Sagan is not quite Sagan just yet. He had an issue on Stage 2 with Jakobsen, and again on Stage 3 with van Aert. He wasn’t “furious” by any means. He’s just very competitive and had the legs to win. What he is missing is his unique ability to weave his way through chaos and win the stage like only he could do. So, he’s frustrated. But, he is so very close. I think he now has enough races under his belt to win a stage in this year’s Tour like the Sagan of old. It would be great to have him back!

When I saw the sprint I was thinking why does Laporte goes to the left and forces Wout to start his sprint so early. Laporte may have made a mistake by not going on the barriers, but Wout made a mistake by leaving his wheel. If he follows Laporte - he wins. Laporte makes another mistake by sprinting even farther left - opening the door for Groenevegan.

If the UCI applied there rules to all teams instead of hand picking who they apply penalties to, they would have relegated WVA. The rules clearly state that once you start your sprint you should no deviate from your line and endanger another rider. Blind Freddy could see WVA did both, front on you could see he deviated nearly 5m from when he started the sprint and nearly put Sagan into the barrier. While the UCI pick and choose who they want to apply rules to, it is only a matter of time before there is another incident like Jakobsen and Groenewegen.

I think Laporte assumed that Morkov was going to move to barriers, so he decided to move left. But since Morkov moved to left, Laporte and Van Aert had to pass him from different sides, which led Van Aert lose Laporte's wheel. Laporte attacked to lead out Van Aert again, but as Van Aert had already started his sprint the moment he lost Laporte's wheel, so they could not meet again.
@SorenCicchini

I think so, too, and Morkov looking over his right shoulder with 300 m to go reinforced his idea that going left was the correct move at that time to get a half second jump on his sprint with his man on his wheel and no other leadout train in sight. It's hard to fault him for this.

I think you really do Sagan a disservice by saying that he divebombed that final corner. It looked to me that he simply chose the correct line and made everyone else look like amateurs. He didn't exit the corner hard up against the barriers and was pedalling almost immediately after the apex. Do you think that he impeded anyone?

Was constantly monitoring YT for today's recap to be uploaded. Would love to hear the audio of what he said. In the defense of the broadcasters, after watching the sprint finish live, I 100% though sagan was angry because of Wout moving over and ruining his chances, but in the slomo replay of Sagan shouting and pointing he does have kind of a smile on his face when he says whatever he says, and then 10 seconds later goes and pats Wout on the back?

Wout apparently can do no wrong, Belgian commentators have such a blindspot they automatically assumed Sagan was pointing to Groenewegen 🙈 The jury should be more strict to avoid nasty crashes.

Yeh lol they were like why is Sagan mad... If this wasnt Sagan than van Aert wouldve been relegated I think. Sagan is the most aggresive rider of them all so he cant really complain. At 1.2km to he uswd his hands twice vs a rider from Alpecin. He is the last one to complain Still van Aert shouldve been dq'd in dayresult.

I've always defended WvA as a clean sprinter, but in this case, it's a textbook relegation. WvA isn't dumb and left just enough space so in front of the jury, his team could argue he didn't push Sagan into the barriers and technically Sagan still had some space to sprint, but it was too late for WvA to close the right, he should have kept the middle and who knows, by keeping the middle and thus preventing Groenewegen from finding a gap, he could have had a bigger chance for the win.

Yes Van Aert goes to the right, but when he does, is far enough in front of Sagan to do so. Later on he stays on his line and Sagan gets close to the barriers because they are not in a straight line and suddenly go a bit inside. Van Aert didn't do anything wrong there if you ask me...

That's just asinine, this was probably one of the largest line deviations in a mass sprint this year. I think the correct assessment is that people are 100% willing to pretend like it's not a big deal because it was Wout who did the chopping. If you want to see someone "working the umps", watch Cavendish throwing a shit-fit because Richeze moved 1m to the right in Tour of Oman Stage 6.

You do know how many times Sagan’s been punished for doing that, right? He got kicked out a few years ago for something that was arguably the other rider’s fault. That’s why he hesitated, here. He could’ve pushed WVA, but knew he’d be relegated for it.

If you watch the sprint from the front, just looks like a bunch of guys going for it. Yes WVA went to the side but was not an intentional move, and was in the heat of the sprint, hard to keep it straight…The barrier deviation at the same time encroaching on Sagan doesn’t help either. But great exhilarating sprint finish. And yeah Philipsen came from way back! Another metre and maybe his.
@someinconsequentialusernam7799
@someinconsequentialusernam7799 2 года назад
Hard to keep it straight? Do you think this is amateur hour? These guys do this all year long at the highest levels. There are rules that make van Aert’s move illegal specifically because it’s one way to cheat. van Aert should’ve been relegated, but the race directors decide which rules they want to apply and to whom.
