I had these adverts on a video when I was a child. I would watch them over and over again for hours, especially if I was sick. I would make myself a bed on the dining room floor and watch them on the TV we had in there I love these adverts. When I need to smile I come find them
People cut themselves over everything these days. I used to laugh at Dad when he said the world isn't what it used to be...sadly Parents are almost always right.
Who remembers the mountain climbing one where they got hit by an avalanche, and one says "hold on Simon" " I'm OK, tents ruined " surely I never imagined that one
I remember some of these TV ads from years ago. However there is one missing which is the one where Shirley buys the pyramid shaped tea bags from PG Tips and after enjoying a nice cuppa Geoff says "Say Shirl, these pyramind bags make a Pharaoh cuppa, pyramid?, Pharaoh? Ha ha ha!" And Shirley cringes in embarrassment and puts her hands over her face.
Why cgi? The original chimps loved acting. Saw a documentary about the trainer and owner of the apes, he made the USA tv series Lancelot Link Secret Chimp before Pg Tips found him.
@@bubcentral23 It ultimately isn’t good for the chimp’s mental health to be put in a showbiz environment. Not to mention that once they get to around 8 years old they become too strong and aggressive to safely be around humans
I remember most of these as a kid rolling around with laughter very entertaining, but looking now and it makes me wonder how much manipulation and abuse these chimps had to endure 😢
John Rinder you can also hear the voices of Su Pollard and Caroline Quentin in these ads and apparently Miriam Margolyes as well, although I don't know which chimp Miriam voiced.
@Leeswinburn Pg tips with the chimps is my favourite adverts of all time and i miss it and they are absolutely fantastic and brilliant thanks for sharing this.
I have the fridge magnets with Geoff and Shirley. Those ads were the best on TV and we all enjoyed them. The monkeys had fun too despite the animal lefties here complaining.
We have PG Tipps tea here in the USA and it’s a very refreshing tea! The old ads with the chimps are quirky and cool. Way better than the sock monkey used in modern ads. The Ada and Dolly ads and Maternity Ward are my favorites
When I was a child I thought these were some sort of puppet or were performed by dwarves or little kids in monkey costumes. It was quite a shock when I found out they were real chimps.
Wasn't there a mountaineering themed one as well? Seem to remember a line something like "hey Jimmy, do you want some bags for your tent". "No thanks, we've already got 42!".
Was telling my 15yr old about these ads ... she couldn't believe they were real chimps, but loved the tongue in cheek comedy. (I also introduced her to "Carry On" films a few years ago.)👍🏻 We both said that updated CGI versions would be a great idea! Here's hoping 🤞🏻😊 (Using real chimps is definitely not an option now that we are aware of the fact it is neither good for nor kind to the animals.)
For those who are capable of rational perception and basic logic, the only real problem with Ad #1 is that the tune is only three notes away from being a commercial for "salt peanuts"! The golden era (so to speak) starts, in this comp, with Ad #3 - and then the highlights pour forth as if from a filled kettle...04:06 the Channel Tunnel, 05:00 the French grand pricks, 05:28 Mr Shifter (he said carefully), 05:56 the M.O.Tea, 06:28 Mr S Bend, 08:21 trouble with his trousers, 08:50 Robin Twickers, 09:49-11:26 aha, here we have "Kelvin's favorites", meaning "My name is Bond, Brooke Bond"; 13:10 the microwave, 14:07 Dogger Bank... But of course this isn't a complete collection - no sign of "Papa's got a brand new bag" (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NCLzBOMft_s.html), parents (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--FJwXXEqQ5Q.html); or the last one to mention Mr Bond aka "this machine's gone ape", plus two instalments of The Wapping Great Company...and some more.
15:49 I actually remember this one. I love how the music gets more discordant the more Shirley's interrupted. The moment she calls Simon, Samantha and Kevin only to say "Nothing!" is back in my head, rent tlfree
I remember that one too and thought Shirley sounded exactly like Caroline Quentin from men behaving badly. Now I know it's actually her as her voice is credited at the end of this video.
Tea Mr Shifter, do you know it's on my foot dad, you humm it ill play it son, classic, I always thought he said you hold it, the PC speaker must be a lot better than our Radio Rentals TV set 40 years ago,
Is this really a full set? I remember one from, around the late 70s/early 80s, where the chimps were climbing a mountain or skiing or something in Scotland and an avalanche wrecked their tent, so they had to buy a new one. I can still remember the "joke" at the end: "Ye'll be needin' a big bag for yon tent Jimmy?" "No thanks, we've got 72!"
In the advert where the chimp is playing the piano, The chimp was using a real piano in rehearsals, But in the video they used a fake piano for safety . Unfortunately because the piano was fake it made no sound so the chimp wouldn't play it. 😂
17:35, remember that one fondly because I assumed PG Tips referred to the classification but the classification didn’t occur until 1982 so I guess it must’ve stood for a name or so?
emmmaitch it's funny because it sounds like she is going to say "oh don't talk bollocks" LOL! That's the voice of Penelope Keith from the good life and to the manor born.
These ads were the first things that introduced me to this specific brand, I didn't think it would be available in America. But MAAAN do I feel bad for those chimps...
I remember one advert where a chimp was an Arab Sheikh in a petrol garage forecourt and he leans out of his car and says "I say, I seem to have run out of oil!"
Did you know that in order to get the chimps to move their mouths to mimic talking, they put peanut butter on the roof of their mouths so they'd be trying to lick it off and move their lips... Funny enough it's also the same way they filmed HollyOaks
