Jodi and Nick react to Peter Kay. He is talking to Parkinson about how to break into America as an act and tells a great story about a time he spent in Las Vegas.

The red paper poppy flowers are made by volunteers and are sold leading up to remembrance day (what you call Veterans Day). All the profits made go to help military veterans. They represent the fallen of the great war and the thousands of acres of poppies that grew on the battlefields after the war. The poppies flourished due to the nitrates left in the ground by millions of artillery rounds. There is a beautiful and solemn poem about Flanders poppy fields: *In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.*

Michael Parkinson was one of our greatest talk show hosts. He had absolutely amazing guests on his show, in the days when actors, musicians etc were not trying to sell their latest film, book or music. I mean seriously ‘A’ listers like james Cagney, Bing Crosby, James Stewart, Bob Hope, Fred Astaire. He was very much like your Dick Cavett. & strangely enough, when revisiting Cavett’s shows, one will find Michael Parkinson on one of them as a guest. We sadly lost Michael Parkinson this year (2023).

The flower is the poppy we wear in the UK around Remembrance Day in respect for the fallen originally after the Great War (WW1)...then it became a symbol of the fallen of all wars, however funny enough it was an American who started it after WW1, but it never really took off in America and a year later the British used the idea and ran with it till this day ❤

Our red poppy is a symbol of both Remembrance and hope for a peaceful future. Poppies are worn as a show of support for the Armed Forces community.Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth member states since the end of the First World War to honour armed forces members who have died in the line of duty. The day is also marked by war remembrances in several other non-Commonwealth. In most countries, Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of First World War hostilities. Hostilities ended "at the 11th hour of the 11th.

Parkie led the way for chat shows and he interviewed actors, comedians, singers, politicians etc and was on every Saturday night for years. On his last show he had his favourite guests on which included Peter Kay and Billy Connolly with Peter Kay misbehaving as usual. The red poppy they are wearig is for Remembrance Day which is held every year to remember the fallen in all the wars - it's a very emotional and you should watch the ceremony at the centotaph in London

Digs is another term for B&B where people rent a bedroom in a house (mostly in seaside towns or cities) for a short stay whether its a short break or a business trip (usually its bed and breakfast, with some doing evening meals also). It's a low cost option to hotels. It's usually in large family houses, where it's used as a business opportunity historically to help the home owner to supplement the income.

The funny clown flower is in fact the Poppy :- During the First World War previously beautiful countryside was blasted, bombed and fought over, again and again. The landscape swiftly turned to fields of mud where little or nothing could grow. But out of this devastation the delicate but resilient bright red Flanders poppies grew and flourished in their thousands. The Royal British Legion sell them every year beginning of November Typically they are sold by Army Vets standing outside shops. 1. Wearing a poppy is a show of support for the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces, veterans and their families.. It represents all those who lost their lives on active service, from the beginning of the First World War right up to present day. It also honours the contribution of civilian services and the uniformed services which contribute to national peace and security and acknowledges innocent civilians who have lost their lives in conflict and acts of terrorism. 2.The poppy has been a symbol of Remembrance for over 100 years 3.The red poppy directly supports the Armed Forces community 4.Poppies are sold in every community across the UK.

It’s also big in New Zealand and Australia. The poppies are sold prior to ANZAC Day (Australia New Zealand Army Corps) 25 April, in remembrance of all those who gave their lives in war for their country. The money raised goes to war veterans and families of those who have served. “Lest we forget”.

I once sang Candle In the Wind in a pub in Cessnock, NSW, Australia, and the lyrics came up to the Diana version, but I sang the original Marilyn Monroe lyrics, and got a huge round of applause afterwards, partially because that meant I sang it to the audience and never looked at the screen! Also - shout out to those great (terrible) Black Lace songs from the 80s!

I notice from the comments that many people have explained the meaning of the “red poppy” and its huge significance to the people of the UK and the Commonwealth. The Poppy is a symbol of remembrance for the fallen from two World Wars and all conflicts since, is sold in the lead up to Remembrance Day to help support veterans and their families through physical, mental and emotional trauma. Please note that purple poppies are now often seen in remembrance of the millions of animals killed in WW1 & other conflicts. You may also be interested to know that in France the flower of remembrance is the Cornflower, in Belgium, the Daisy, in the Netherlands, the Crocus and in Germany, the Forget-Me-Not. The tradition of wearing a sprig of Rosemary, to remember the fallen, goes back to Roman times and can be seen in early photographs, prior to WW1. “Lest we forget”.

Michael Parkinson once, if not more had legendary cricket umpire "dickie bird" on his show. Harold Dennis "Dickie" Bird, OBE (born 19 April 1933), is an English retired international cricket umpire. During his long umpiring career, he became a much-loved figure among players and viewing public, due to his excellence as an umpire, but also his many eccentricities. Bird played first-class cricket for Yorkshire and Leicestershire as a right-handed batsman, but only scored two centuries in 93 appearances. His career was blighted by a knee injury, which eventually caused him to retire aged 31. He umpired in 66 Test matches (at the time a world record) and 69 One Day Internationals including 3 World Cup Finals. In February 2014, Yorkshire announced that Bird was to be voted in as the club's president at their Annual General Meeting on 29 March. Bird's autobiography, published in 1997, has sold more than a million copies. In his early career in Barnsley, he played club cricket in the same team as journalist and chat show host Michael Parkinson, who became a lifelong friend, they were later joined in the team by Geoffrey Boycott. Geoffrey Boycott, Michael Parkinson and Harold Dennis "Dickie" Bird are all Yorkshiremen. Before he played in first-class cricket, Boycott played for the successful Barnsley Cricket Club, making his debut in 1959 and becoming a regular team member that year alongside Dickie Bird and Michael Parkinson. What you really need to know is that the British make fun of everyone. They DON'T make fun of people they don't like. We make so much fun of ourselves, and that's hard for Americans to understand. So if a British person cracks a joke that you might think is at your expense, they will be waiting for you to do likewise. That will then seal the friendship. That is the truth. You have a choice to be offended, or you join in the fun.

You have to recognise for the firstst 10 years we only had 3 TV stations and it took a further 15 before there was more than 4. He literally was the (only) man. Mrs Merton was a much better interviewer though, you should check her out.

Most Americans wouldn't understand Peter Kay's comedy. Because it's all situational comedy. All about the things that have happened in his life, growing up as a Northern English, Working Class lad. A LOT of southern English still don't get the jokes to this day!

Parkinson was a good chat show host, if you like a good laugh checkout his interviews with Billy Connolly and Robin Williams.

The reason British comics either fail or don’t bother with the US is, every 2 seconds they hear “what did he or she say, I don’t understand them”. So why bother because it kills the show.

Shame about the comment about the flower that a clown might have. It is a very respected symbol representing the lost servicemen and women in the world wars. It is called poppy day and they are sold to benefit ex servicemen. There is a you tube post about the tower of london where the moat was filled with poppies representing one fir each of the fallen servicemen and women. Well worth looking at. Otherwise great review you two

@@dib000why unsubscribe they wasn't aware what the poppy means or represents to people,if they knew and took the piss I could understand you being upset, but they didn't and I bet they would never be disrespectful about the poppy now knowing what it is

“Night in digs” means having a night in the place you are staying in rather than going out.

Parkinson only died about a month or so ago. He was THE chat show host. He was widely regarded as the best, because genuine conversations were had, rather than it being a shallow vehicle for the guest to promote some new product, or for the host to make it all about themselves. It is worth looking up the significance of the poppy in the UK. Some arseholes will probably jump on the opportunity to attack you for not knowing about it, but the intelligent amongst us, understand why you didn't.

I live a couple of miles away from Peter Kay's home town of Bolton. And I do get every reference. But I can see how many people from other parts of the UK might not get everything he alludes to, and non-Brits even more so. They say write about what you know. And he certainly does that very well in stand-up form. I think if he wanted to succeed in America he would have to seriously adapt his terminology and subject matter, though I think his accent is reasonably easy to understand compared to some British accents, and his clever observations obviously still shine through to you guys. But clearly some of his "regionally-orientated" comedy is lost in translation. Unlike, say, Ricky Gervais' or even that entire geezer Micky Flanagan, the famous Cockney sandwich thief. You are not exactly Saint Nicholas in that shirt and cap, Nick. At least Jodi is looking Christmassy. Hehe!

A night in “digs” means staying in the room or the house if it’s a B&B.

You now have to do a reaction to Black Lace, Aggado and Superman. They are your average party songs that get played at weddings and holiday camps. (Don’t know if you have those over there.) A bit like, what you call the Chiken song but over here it’s the birdy song or the YMCA. A piece of music or song that has dance moves. Massive but tacky as hell here.

Everyone other than the Brits, seems to miss, because of the accent, the very last laugh as the red curtain comes down, he's ordering a take away by phone and asks if they deliver, the guy answering thinks he asked if they do Liver, and says no, chicken fish and lamb, boom boom. 😀
