It is so sad ,however that is life ! If people will only realise that animals have deep feelings !We all are still mourning ,because two have passed away recently .A wonderful human and an adorable elephant !❤️

@@ls-l1518 Yes. Aside from her daughter, Klaserie and Sebakwe, she has been alone (until Phabeni chose her). They will likely be with her, but neither of them are mamas, so they cannot understand in the same way. She is alone in this video.
@@dowth3 I agree. Setombe always seems to have been suffering from a form of PTSD, presumably triggered by events in her previous life in Zimbabwe. From Adine's previous comments, Klaserie brought Setombe out of her shell, and I guess it will have to be Klaserie who will once again coax her back.

@@dowth3 Setombe is mourning the loss of her adopted son Phabeni. And since elephants exhibit such human characteristics , maybe she needs some alone time to process what has happened to her son. Phabeni used to suckle from her and followed her around, wherever she went. And now that is gone. I pray that God will comfort these gentle Giants, as only He can, through this mourning period.🙏❤️🐘🕊️❤️🙏
Thank you Owen for explaining how Setombe is right now. So very sad for her, when she had opened up for the first time to an orphan baby. Thank you everyone for supporting the HERD in their grief & I hope the human carers can feel all of our support. I agree that we NEED these updates, even though they are sad to watch. When a human looses a child, they spend hours going through albums & photo. They have a memory box to keep momentous. Grieving is a cruel but necessary process. 💔 💔 💔 Setombe hugs and love from all over the globe.

@@Itzkitchka They cited their considered opinion. It's shown in the video, and it makes good sense, though there is no perfect/painless decision here. The scent of Carers and Adine were on Phabeni's body, which the elies would've smelled and perhaps misconstrue that the carers and Adine are threats and that they actually hurt Phabeni. As horrible as it is for a mama to not have closure on what happened to her baby(!), it would impact HERD's ability to care for the entire herd --- including Setombe --- if the elies lost trust in them, not to mention the trauma that that could create. Hard decision for sure! 💔💚

Exactly. But who is supporting Setombe? She was not welcomed by the other mamas until Phabeni chose her. And at least in this video, no one is coming to her aid. I pray that changes ...
@@dowth3 She heard her baby scream before he died and she screamed in response. That broke my heart. All she knows is he disappeared. I wish they had been able to let her see him for closure, but I don't know elephants like they do. Maybe that would have been even worse for her. Poor Setombe. I know her heart is aching, and mine aches for her.

It is true, there is no greater pain than the loss of a baby. Having taken 5 years to heal from a miscarriage, I know that feeling only to well. Healing can often be a slow process for Humans so I can only imagine how Setombe, Adine, Khanysia and the rest of the herd will fare, not to mention the carers. I am still in disbelief and wish I could take away that pain they they must be feeling. It is one of the hardest to reconcile, and it just goes to show how something so small could make such an impression on all of us. Phabeni was like a walking love bomb, and nobody could resist his character, he was precious and unique. I will never forget him, none of us will......but what I have learned from this is that he brought so much love and joy to all of us just by his presence, there is a whole world out there of animals just like Phabeni that need a second chance, because of the actions of selfishness and greed. My wish is that some day, all animals will be treated with the respect that they deserve and protected better than they are now. Have a blessed day!

From the very start, Setombe claimed that little boy to be her own & she did a fantastic job at being his loving Mother. They say time heals, I don’t know how long that is for Elephants, but I hope her heart heals & she finds peace. ❤

Poor Setombe. Losing a baby is the most painful thing that can happen. I’m still feeling the loss of Phabeni too. I loved that little boy and it’s hard to comprehend and accept that a baby can die. It is counterintuitive, which makes the whole thing worse. Phabeni was Setombe’s own beloved baby and she is in grief. 😢😢😢❤❤

Setombe, beautiful girl, it's not your fault and we feel the loss with you. Phabeni was a special little guy and I know that he knew he was safe and he was loved. Huge hugs for mama. There will be another. I truly believe that elephants do their own version of a funeral procession.
I knew that Setombe would take losing her baby extremely hard. Hopefully the rest of the herd can help her recover from her grief. Secreting like she is doing looks as though she is crying tears . Seeing her face makes me start crying all over again just when I thought I was done weeping every day 😢.

I always thought that she looked proud, as well! I loved the video where they (it may've been Owen) highlighted the way that Phabeni's love of Setombe changed the dynamics of the herd females toward Setombe. Seems as though she's now lost that connection with them in addition to her baby 😢
I pray for this, because I don't think it will happen otherwise; Setombe's been a bit excluded from the mama club prior to Phabeni choosing her. Even in this video, she is alone. Poor dear!

Setombe has been alone in the herd (save for her daughter Klaserie, ans Sebakwe) but they are not mamas and won't know a mama's pain. Supporters (through donation, interest and prayers) and Carers with their vast wisdom and kindness, can support her, but so far it doesn't seem likely that Setombe will be supported by the other mamas 💔
@@dowth3 My hope and prayer us that after Setombe has had time to grieve in her solitary way, the other female moms will gather around her to lift her up. I believe they understand how big an adjustment this is for Setombe after opening her heart to a new baby orphan only to lose him. They're very loving and will be there for her.🐘🕊🦋💞🐦🇺🇸

The look in her eyes in the previous video is unmistakable and says it all. My heart aches for her. My late wife and I lost our daughter to a week 35 miscarriage. My wife spent her short life as a deeply compassionate powerful empath that consoled and treated abused children. I know she will do everything she can to console Setombe and the others at HERD, and she was one of the best ever. Our daughter has all her mother's gifts, and then some, and she will be welcoming Phabeni. He will still be in the very best of hands... Deepest love to Setombe and all at HERD

Agreed. I'm still crying for Phabeni, but my pain is NOTHING compared to his mama, Setombe's. Phabeni chose her and she was finally included because of that. Now she's grieving and alone 💔. I pray that she gets the TLC from humans and elephants she deserves.

It is so difficult to get the little elephants through their first two years. We all know that and is still so heartbreaking and difficult to deal within, especially for the carers. It IS heartbreaking... And Setombe needs support, so I'm relieved that she's getting some focus. Supporting and loving them means in the hard times too. Prayers for your own broken heart. If Setombe weren't so isolated in the herd, I wouldn't be as concerned for her. Of course I'm still crying over Phabeni (watching old videos of him helps me with this), but my pain is nothing like Setombe's. SHE was the mama he chose. She needs the focus and TLC for awhile, I believe, regardless of how painful it is to witness ❤. As a mama who's been bereaved, I know this is important for her to not feel isolated 💚🙏🏻

We mourn with her and with her elephant herd, and her human herd. The death of Phabeni has affected many thousands of people. Hopefully what is learned from his short life will be helpful for future orphaned elephant babies moving forward.

Really this is it. It happened. I was devastated with a other baby I foster 3 weeks ago. Phabeni in the same month just killed me. I think when we foster it feels very personal. However nothing can be more excruciating than what Adine must have experienced 😢 and the caretakers. The Herd. Peace is what we need to find eventually. All our analysis does not change what is done .❤

I feel so bad for Setombe. I just hope that she understands that precious little Phabeni has died. Owen expressed so beautifully and poignantly Setombe’s suffering. Thank you for sharing the footage and update on Setombe. Many humans do not realize that God's creatures do grieve in some manner for we are not the only intelligent species on the planet. Setombe will go through similar steps as humans do when grieving, as will the other herd members. One of my pet's passed 9 months ago, and my youngest rescue still looks for his big brother who first greeted him and taught him. There are days when he goes to 'big brothers' spots and just lays there. Sending many head/trunk rubs to Setombe and the herd family. And many hugs to the carers for I know your hearts are broken. Carers, please know your devotion, love, and commitment to the herd doesn't go unnoticed; all of you are special souls. Thank you for all you do 24/7/365-366 days a year. Same. I had one kitty who mourned for 4 heartbreaking months for his big brother he adored. It was gut wrenching. My concern for Setombe is that she's unassuming, and was more separate from the group of adult females. Perhaps underestimated as a mama --- until Phabeni chose her. I hope that she gets the companionship from the elies, and focus from the humans to support her, the poor thing!

I don't know what time 5 hours ago was in Western Australia, but I'm watching this at around 3am in NSW. I recall our previous interaction on the death of Phabeni. I feel so bad for Setombe, and although I have never lost a child, I do know those who have. Grief is a horrible thing! I wish for her to know that she is loved through this awful time! @@Playwright62 Ah ... well, bless you for your service to the animals! 💚 Some think that Setombe suffers from a bit of PTSD from her experiences in Zimbabwe, and she's been less a part of the adult females at HERD. Her daughter, Klaserie, and dominant bull Sebakwe are roomed together at the homestead. Wee Phabeni chose her as his mama, despite being led to Lundi at first. This changed the dynamics of the female herd. There's a great video on how Phabeni changed the dynamics. Only after being chosen by him did the other females rally around her. I say all this only to highlight my concern that she is isolated again -- only now it's while she's mourning, since Phabeni's passing💔. She is the focus of my prayers now. Welcome to the family! 💚
@dowth3 Thank you so much! At Phinda, I helped a wildlife scientist do his master's research on the contraception of female elephants, and he talked about ptsd of elephants who had been traumatized and how careful they need to be when they need to tranquilize them.
