In my opinion this is the best version of this song, Paula absolutely kills it with the vocals. As a matter a fact in my opinion she was amazing in every song and every show with Peter on this tour. She was only 25 and killed it!
As the story goes (correct me if I am wrong), the Secret World LIve concert had been in development for a while, and was perhaps the most elaborate and complex stage presentation any artist had attempted up to that time. Less than two weeks before the first concert, Peter Gabriel lost his female lead. Paula Cole was a relatively unknown singer in California. She had struggled with her record company to get her first album out, and the label did nothing to promote it. Consequently, relatively few people were familiar with her amazing voice and talent. One of those few people was Peter Gabriel, who had heard some of her tracks. He called her up out of the blue and asked her to go on a tour with him. She was a fan of Gabriel's music and was familiar with the songs, mainly from the 'US' album. She said yes, flew to Europe and had just a few days to rehearse the songs and learn the choreography before the first performance. The film of the concert was shot very early in the tour...in the first couple of shows. This makes Paula Cole's performance even more amazing, and Peter Gabriel even more of a Genius! Out of all the women in the world he could have called, he called one that few had heard of, but was perfect for his vision of the Secret World Live concert. The whole concert is a gift that keeps on giving, even after nearly 3 decades. It never gets old! All of the performers are exceptionally good in their own right!
Paula is outwordly ... Absolutely beautiful... Her face, voice, body expression... A force of nature.. She added SO much to Peter's music that's hard to hear the original recordings again. We miss her voice... In fact, since the first time we hear it, it STICKY with us... I was 7 years old when a first heard Modena's concert, when it NEVER left my soul...
This was the first time I heard of Paula Cole. Her voice blew me away and touched my heart. I am a huge fan of hers to this day. I would say she is one of my favorites.
Paula Cole is actually the singer of I Don't Wanna Wait - the Dawson's Creek theme song..don't know if you're familiar with the show ..the mid 90s coming of age/teen drama show .. im only 26 but I grew up watching D.C. with my sisters and when I first saw Peter Gabriel's Secret World live performance of In Your Eyes, I instantly recognized her as Paula Cole
Paula Cole killed it throughout this show, right from the opener, 'Come Talk to me'. This, and 'Blood of Eden' are pure class. The chemistry with Gabriel could have been created in a test tube. One of the most under-rated artists ever.
This song has always been my song to my son. He has always been a worrier and has gone through a bitter divorce. I told him to listen to this. I wanted him to know not to give up. When times get rough he can always turn to his Dad and I for comfort & help. Thank you Peter for writing and singing this and thank you to the beautiful songbird with a voice of an angel...Paula.
Paula is utterly compelling -- soulful, warm, vulnerable, authentic, radiant and beautiful. I was fortunate to see PG live with this ensemble over a quarter of a century ago on the Secret World tour, and this version of this song -- my favourite of all his great works -- moved me deeply then and just gets deeper in meaning and even more moving as I get older. Now, more than ever, we all need hope to retain the heart and resilience of our humanity, and this wonderful performance gives hope and brings solace.

It’s a great song, was always a great song. But the addition of Paula Cole perfects it. Powerful while still full of emotion and empathy. Chills. Goosebumps.

Paula really nailed this. And that's an achievement because I was genuinly captivated by Kate Bush's voice when I first heard the original in 86. And I didn't know it was Kate Bush yet.
I took my Girlfriend to that Concert. I keep this Night as one of the most precious Nights. It was the first time she was speechless for 2 Hours. Rest in Peace my Love❣️😔
Not sure I've missed any versions of this heart wrenching song, but from all female partners, Paula wins HANDS DOWN. The others don't have soft, mellow tone and ability to present the feelings of the magnificent song that my deceased wife and I had cried over this many times as we knew our time was coming to an end. I'm crying now even though her death was 14 years ago.
Every song on this album is outstanding! Maybe the best live album ever recorded? Pula was sheer perfection. Peter Gabriel knocks it out of the park. And that band!
Pure excellence!!! LOVE the bit at 5:03 where Peter quietly enters the frame to sing the last line with Paula, then raises her hand for the crowd to show their love. Saw this tour in NY and was saying to my friends “where did Peter find this girl??” Don’t know where she disappeared to, but it was great to see her have the fame that she deserved. This was an outstanding tour...but that’s the case anytime Mr. Gabriel takes the stage.
This song (coming as it did from a very supportive anti-apartheid artist) was a huge inspiration to me in South Africa during our darkest years before democracy
It makes me weep - has saved me on a few occasions when on the edge - my bother was killed in a car accident at 16yo - i was the driver at 20yo - my fault - was in a comer for 2 weeks - when out of comer was informed of his death and burial/funeral - been a battle ever since - now 64yo
I see many people here comparing Paula to Kate Bush (better/worse/prettier etc.) - can we all just agree that she's very much Paula Cole, here, and that she's KILLING IT? Loved Kate's version, but this is amazing on its own
Couldn't agree more. The problem is that only Kate Bush sings like Kate Bush. I agree it unfair to compare anyone to her. Each version is unique and beautiful in it's own way.

Never fails to inspire me. I listen to this on repeat when I am going through hard times and I send it to others. Thank you Peter Gabriel and Paula Cole.
I absolutely love Paula's voice on this song. It's perfect. She was great in this concert, I wish I could have been there. I hope she is doing well. ❤❤❤
I saw this concert in Berlin and I was so impressed by the harmony of Peter and Paula. it was real magic, I am very happy I to have been there. You can watch the videos and really enjoy this beautiful music but you will never feel the same magic of a life concert.
In this proud land we grew up strong We were wanted all along I was taught to fight, taught to win I never thought I could fail No fight left or so it seems I am a man whose dreams have all deserted I've changed my name, I've changed my face But no one wants you when you lose Don't give up 'Cause you have friends Don't give up You're not beaten yet Don't give up I know you can make it good Though I saw it all around Never thought I could be affected Thought that we'd be the last to go It is so strange the way things turn Drove the night toward my home The place that I was born, on the lakeside As daylight broke, I saw the earth The trees had burned down to the ground Don't give up You still have us Don't give up We don't need much of anything Don't give up 'Cause somewhere there's a place Where we belong Rest your head You worry too much It's going to be alright When times get rough You can fall back on us Don't give up Please don't give up 'Got to walk out of here I can't take anymore Going to stand on that bridge Keep my eyes down below Whatever may come And whatever may go That river's flowing That river's flowing Moved on to another town Tried hard to settle down For every job, so many men So many men no-one needs Don't give up 'Cause you have friends Don't give up You're not the only one Don't give up No reason to be ashamed Don't give up You still have us Don't give up now We're proud of who you are Don't give up You know it's never been easy Don't give up 'Cause I believe there's a place There's a place where we belong

The music of Peter Gabriel moves me spiritually! And Paula's performance here brings a tear to my eye. She is SO elegant in nature, and her voice is SO silky, smoky smooth!
Omg, they made me cry again, i ve heard it so many times but i still get so emotional, paula cole, great, no need to compare with other versions. Peter, crazy genius
That was unreal. I love the duet with Peter and Kate Bush. It's my favorite because special memories are attached to it. In terms of singing ability though man, Paula Cole was unreal in this song.

This version has left me totally speechless!! I must have listened to it over 50 times and just can't stop coming back to it. One of the best live performances ever!!

after coming across the video of PG secret world tour, I read an interview with Paula Cole.. young artist, graduated Berklee college, called up to do the tour, flies to Germany, has a rehearsal or two then the tour opens... this recorded on like 4th night of tour.
@@BlaqueCzar Because, like we say in Spain (literal translation) "she's a musician like a piano" too :) I never get tired of the entire "Hounds of love" album.
This is my favorite song. What a great performance. It's true - the main trait that "happy", successful people have in common is that they rarely give up. Hang on and keep going! That's what I'm going to do. I'm going to ride the whole damned ride and give life a chance. It's not always easy, but I like to fight. :) Cheers y'all.
Exceptional art, Peter Gabriel, with Paula Cole, people won't give up. You are helping us to spread hope in this fear-filled world. Thank you for this unique piece of music!
I’m dealing with digestive issues. There are so many days where it just sucks, and I feel like it’s hopeless. The pain can be annoying and awful. But this song is here to help me through. To not give up. To keep going.
This song I probably heard a million times and cried every time. I will always cherish the original because I love Kate Bush. If there is anyone who is close to her with this song it's Paula.
@@bryanglassglass8971 Kates voice is more vulnerable which, for me, suits the song better. I like Paula more on songs like "Come Talk To Me" where she can display the power in here voice. But, hey, it's a matter of one's taste.
This was Paula's breakout. Peter Gabriel knows talent when he sees it. I was 19 when I heard her sing this song on cassette and I was wondering who she was, I was blown away.
I know I am late to this conversation 😅 I only discovered these videos recently. I love PG - so distinctive and soulful. The first time I saw Paula here I was transfixed. Amazing voice but incredible presence too. I keep coming back!
I love this song, but am drawn to this version with Paula Cole. So much so that I own the Blue Ray of this concert. But it’s this video on RU-vid that I watch after a long day at work. It’s so real, she makes the world seem right no matter what the day has been like.
