One more step on the minimalist journey - going fishing with just one fly: in this case my Brown Trout Weamer.
Think when we were kids and we'd jump on our bikes to ride down to the local river or pond, with just our rod and whatever was on the end of the line. No big tackle boxes, no huge assortment of lures, just a spoon, plug, spinner, or a can of worms.
Time to get back to that simplicity.

I had an Eagle Claw rod, Mitchell 300. Grab it and go, did I. Simplicity is something I am trying for too. Did use an old Pfluger Medalist reel fishing last night. Works great!!

Peter: “my 50 something year old Shakespeare rod and Mitchell 300...” Me: (old guy, spitting coffee) “Dude! That’s MY fishing outfit!!!!” Peter: “sometimes we overcomplicate it” Me: (friendly sarcasm) “UNDER-statement of the year...” Peter: “Try it!” Me: “Heck yea!! Thanks, Peter!!!” Best video of 2021.

Guess what? After shooting that video I took the reel apart, greased it, loaded some fresh line and put it on my rack in the garage, waiting for the next trip. It'll still catch fish. Just to keep in the spirt of the thing, I left some of the 40 something year old mono on it and added some PowerPro on top. However, since I never managed to have enough line to fill a spool, I left it well short of being full. Wouldn't feel right being out with a full spool.

@@hooked4lifeca Of course it wouldn’t! Thats a nice image, the rod and reel, with some fresh line now hanging in the rack, ready for adventure. In some ways I think one fly fishing teaches a lot. Maybe those small fish are there because they’re crowded out from the best holding / feeding areas by the big fish. And, I guess you are forced to work on presentation of THAT fly and how to fish it. Very interesting. But the best part is being free of all the stuff. Closer to the world around you. Thanks again! Love your channel.

Fun idea; I keep a rod in my car at all times for pop-up angling opportunities but I have not tried going out with one fly. That is a challenge.

When I worked I used to do that as well as my job had me driving all over the province. After the work day was over, sometimes there was an opportunity to wet a line.

I tend to reach for the analogy. Of cullinary work. In this instance. Cooking food. It's a big cultural thing. In all parts of the world. It's always specific. There was one film from the early nineties. I saw in the art house cinema. A lot time ago (the more recent film 'Burnt' with Bradley Cooper based in London, is a little similar). It echoes some of the same idea. For a story. The original though. That I saw was 'Eat, Drink, Man, Woman'. And basically. It was about one of these chefs. Who worked at the top of his profession. He'd done it all. He had reached a stage. Where he had lost complete interest. In cooking. Even though. He was the equivalent. Of a master in this (the Bradley Cooper movie, is slightly different). In that it comments on how things change. And people who were once at the cutting edge. Are left behind. As part of history. The friction that happens. When the younger and older generations. Interact.

Fishing is a thing. That is like food in general. It is very specific. To different regions. It changes. When you travel. People know a lot more. About cullinary changes in things. Because it is something. They interact directly with. As they move around. It's one of the things. That signifies. You are moving. From one place to another. Fishing and hunting. Is the same however. Only not many people. Interact with that. To the same degree. As they are forced to do. With the cullinary changes in landscape (and the changes in time too). Bradley Cooper's character. Returns back again to London. And he hopes to reconnect. With his old routine and places. That he used to know. However, the surprise he is in for. Is that all of those places. Have changed now. And he doesn't fit in. Like he used to. The younger chef's. Who are coming up. Use different tools and appliances. They use a different language. And think about food. In a way. That is not the same. As how he does.

What is interesting. About the early nineties film. Both of the films. Deal with similar ideas. Of the master chef. Who has 'lost their way'. However, they are different movies. And I don't think. Many of the film critics. Even liked either of them. To be honest. Although, I think they are both fascinating stories. Myself. Having lived and worked. In urban places. It speaks a lot to me. About how cities never remain the same. For very long. The place stays the same. But the people and procedures. Never do. Which is inconvenient. If you are looking for something. That doesn't change. The nice part. About 'Eat, Drink, Man, Woman' film. From the early nineties. Is that it talks about a guy. Who had gone right to the very highest level. That you could achieve. In his profession. And in order to find his way again. He had to go back. Right to where it all started from.

So the Bradley Cooper film. Is not the same as that. The Bradley Cooper film. Deals with the fellow. Who is speaking. In a language that was 'all the rage'. Only a decade earlier. And now. Speaking to the younger generation. Who are coming up. He is speaking in a language. That makes no sense to them. It's about. How different languages. Find a way. To work together. Or not. The Bradley Cooper film. Is also one. About how competitive. These professionals can be. With each other (and even though, they are competitive and don't work together well). They are total 'individuals'. They understand each other. Better than anyone else. Understands them. They are part. Of a very select group. In that sense. I can notice that. In professional bass angling. In the United States too. You find a lot of the Bradley Cooper kind of thing. Going on. It's really a competition. To decide who's 'recipe'. Is the finest.

And that aspect. If my memory serves me correctly. Came a little bit. Into the story of 'Eat, Drink, Man, Woman'. Literally because. They find themselves. As two very accomplished chefs. Closer to the end of their careers. Than the start of it. And looking around. At younger chefs (Japanese society being very much one, that respected rank and status). And in ways. That we have probably lost. Here in the western world. The two aging masters. Of Japanese cooking. Look around them. And they wonder. About why the youth. Don't apply themselves. In the same way. As they should. To their craft. It's a whole comment. About that trend. In the broader society. Of the early 'high tech' age too. Where in the early nineties. You were just starting to witness. That change in society. Taking place.

Put Peter Charles for example. Into the modern day. Instead of Peter Charles. With a bicycle and a fishing rod. According to what the professional bass anglers in America have said. It's Peter Charles and his own personal 'brand'. And media campaign. To establish his brand. In addition to winning junior competitions. And being a part. Of the 'circuit' for professional angling (sort of like parents encourage young kids to become professional golfers and tennis players). This is how. The professional fishing sport. Is going. We have to ask ourselves. What is the equivalent. Of Peter Charles. In 2021? And are we comfortable. With that picture. Or not comfortable? With it? That is a question. And if I am correct. It's a long time. Since I watched the film. About Japanese cooking. In the early nineties. In an arthouse cinema. In Dublin. But I know. That was some part of it. The old man who was the master chef. Didn't know. Where his 'set of values'. Fitted into modern Japanese culture. Any longer.

I like your videos, but your audio is not coming thru with very much volume so its a little hard to hear.

Could you please let me know what operating system you're using (e.g. Windows, Mac, etc.) and what browser you're using to view RU-vid. This only seems to affect a few people and I have yet to find out why. If I push the volume any higher on my videos, the audio will clip and if I push the gain on my mic any further, I'll be dealing with distortion. it's probably an audio format compatibility issue, so that's why I'm asking.
