I think the theory here is that the tackle group this year is really deep and they can grab a quality starter at the top of the second. After Chase, Waddle, and Smith the receiver group takes a big dropoff. Not saying I necessarily agree with the strategy but if you can grab Chase or Pitts in the first and Jenkins or Radunz in the second why not?

No, you don't pass on what appears to be a generational LT. It is easier to get a WR through draft or FA than a special LT. There hasn't been a LT with this grade, upside since Tyron Smith. That was 11 years ago. How many elite WR have there been every year, they're much easier to find. What a Sewell pick would do to open the run game for Mixon and Co as well also needs to be taken into account. If they can get an extra 10-15 yds a game in run game it's a much better team. I also trust Boyd and Higgins and think a guy like Marshall will be there in second round, plus about 20 other receivers one or two of which will surprise and be a Claypool type steal. But you aren't getting a Sewell type in second rd or later, not a chance in hell.

Aside from all the GM’ing in the comments, I feel this was a really good exercise, good discussion and I enjoyed the back and forth about trying to “plug a hole” versus “pick the best player”. Another thing to remember is this is not a draft prediction video, this is playing out how these two would advise each time, and just seeing how the draft would play out in that way. There are always NFL teams with much much higher grades on players who will get taken much earlier than expected (Raiders have been notorious for this lately). As far as personal bias, I loved the Bengals talk, and i’m in the camp hoping that they take Chase, then either the pick of top interior linemen in the second, or if they prefer a tackle that they would have kick inside for his rookie year. If they go Tackle in the first round, there are good receivers or elite interior guys to choose from at the top of the second. They’ll do fine either way, but I would lean towards getting Burrow his guy.

When it comes to the Bengals both Sewell and Chase are fantastic players and it’s honestly a 50-50 on who you pick. The tie breaker for me comes down to the chemistry. I trust the chemistry of Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase than I do Sewell. And for rounds 2 and potentially 3 we address that interior O-Line.
@TJackson736
@TJackson736 3 года назад
Reilly Reiff can play RT, who the Bengals have no one at currently. OT is the most important position on the OL and GMs generally believe LT is the 3rd most important positional need (both offense and defense is counted here). The Bengals already have Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd, which is serviceable. Higgins is your #1 and the Bengals should get a better #2. #2 WR is not anywhere close to being as important as LT. The choice between Penei Sewell and not taking an OT is not between having an average LT or getting a good one. It is between having a good to great LT and an above average RT or poaching someone off a practice squad to start at RT and having an above average LT. RT is an absolute hole right now for the Bengals. Then Bengals have to play in the AFCN, which is stock full of great to good pass rushers. The Bengals simply cannot have a total void at RT. You simply cannot rely on someone falling in the 2nd or 3rd to get a good LT off the bat, but there are plenty of WRs to go around this and nearly every draft. There simply aren't enough great linemen like Sewell every draft, but WRs are plentious.

@El_Bukis
@El_Bukis 3 года назад
It's basically if you can't realistically fix the O-line anytime soon, then draft a receiver that can separate quickly. This allows Burrow to get rid of the ball faster, which helps relieve the problem of him getting pressured. Think like how Tom Brady makes any O-line look immediately better just because he can get the ball out faster than anyone else. A good receiver will help a young QB become comfortable with making those kinds of quick decisions, especially one that he already has chemistry with.

On Sewell v Chase? One bad O-line rep can end Joe Burrow's season as we literally saw last year. One bad route from a mediocre receiver leads to a turnover at WORST. There are also FAR more good to great WRs in the NFL than there are tackles. Plus, I'm more confident in a second round WR than I am a 2nd round tackle. If Joe Burrow hadn't been injured last season I might go Chase, but the fear of David Carr-ing Burrow is just too damn high to play any games.

I think it's the simple fact that when Fields gets pressured he really reacts poorly and posts a 22.6 passer rating in that situation. The rest of his game is solid but the NFL sees that and wonders how bad will this trait be when the pressure this guy will see in the NFL will be even faster AND there is better coverage. And for the record there are more than a few analysts/scouts calling Z.Wilson the next Johnny Manziel. Mac Jones is being called an out of shape dad bod QB who only looked good because of the team he's on. People are even questioning Lawrence. QBs are put under a microscope more than any other position and every year no matter who they are or where they come from, there will always be people who aren't convinced.
