Peugeot 3008 Review: Sophisticated Comfort

The first generation Peugeot 3008 may have been able to win a few plaudits, but the design wasn't the most of attractive as it looked more like an MPV rather than an SUV. The second generation model is now here, and that has fixed this issue.
In fact, it's quite a striking looking car, which is just as well as it will need to stand out in the overcrowded SUV market. It needs to be more than just a pretty face though, does it have other things that matter to buyers? Is it safe? Is it comfortable? Is it well-equipped? Is it practical?
I recently had the chance to test one to find out. The model tested is the Allure trim level, which is one up from the base model and is priced from £24,565. It's fitted with the 1.2 litre PureTech petrol engine which offers 129bhp and 230Nm of torque.
Mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and front wheel drive - no four wheel drive is available - it's about to hit 62mph in 10.8 seconds and the top speed is 117mph.
What's it like to drive though? Check out this video review to find out.

Says something with the quality of your videos that I detest SUVs and Peugeots. Yet here I am watching and enjoying.

Cheers Matt, I was quite chuffed with some of the camera angles used for this video, especially the one for the front grille. As always, thanks for watching! Oh, and you'll be pleased to hear, I have another Peugeot SUV coming next month! 😂
@villarule06
@villarule06 6 лет назад
That is an interesting angle, does make the best of the grille. The virtual cockpit does look cool to be fair! Do you have big plans for 2018? Your stuff is really developing well, could rival much bigger competition tbh.
@CarObsession
@CarObsession 6 лет назад
Cheers Matt, appreciate it. The I-Cockpit is very good, better than I thought it would be if I'm going to be completely honest. Any big plans? No, not really in all honesty. At the moment, I find I have some periods where I have not much going on and then I get invited to things out of the blue and all of a sudden, I'm busy - it can be rather spontaneous and sporadic. It's also difficult for me as I have a full time job, and because all the events I get invited to are weekdays, I have to book annual leave from my day job. This means that I have to ration it, so I have to be careful about which events I go to. I don't want to be invited to a McLaren event for example, and then find that I can't get away from my office job. When I went to see the new Continental GT, I actually had to straight to work once I was done, which was far from ideal, but such is life. Yes, the channel is growing - albeit slowly - but I'm hoping the pace really picks up next year. The only problem is, the more it grows, the more events I'll get invited to, and as I mentioned a few moments ago, there is only so much annual leave I can use!

Really good and fair review: thank you. I've owned a 3008 Allure 1.2L auto for 6 months and it's a cracking bit of kit. You are absolutely right about it becoming a little skittish when it encounters a rough surface in the middle of a bend; but in fairness, I experienced the same with my BMW 520d. The auto box works really well with the 1.2L, 3 cylinder engine. I have completed 3000 miles and have averaged 45 mpg over that distance. On a regular 200 mile round trip I average 50.4 mpg. As for rear space, I have carried four adults and a two year old in mine on several occasions without a problem, but none of the adults are taller than 5' 9". The i-Cockpit is brilliant (I had head up display on my BMW but do not miss it). I was given a £2000 discount as soon as I sat down and above book for my BMW. I think I did quite well. The only options I chose were metallic paint and full size spare tyre/alloy wheel (£100).

Great review. Very well done and informative. I’m traveling to the UK in May and giving serious thought to renting the 3008. Both my wife and I drive Subaru Outbacks. My biggest concern on hiring a 3008 is passenger seat comfort. My wife is very particular about car seating. The 3008 is not available here in California. So I guess the only way to know will be to put her in one and see.

Great review! Just had a test drive in this car this morning. Wholey agree with all you say. I’d say to any driver in the market for a stylish SUV but that also gets the basics right. Do yourself a huge favour. Test drive one. And don’t get solely sucked into the Tigun/Q3/Ateca snobbery. This is a lovely car and worthy of car of the year. I was surprised at the 1.2 engine. I went into the dealership thinking, meh. It’s gonna be under powered and a rubbish drive. I was wrong. Very wrong.
@CarObsession
@CarObsession 6 лет назад
Hey Dominic, thanks for watching! I can understand why people would turn towards the Tiguan/Q3/Ateca trio, but the 3008 has got a lot to offer. Yes, the clunky gearchange and body roll means it's not a car for keen drivers, but for most buyers I don't think that would matter that much. I've not driven a Q3 or a Tiguan, but I have driven an Ateca, and personally I think I'd rather have that, only because I prefer the way in which it drives. The 3008 is definitely a nicer place to sit in, and it has a bigger boot, which will be a big plus for buyers. Peugeot has done very well with this car. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would if I'm honest.

@@CarObsession I'd disagree with the car not being for keen drivers. I ride a 1100cc hypersport so I know a thing or two about spirited riding and my 3008 keeps me well entertained through the corners, the body roll is there but it doesn't take away from the fun at all. Absolutely love this thing :)

Interesting review, Aaron. Like your down to earth style.Looking to replace my Kuga AWD Tit. Either this or the new 5008. My only reservations is the space in the rear. I felt it too cramped in my driving position for my son. And I'm 5'8". Do you have short legs for a 6'ft man, lol!! Also, does the styling or the centre console make your driving position feel cramped?
@CarObsession

Hello greycounciller, thanks for watching. I'm actually testing the 5008 this week (in fact it's being delivered this afternoon) so I'll be doing a review on that as well. No, I don't have short legs, all my jeans/trousers are 'long' when it comes length. In regards to the driving position, at no point did I feel cramped.

Thanks for that. I haven't driven a Peugeot since the 405 many, many moons ago. Liked there drive quality on motorways. Also, do you ever get a chance to test the phone call quality with Bluetooth. Very important for me when driving out and about.

The one thing that puts me off buying this car,the heating controls. Having to press the short cut button to get into the main menu,then to adjust the heating on the screen,all this while driving ? Why didn't Peugeot add a turn button so you don't have to take your eyes off the road when adjusting the temperature? Surely it's an accident waiting to happen,has anybody got any issues with this or is it just me? Also long term ownership,just how reliable are these when it comes to the electrics ? Other than that I love this car and will certainly have a test drive in one,I currently drive a Kia Sportage 2.0 diesel and it's never let me down in three years of ownership.

Hello Robert, thanks for watching, and thanks for commenting. Yes, the climate control is a bit of pain, I'd much prefer physical control. In regard to reliability, a quick bit of research suggests that the 3008 should be OK, so fingers crossed.

I have the LED Lights on an allure, being 6'4 it feels a little claustrophobic with the headroom in the pano roof so I wasn't bothered about having it - like your review car. I was lucky enough to have a GT to test drive twice - including overnight on an extended drive. I had mine delivered in May, in bianca white it got stared at. Decent car, although the middle head rest doesn't lock up so is more for show. The seats are great (I went for the massage/8way electric and leather all around), including the ability to put the front seat forward to make a large load carrying capability.
@CarObsession
@CarObsession 6 лет назад
I had the LED headlights on the 5008 GT Line I tested recently and my word, were they bright. So bright in fact that I had other drivers flashing me thinking that my full beams were on! The pano roof is nice, but if I were buying a 3008 (or indeed a 5008) I wouldn't spec it, because like you I'm tall and it does eat in to the headroom. The massage function is great isn't it? Who'd have thought you'd be able to get such a feature in a Peugeot SUV?! Thanks for watching Nick, I hope you enjoy the car. What engine did you go with?
@nickk6109
@nickk6109 6 лет назад
I went with the 1.6 BlueHDi-120 EAT6 - the slow one. I've got 4000 miles on the clock mainly long distance and this where it's most relaxing. MPG is ~47mpg which isn't stellar but acceptable. The 120bhp also suffers at top end on French roads going over 70mph where the engine needs a little more power as the 6 speed auto sits 6th gear and can't stay in the power band for continental 130kph cruising - taking the engine to ~330Nm would work well and adding a 7th gear. A remapping box exists that will take the engine to 354Nm, although I'll wait until after the warrantee has expired. However, given that it's low engine revs make long distance cruising the relaxing experience. The new model is 1.5 with a little more power and an EAT8 gearbox, so I suspect my points have been answered :D

Yeah, a friend of mine recently tested the 1.6 litre diesel and she said that it lacked a bit of guts.

I’ve just bought a 2019 GT premium just 2 days ago. It’s certainly comfortable and well built. The downsides I have noticed are the rear view reversing camera isn’t brilliant clarity which it should be and the mpg is nowhere near the manufactures claim. The govt should look into these mpg claims which are not indicative of everyone’s daily driving.

Tried this car out. Steering wheel is daft in a car like this, feels unsettling. Found the virtual cockpit display a bit tacky, certainly not clear and pleasant like the Audi version. Suspension too soft and it's a rolly polly car in the bends. The small petrol is okay but that gear change feel is not good. Looks not bad. No 4wd option is disappointing and don't expect that off-road button to compensate much. An okay town car but no action car and dynamically a let down.
