I've lived in NYC for 15 years. What I love about NYC: The people, the diversity, the energy, the vibe, the food, the parks, the culture, the opportunity What I hate about NYC: The prices, the rent, the MTA, the traffic, the rats, the bugs, the crazy people, the assholes I've lived in a few cities in my lifetime on the East Coast and West Coast and in the Midwest, but nothing comes close to the feeling of living and thriving in NYC. The good outweighs the bad

I lived in New York from the late 90s through the 2000s, a lot of that time in Williamsburg. We never complained how expensive the city was then. We could afford rent, and we were starving musicians. We had fun and were in the center of the action. It's disappointing now that when people think of New York, they think of the price. New York has always been a city of artists and musicians. I hope that reputation comes back.

I lived in NYC for about seven years from 1999 to 2006. I lived in Astoria Queens, which was an awesome neighborhood and I had a huge one bedroom apartment and I was only paying $875 a month at that time. What I love about NYC is like what many had mentioned the diversity, so many people from all over the world. It really is a melting pot. I also love the public transportation and not needing a car. It’s very freeing to just be able to hop on a train at any time 24 hours a day and go wherever you want. Also, the food! I have never had such amazing food, then when I lived in NYC. The people for the most part are pretty awesome. Very eclectic mix of people and everyone is just doing their own thing and you see people who just have very unique personalities, there’s an energy and Nyc that I have yet to find an any other city that I have been to. Also amazing opportunities for careers, whatever you are interested in, you could find it in NYC. My dislikes would be how dirty and gritty it can feel, and like others have mentioned the smell of garbage and piss on the streets is not very pleasant. Also, many of the apartments are in buildings that are hundreds of years old and they are very shoddy looking and very few amenities like dishwasher, laundry, etc. like the other gentleman in the video said, it can also feel overwhelming after being there for a while. It is a very high pace, high energy city, which is great, but sometimes can be overwhelming because your senses just go berserk trying to process everything. Oh, and the subway breakdowns would always annoy the crap out of me lol Overall, I do love NYC and met some of the most fascinating people when I lived there who I’m still friends with today. I’m actually going to be there in June for a visit.. Very excited!

As a New Yorker, I’ll tell you - I have a love hate relationship with NYC. Its such a crowded city but can be so lonely at times. A lot of great opportunities but very cut throat. Vibrant vibe but too expensive and the hustle culture is stressful. NYC is best for people with a lot of money. dont come here if you make less than 60k a year or living paycheck to paycheck. You will struggle and likely fall into depression. Personally, Im leaving NYC this year for a more chill lifestyle around more nature. The lack of sun and vitamin D here just isnt worth it to me.
@erin79

Life long New Yorker here too. There are some things I love about the city. Endless energy, so much culture, amazing food. But as I get older, it really starts to wear on me. It's dirty, loud, and more than probably anything, just too expensive. Even a casual sit down meal at a totally mid-level restaurant can run you like $70-100 per head--which means you really can't do it very often unless you're making a very good income. I've been lucky enough to travel a good amount, including all over Europe, and even in world class cities like Paris and Rome, you can get great meals for 1/3 that cost. And that's just one example. There's a lot to love about NY, but I think it's crossed the Rubicon into just being too expensive unless you are rich. I mean even if you make low 6 figures here, the idea of buying a home is still mostly a pipe dream. And with those insane costs of living, you start to see natives priced out. And some of the cultural strengths the city used to have, like attracting great artists, are not as prominent as they used to be, cus people like that simply don't make enough to live here these days. Indeed, I have a love/hate relationship with this place. But I think ultimately I will have to leave at some point. It's just too damn expensive.

@@Gabriela.H right on thanks for the advice. Yeah and I'm thinking about aiming for a chill hood not too far nor too close to the hustle. Possibly Hudson Heights as I see the subway taking about 30 minutes to get to the brunt of Manhattan. I'll be googling other hoods that are a little less noisy that aren't too crazy far from the action. Personally I like to keep things ambivert like that

😂 As a Swiss person, I'm not sure if I should cry or laugh. NYC gets over 2500 sunshine hours a year, in December you get over 140h. We get 1700 p.a., December has less than 50h. As a comparison, we get less sun here than Seattle. And that goes for all of Europe except the south. You guys have no clue how good you have it in that sense, I'd kill to get 2500h a year. VitD defficiency is real, we also call it winter depression.

I’ve been to New York several times. One time i visited in the month of June. I’m from a southwest state. Not used to humidity, I literally was sweating bullets. I was so miserable . We stumbled upon this castle in Central Park. I greeted the person at the entrance and signed the quest book on the table . When the woman found out where I was from , she was rude and asked how I could live there. Let’s just say she won’t ever forget me. …ever.

With so many cultures, it can be one of the cities most divided by colors and origins. In New York you can feel loneliness being next to hundreds of people because people don't care about you. It's just one more. and to make friends nowadays they prefer to use the internet. They always say they are free to be whatever they want in New York, but then they stay fixed in their native neighborhoods and don't want to mix. In Europe, an African nightclub has 50 Africans and 30 whites. in new york or other american cities the same club has 1 white person and 50 africans and they still find it strange that the white person is there. It's like it's territorial. They are not as open as they say.

Lived in NYC (Brooklyn, USA) for 28 years. I love the diverse cultures, the career opportunities, the parties, the food culture, the club culture, art & entertainment and access to anything at any hour of the day or night. What I hate is the cost of everything, the pseudo-liberal-utopian mentality (NYC is one of the most segrated places. People work with each other but they go home and don't congegrated with people who don't look like them. This is not ALL groups, but for the most part this is the case.), the crime, the subway at night time, the trash and rats.

Born&raised in Man, NYC left in ‘93. I hated d hustle& bustle..rat race. Having2 schlep groceries n laundry up 5flights of stairs. In d summer it rains a lot n no fail it always rained on the wknds😡Hated the long windy freezing winters..it’s why I left bcz of the harsh long N. Pole lik winters from Jan-April. Spring&Fall r just2wks each they come & go too quick..especially Spring then it’s the short hot humid summers..Then there’s the homeless, the filth, trash n all d ugly graffiti & the crazy entertainers on d subway..Then came Dinkin ( Mayor)..all went 2shit, lik it is now..No regrets on moving away from a city that was a struggle to live in..even tho I did enjoy moments living there.. I’m glad I was born n raised there but after a while life there just didn’t balance out..now I’m where I’m treated best & better..I hve a balanced life now😊

Everyone has a dream of living here, that is until they actually get here. What you see on TV isnt exactly what ur gonna see when you arrive here. Ur gonna have to deal with the high cost of living, homelesss folks living on the streets & elsewhere, drug addicts, alcoholics, etc. This place will eat you alive if you arent careful so you gotta keep ur head on a swivel.

Love your video on peoples' thoughts on New York, fascinating. I have never been but would love to go. I was born in Australia in the 50's and if you were slightly different people would comment in a derogatory way. I think I would love New York as I would love the energy and the eccentric people I would fit right in. Absolutely love Seinfeld and still watch the re-runs regularly. Such a brilliant show even though it is over 30 years old it is still relevant. It is universally loved and I would say is very New York in its culture and mind set even though it is set in LA. T

@John Flynn I agree...interestingly when the Jewish man said he didn't 'hate' anything, I remembered my 3rd grade teacher Mr.Hecht would always stop us when we used the word 'hate', to never use that word lightly. "What don't you love about NY?" wouldn't have changed the vibe of the interviews, they were excellent.

Lived in New York from 1995 to 2008. When I arrived Tribeca was deserted. Nobody lived there. Then it was all of a sudden a happening place. It changed fast. Same with the Meat Market. It changed in a very short time from a terrible-smell place where transvestites roamed the streets to the Disneyland it is today. I noticed that small mom and pop stores were slowly being replaced with too many of the same banks and drug stores. Gone was Industrial Plastics on Canal Street plus all the funky stores as well as the fabric stores on Broadway. Gone was Kims Video on St Marks. Gone was the fabulous flea market in Chelsea near 24th Street. I remember going out at the Tunnel and the Limelight. I noticed too many rich people and oligarchs moving in from other countries to escape taxes in their own countries which made it difficult for the locals to make rent. New York also became too corporate. Too much sameness. Everywhere a Chase, a Starbucks, Duane Reed/CVS, etc. It's utterly dreadful for the Soul. I miss the older New York.

What i dislike is the lack of good pizza anymore, there are only a handful of good pizza placed in NYC. Though I will say I left Rome 4/2 back to NYC and good NY pizza blows away good Italian pizza. I went to a well known place in rome rated 4.7 and it was tasty but gave me heartburn.

I just visited NYC. Had a great time, am glad I went. Maybe it’s where I’m at in life, but it’s not a place I would want to live. If I were about 30 years younger, I might feel differently. I have lived, worked and gone to school in a large city and that was it for me. Not sure I could handle the high prices associated with living in a city. But this was interesting insight.

I have been living in NY for 31 years. They make it really difficult to survive. Its super expensive. A studio apartment is about two thousand dollars. Everyone is rude and not friendly. The subway system sucks. There are always homeless people in the train station sleeping. Its dangerous to travel you always have to be alert. The crime rate is ridiculous. Teens are running around with guns killing innocent people for no reason. They get locked up then to be released back in society. The criminal justice system is a joke. Police officers are retiring early because people who are suppose to be in prison are being let out in the streets. There are no consequences for there actions. The city is overpopulated especially since more people from other countries are moving here so its making it difficult to find them housing and health care. The food isn't all that great. The majority of the food is oily and not good for you. There isn't really anything to do here besides museums, restuarants, clubs, shopping, drinking, bowling and movies. If you enjoy nature, hiking, camping, kayaking then NYC is not the place to live. I'm a nature girl so I would want to live in a place where I am able to do activities like camping, horse back riding, ziplining. I cannot wait to leave this crappy ass city. I hate it.
