I put as many different portrayals here as I could. If a certain actor doesn't appear here I either couldn't find or didn't have audio/video of them singing the song, or they didn't perform the role until after the video was published.

I feel like a lot of the understudies were better, lol. I wasn't watching the screen the whole time, I'd have it on something else, and multiple times when I was like "ooh that one is good, who's that??" I'd come on here to check, and, an understudy (It's like Phanception, Christine filling in for Carlotta only it's a Christine understudy actress filling in for Christine)

Rebecca Caine, Elisabeth Berg, Dale Kristien, Patti Cohenour, Grace Morgan Rebecca Luker, Claire Louise Hammacott, Maria KesselmanSierra Boggess, Lisa-Ann Wood, Katie Travis, are amongst the best quality. Oddly Brightman sounds a bit unsteady in comparison -but of course she created the role. Rebecca Caine seems to be the most compelling along with Elizabeth Berg.

I hate how people gush over Sierra Boggess just because she's the most famous one besides Sarah Brightman. I mean, she's good, and not the worst one here, but I certainly wouldn't call her the best. I find her voice, especially her vibratto on the high notes, somewhat tinny and shrill. She's often ever so slightly sharp on her high notes. A lot of these Christines do, especially if they go crazy on the buildup (which I hate, by the way). I like Christines with richer tones that make her more believable as an opera singer. Christines like Maria Kesselman, Emmi Christenssen and Mary Michael Patterson (who I saw on Broadway) are gorgeous, proper operatic sopranos that keep the song from sounding unpleasant and grating.

Well Christine is not supposed to be a fully trained opera singer and she is definitely not a mature singer because she's supposed to be 18 years old and still learning
@Silver54ful
@Silver54ful 5 лет назад
Anonymous- Yes it's true that in this production the performer who is hired as Christine should not sound like a legit opera singer because the score for her role was not written as precise operatic. Carlotta is the character that comes the closest to resembling an authentic opera soprano. None the less the actress chosen to play Christine still needs to have a beautiful light lyric tone. After all they even have a specific lyric in this show. "Mystified by sopranos' flight." And in the novel by Gaston Lerooux that inspired this musical has a passage describing her voice. But the primary word used came down to "seraphic" So when casting for this signature role. The lady chosen can not be purely untrained.
@jiancui3327
@jiancui3327 5 лет назад
I think she's got a beautifully powerful higher register and she's not afraid to use chest voice which I think is crucial for opera singing, which is also something modern opera singers don't show so in some ways she's better than some of the opera singers for this role. I think the main reason she's so popular is because she's one of the most exciting!!!
@Silver54ful
@Silver54ful 5 лет назад
MC Wyman- I'd recommend watching Lisa Vroman in this signature role. She has sublime classically trained voice and her acting choices are wonderful. She keeps the balance in her performance of modern emotions and period piece subtlety.

Thank you very much for taking the time to make this comparison video. Much appreciated to the max! First off, I have the utmost respect for all the ladies (those featured in this video and not) who are taking on this beautiful but taxing role. Both acting wise and vocally. No easy feat by any stretch of the imagination. Of course part of the appeal is the challenge of the character and score demands. These performers certainly prove the love for storytelling and musical theatre with their craft. Now before I share my favourites among this listing. I must say this. Sometimes it is the recording device that does not capture the true beauty of the performance. Other times, a vocalist sadly has an off day. (Every single singer who has ever lived had one at some point!) Then it can occasionally be both. So even if that is the case, I know based on previous experience in seeing or listening to these singers. They are incredible! I admire and am just as envious of their ability. So for those not featured in my list for this particular compilation. It is in no way a a bad reflection on their skill and passion in this role. Out of this video comparison my favourites are as follows chronologically. Maria Kesselman, Elizabeth Berg, Rebecca Luker, Rebecca Caine, Dale Kristien, Lisa Hull, Adrienne McEwan, Sylvia Rhyne, Jill Washington, Susan Facer, Els Bongers, Tracy Shayne, Bonnie Rapp, Elizabeth DeGrazia, Lori Zeglarski, Melissa Dye, Claudia Cota, Irrasema Terrazas, Deborah Ducther, Kathy Voytko, Claire Louise Hammacott, Viktoria Krantz, AJ Callagan, Katrina Murphy, Reneta Krassy, Emmy Rossum, Rebecca Pitcher, Susan Owen, Sarah Lawrence, Elizabeth Southard, Elizabeth Loyacano, Emiliee Lynn, Claire Doyle, Claire Lyon, Kristi Holden, Elizabeth Welch, Julia Udine, Grace Morgan, Monika Sommerova, Michaela Gemrotova, Harriet Jones, Tamara Kotova, Elena Bahtiiyarova, Talia del Val, Celinde Schoenmaker and Rachel Zatcoff. All a sensational cadenza!!! :)

Have to say, many of these are not only terrific performers but wonderful people who went on to other pursuits. I worked with something like 8 of these in the 1990s. Also ones not here: Caroline Schiller and Susan Sereda (both Toronto). Never got to work with Iren Bartok from the West End production, and I wish I had because we got to know each other later. Caine was/is the most amazing singer (the Canadian recording sounds just like she did every night), Glenda Balkan was one of the most reliable, and Sylvia Rhyne was effortlessly beautiful. Frankly, anyone who pulls off the demands of this role deserves admiration.

I absolutely adore Rebecca Caine as one of the best Christines ever to be played in this video, but she was pretty off tune with the cadenza in this version. But even if her notes were off, she still has the smoothest voice out of all the other females. This is just not the best version that you used. I saw other recordings and videos of her in Toronto though.

Thank you for compiling this video -- it's fascinating to see/hear how many women have sung Christine through the years. I relished hearing the young Rebecca Luker and Ms. Cusack, and I really appreciate the fuller-voiced Christines like Sierra (I am interested to learn if the Parisian production in French will alter the material besides translating it), Julia Udine, and Rachel Zatcoff, as well as the occasional interpolation of the high E-flat into the cadenza :)

I am very fond of Glenda Balkan. She was the 2nd Christine I heard after Rebecca Caine. But I loved the innocent, girlish charm she brought to the role. Every other one seems either too loud, too showy, or too embellished. But it is really neat to so many all together. They all are amazing and brought something to the role of Christine.

Why does Rebecca Caine's and Susan Cuthbert's cadenza seem the exact same as the other?
@EnzFab73
@EnzFab73 5 лет назад
I noticed that. I saw both in Toronto back in the 90's and both times I saw Cuthbert she always sang the other candenza- the one done by Brightman and she was nowhere near as compelling as Caine IMO, who was sublime. Rebecca Caine always sang the longer candenza that she is known for. Cuthbert interestingly enough also wore a blonde wig (Meg Giry wore a brunette wig). I doubt that cadenza was Cuthbert.

@mattmattei502
@mattmattei502 8 лет назад
+Silver54ful I've seen Lisa play the roll many times. My point was I was wondering why she was left out of the montage as she was the principal Christine in the SF run from 1993-1998 and Cristen Mortenssen was her alternate.
@PrismsofGlass
@PrismsofGlass 8 лет назад
I can't speak for why the uploader does not have Lisa Vroman, but for Cristin Mortensen, there are no audios recorded of her Christine that I know of, so she would likely not be in any montage (along with many other Christines who over the years have gone unrecorded).
@takakhan-z3w
@takakhan-z3w 8 лет назад
It's a shame Lisa isn't in the line-up as she's one of my most favorite Christines, due in large part to her masterful vocal command of the music; her voice truly makes you believe in the Phantom's obsession. Also, is it just me, or do the earlier actresses seem to have generally better trained voices than the later ones? It seems as though a majority of the contemporary actresses to play the role have more trilly, theater-pop voices rather than classically trained one. Far be it for me to know the vocal training of each and every actress who's done the part, but that's what comes across for me in a general sense.
@PrismsofGlass
@PrismsofGlass 8 лет назад
I definitely agree with you on Lisa Vroman - very well-trained, classical, full voice, splendid to hear. I would also agree that, in general, the trend for Christine voices tends to have become more musical theatre-like or even pop-like. There are definitely exceptions of course, but it is a bit sad to hear it when compare to the older Christines, who generally had stronger and more unique voices.

+Willa Edge Just my opinion. Andrew Loyd Webber said so himself. she's been in the Vegas spectacular production, she originated the role of Christine in love Never dies, been on broadway multiple times as Christine, and was asked to do the 25th anniversary DVD live performance by Andrew so...I think she's amazing ;)

Andrew has a habit of saying the newest young hot thing is the best and then backpedaling and dumping them when the next newest hot young thing comes along. He’s not a trustworthy source.

+MusicMan2013 Yet if you search for a different audio or video. They sound astonishing! Not all of these ladies were caught with great equipment. Or it could have been a lousy vocal day. The worst case scenario. It became both. So I hope this particular comparison video does not defy these performers as a whole. Not to mention several did perform in many other theatre roles, some have done opera, a few did their own cover albums while others have become concert recitalists. So much worth looking into as long as this video does not become the bubble of judgement. Many people would be surprised how wonderful they are. :)
