This elegant song was introduced in 1914 by Julia Sanderson & Donald Brian in the American production of 'The Girl From Utah'. According to legend, the audience was able to hum the contagious melody after hearing it during the overture. I was friends with the lovely actress Ina Claire, who was the female lead (Una) in the original London cast, which had no songs by Jerome Kern

I Liked the way Peter Mintum played this song. He played it so well and full. Sounded like a Piano Roll. Good to see him plat this song. Fantastic.

This is such a beautiful song you can get emotionally attached to. Thank you sir for playing as beautiful as it can be. I am a young crooner myself I'm 23 years old. Trying to bring the music back. I am also happy that Boardwalk Empire can show the audiences What was 'music' I am from a different era I believe I should never of been here. Nothing interests me of today. Keep on bringing happiness!

...In the dream, this is the exact song Mr. Gershwin played. I recall that he made a little speech to the audience about how great a composer Jerome Kern was, and how this outstanding song caught his attention when it first came out. He then proceeded to play a marvelous version of it on the piano. I recall that I was awestruck and was nearly in tears when I woke up. I immediately rushed to our piano and turned on my digital recorder, which fortunately I'd recently received for Christmas...

Thank you, Peter! I love this song, especially that line "that from this great big world ...." One of my favorite memories is of you sitting down and playing for nearly an hour at my Merman book party at the Hirshbeins. The guests were mesmerized--as well they should have been.

Hello, Peter, I saw you in performance at the Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley many years ago, with Napa Valley Symphony. I love this song. It's one of my favorite Kern songs. This is the first time I have heard the verse. Let's have a glass of wine when you are in San Francisco.

"Melody Museum" - love it. We need many more such museums, especially in this day and age of "crap" music and techno-pop idiocy.

Hello Peter ---- it's been quite a while since I used to on business in California and hear you play at the L'Etoille at the Huntington on Nob Hill. A Swiss couple who dined with me there once still remember their night with you, and we reflect on it. Keep on with your wonderful playing. All the best. Dale Johnson Dallas

On the night of March 14 - 15th, 2011, I had a dream that I was in a radio station in the mid-1930s (1935?) and George Gershwin himself was the host of the radio show. In the dream, Gershwin was seated at the piano (I can't remember if it was a grand or an upright, but now I'm thinking an upright), and I was seated immediately to the left (bass) side of him near the keyboard, on a stool, where I was able to keep quiet and watch his hands as he announced into a microphone and played piano...

...Unfortunately I was only able to remember and play 8 bars of Mr. Gershwin's version from the dream, specifically bars 1-4 and 20-23 of the chorus. Oh well, at least I got those recorded. There must have been SOMETHING to this dream, since I had never played Mr. Kern's song before, nor was I sure, until playing the sheet music, that I had the right title (I couldn't hum or whistle it from memory). But, we did have the music in a songbook, and I must have at least heard it somewhere before.
