what the artist is conveying - and Kate Bush is a great, unique artist. 'The Hounds of Love' album, for example is pure genius - the first side is filled with great songs and side 2 (The Ninth Wave) is epic, a complete unit, packed with emotion.
