Peugeot says its most powerful 208 evokes the spirit of the 1984 205 GTI -- the car many consider the greatest hot hatchback of all time. Can the 208 live up to the legend?

Fair enough review. I think this is one of the more balanced review on the 208 Gti. About the old Peugot 205 though,, I have never driven a 205 Gti but have driven a 205 Rallye on many occasions. I have to say that car never felt trust worthy in terms of going around corners. Personally it was a bit of a dissapointment. 208Gti however, was a big positive surprise for me.

As I said, I actually used to own a 205 1.6 GTI. It only started about one morning in two, but when it was working it was a fantastic car. I genuinely think it justifies the hype. I've driven all Peugeot's subsequent GTIs and only the 106 and 306 came close. Perhaps there is an element of nostalgia when talking about the 205, but surely every motoring journalist can't be wrong? As for testing cars ourselves, nobody tests as thoroughly as Which? - on the road, on-track and in the test lab. Tim.

Great for real drivers! 205, 106 and 208 the best gti cars from peugeot! If you want balanced car with great history and emotion in this category! French in small category was always decent and fun driver!!!!!

That's why I can find endless posts on the internet regarding which? items that don't make cut. I've watched your tests. I like your fuel tests. Such sweeping statements based on such narrow testing. How does it just the hype? It was light and had a neutral/oversteer balance. whoop-de-doo. I had no trouble against a 1.6 in an XR2 at sprints and when I bought a 1.9 GTI because of the hype I was truly disappointed and was beaten by a 206 GTI (not 180) at every event that year. Both cars standard!!

I bought one to give driving lessons to my learners. You need confidence to control the power of 200 horses and the pupil. I enjoy teaching in this car, best one so far and the only instructor to have one. Can't be bad ;-)

I've got a 208 GTi and I love it but two points to consider which have nothing to do with performance, but you need to think about if you are thinking about the GTI. 1 the red strip on the front of the car does not match the red on the rest (Peugeot label, inside dash etc) which is annoying when you walk towards it and secondly that glorious stainless steel gear knob is bloody cold in the morning. These may seem minor issues but spend £20000+ and then try and live with them. It's a great car but it drinks juice like an alkie on meths, oh and mine has a weird sucking noise from under the bonnet that Robins and Day in Glasgow still can't sort out, enjoy yours and if it means anything my spaced out neighbour thinks it looks Boss from the rear

I've owned a 205gti a 206gti and the 208gti the 205 is a legend no doubt, amazing looking car what I don't get is the hate for the 206gti, it was also a great car equally as fun more reliable in a corner and if you watch top gear the 206 180 destroyed the 205 and I always believed my 206 was quicker than my 205, my 206 kept up with the current st fiesta road racing recently until I bought the 208,, and yes the 208bis new generation fast, much quicker than all of them, great looks bags of power and will definitely be a legend although not from sales stats I doubt,, the only huge disappointment was the 207gt my ex girlfriend owned,, great looking car full leather interior panoramic roof f1 style front bumper but the under power it had and unreliablabilty was astonishingly bad....

Our tests cover every aspect of a car, from ride comfort to visibility to boot space. So they can't really be defined as 'narrow'. Most magazines and websites simply drive a car for a few hours and then write about it - Which? goes much further. I'm sure if you search the internet you can find people who disagree with absolutely everything - but that's hardly the point. Also, the fact that an XR2 or 206 will beat a 205 in a straight-line sprint is irrelevant. Neither car is as much fun to drive.

The 206 GTI and 207 GTI failed to capture the dynamic finesse of the original 205. In short, they were nowhere near as fun to drive, and that's what hot hatches are all about. Peugeot explicitly linked the 208 GTI with the 205 when it was launched and claimed it was a return to former glories. We wanted to see if that was really the case. cheers, Tim

Yawn. There was nothing wrong with either the 206 and 207 GTi's. I've driven them all and they weren't bad cars at all. The 205 was no-where near as special as people make out. I failed to see the apparent massive increase of fun in a Clio 182 over a 206 180. I'd be happy in either down a B road or at a track day. Stop reading magazines and actually test cars yourself before buying one. I almost always disagree with Which? in areas I can comparatively test myself.
