During the 2023 RHI Sociable City Summit the NYC Office of Nightlife hosted a spotlight interview with with 90’s "Club King" Peter Gatien, by Mel Ottenberg, Editor-in-Chief of Interview Magazine. New York City is widely known for its legendary nightlife scene and history-making eras from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. Those times are remembered now as an exciting time that inspired millions worldwide but also witnessed new restrictions and criminalization of the industry. In this spotlight interview, 1990s club king Peter Gatien - at once both vilified and celebrated - Peter will sit with Interview magazine editor-in-chief Mel Ottenberg for a rare in-person interview about the highs and lows of his era and the legacy of Tunnel, Limelight, and other legendary New York nightclubs.
The interview will be followed by a conversation with current New York nightlife leaders to connect the past to the present. NYC Office of Nightlife Founding Director Ariel Palitz; Nebula Managing Partner, Richie Romero; Co-Founder of the House of Yes, Kae Burke and; Attorney and Founding member of NYC Hospitality Alliance Rob Bookman will discuss the state of the industry, the role of the Office of Nightlife and advocacy groups, and how far New York has come since those days.
