Where there is Phantasy Star I am there!

Almost Christmas, small town nowhere, 1988. I was all of ten years old. I distinctly remember the feeling of joy I had when I found this in my parents closet, looking for my gifts while they were occupied. The permanent smile the week before Christmas should have been a dead giveaway that I had rummaged through my gifts. Christmas morning arrived... I was in a rush to get down to the console TV in the basement. My parent had already started the wood burning stove, and I plopped down on the couch after unhooking the Atari 7800, setting up the Master System, and slapping in the cartridge. I remember immediately being struck by how amazing the intro was. The art style, the quality of the graphics, starting off with your brother dying and leaving you his sword. And when I entered the first 3D dungeon, that music, that movement forward into what I was seeing... my mind was blown. To this day, I still play and prefer the original Master System version (yes, even over the FM version and Sega Ages remake). My favorite RPG of the 8-bit era. Music wise, the only thing that competes in my opinion is Falcom's Master System port of Y's, Vanished Omens or Golvellius, Valley of Doom. Overall, Phantasy Star wins, but The Morning Grow (thanks localization team!) is probably the most emotionally uplifting endgame music I remember from that time. Golvellius... the intro and password enter screen hooked me. Honorable mention to Kenseiden and Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap musically also. Way off track, loves me some Phantasy Star! I wish Sega would treat it right. It's a phantastic ip that deserves better games. ;)

Five years old, we rented this game and the entire family fell in love with it. We all took the day off when we figured out how to get the goddamn Roadpass. I remember being woken up past midnight because dad and mom were up and couldn't figure out how to navigate one of the later dungeons and I had somehow memorized their layouts. What a game.

After the intro cutscene, I knew I would be playing RPG's for the rest of my life.

Just completed it the first time the other day. My first JRPG ever was Phantasy Star II, which will forever stand atop the highest pedestal for me, because nothing can ever though that first, fresh experience, but I was not prepared for how how good the original still is. I was expecting to say that I wish I had played it back in the day, but it was honestly a complete and utter joy to experience now. And this music was a huge part of that.

I just bought a Nintendo switch because you can play phantasy star on it.

The FM chip provides far more tolerable sound effects, I don't think anybody can deny that, but there is a nostalgic charm to all of these songs that's just not there in the FM versions- even if the FM chip provides for more technologically impressive tracks.

My first system was an NES, and then a genesis, but somewhere in that timeframe my family would go to a family friend's house at least once a year, and the older kids had a master system set up with a bunch of games and I just remember being so excited to go over and play this the most

I couldn't afford this game as a kid, but I had other gems. Thanks to emulators on my retro console I discovered this game. I missed out so much. The music track on this game is DYNAMITE. Best RPG ever.

Pretty sure I saw this game being sold at Toys 'R' Us for $74.99... in 1989. That's almost $160 in 2020. No wonder I got Alex Kidd for Christmas instead!

The greatest adventure of all time.

I always thought the basic SMS sound chip had a superior quality to the enhanced FM version - at least where MUSIC was concerned. Same thing for the Famicom Disk System - the FM channel just seems to make the music muddier. Love how clear and crisp the music was done. Sure, some of the sound effects could be rough, but I don't know if the FM chip really improved those. These are all awesome trakcs.

I figured it out. Somewhere in "Vehicle" the track skips abruptly to Motavia, hence why all the times are wrong after that.

Experienced this game for the first time this month, It came out almost five years before I was born but damn I loved it so much, one day when I forget everything I want to try beating it without looking up anything at all. Though I think I’ll might still print out overworld maps to fill in town names and locations

Phantasy Star 1 was a pain to beat, but it was a good RPG for 1987, especially compared to the original FF in NES.
