Peter Sagan is here at Volta a Catalunya to get some more racing in the legs before his classics campaign and today was the last opportunity for the sprinters to get anything out this race. Sagan and the other sprinters were denied by a late breakaway move on stage 1, but Bora-Hansgrohe and UAE Team Emirates controlled this stage up until the messy bunch sprint finale.

Pretty clear now that he is in good form and well positioned for a better 2021 than 2020. First win last year wasn't until the Giro stage! Great to see him take this stage but also makes you wish he was at Gent Wevelgem with a chance for a record 4th win (although that would have been for naught since Bora got held out entirely in the end).

The world of cycling is back! It was bizarro world for about 2 years. But, Sagan winning a bunch sprint in typical Sagan fashion (no leadout; following the right wheel; punching at the perfect moment) puts things in order for us cycling fans.

Even though Sagan has not been as consistently winning recently he is still there at the finish line in the top 5...as his power fades his race craft is still exceptional and he remains one of the most surgically accurate riders in the game. Id love to see a list of his finishes in 2020 and 2019...in my memory he is always there right beside Bennet or Wout when he doesn't win the sprint. Sounds pretty consistent to me.
@Pursuitofperformance
@Pursuitofperformance 3 года назад
Absolutely he is. Looking back at 2020 results where he was painted as having a really bad year he was top 5 on 17 occasions. He didn't win in the TDF but he had finishes of 5,5,4,3,4,3 (recall there was a relegation in there as well). He was 4th at Milan Sanremo and Milano Torino. At the giro he won a stage and had 4 2nd place finishes behind Arnaud Demare, 4! He will be sharper this season and when you are this close to the hoop, a small improvement will mean more dunks!

Hope Sagan recovered properly after Covid. Had Covid myself in summer and when it's over you're not healthy anymore, even if it feels like it's over. and you're destroying your body by starting training too early. But Sagan probably recovers very fast so you can just hope he has no effects afterwards.

So my question is how many races would he have won I'd he actually had a top notch lead out team. For f's sake he has had to free lance it every race. Yes, he is the master at it. No better proof than the number of times he has finished second or third. Do you really think their is any successful sprinter that has anything close to peters success without their leadout train?

I don’t deny Covid at all. Its nasty but its surely exaggerated. Kills up to 2 in 1000, average age 80+ and most often sick already. Small impact on overall death rate, which in 2020 was lower than in most years of my life. Im neither stupid, complacent, anti vax nor anti science. I just try to maintain independence of thought and judgement in the face of politicised and sensationalised news feed.
@Maxboyrm85
@Maxboyrm85 3 года назад
@@hisdadjames4876 its not just the death rate though is it, it is the hospitalisation rate which overburdens hospitals.
