Danny's Domain I think it's the best way to test their skills to see if they are capable of tackling Elphaba. Because of Nessa's turnaround in the second act it's a great way to put their acting chops up to the test
Danny's Domain I think a lot of it has to do with hiring within. Not to mention that many have also covered/understudied Elphaba so they already know it
Initially, it was definitely the best way to test the standby actress. However, as time went on, Playing elphaba on Broadway became so demanding that they needed time off and needed a standby strictly dedicated to only covering that character.
Catherine Charlebois (15:57) is my ultimate favorite. God, I absolutely love the cast from that performance: Donna Vivino and Alli Mauzey never fail to amaze me 💕
Still bitter that this wasn't on the CD (yeah, spoilers, but still it's one of my favorite songs in the show. The part where she's singing while Elphie is chanting still gives me chills.
Shoshana Bean as a nessarose was a beautiful thing because you really got to see her true Range. Playing Elphaba 7 nights a week for 2 years was definitely hard on her voice.
Original Lyrics: Save him, please just save him, my poor Boq, my sweet, my brave him. I remember how he held me at the dance. And no matter what his crime, if I could, I'd turn back time! Is there a chance, Elphaba? With one of your chants?
The original was more about nessas love for boq, they changed it to focus on the relationship of the sisters and why boq is so important to nessas life.
Michelle Federer and Shoshana Bean. Surprisingly, they outlined the 2 sounds of nessa. The real belty evil witch vs the soft belt angry in love witch. The irony that Shoshana was one of the best Elphabas and Nessas. Chilling
I've seen Wicked two times and The Wicked Witch of The East is one of my favorite scores, and I'm upset that it's not on the soundtrack but I understand why it isnt. Deedee Magno Hall was probably my favorite one. She did amazing! Catherine Charlebois also did amazing!
All these actresses are amazing. Another Nessa actress who does a brilliant job with this song is the current West End Nessa, Rosa O'Reilly. Her voice in this song gave me chills. Nessa is one of the more underrated characters in Wicked, but I think she is one of the best characters in the whole show and one of my favourite characters.
Love some, of those early rare clips. Eden actually went on a fair number of times as Nessa. She performed as Nessa publicly months before debuting as Elphaba, and actually went on at Jennifer Laura Thompson's second show in July 2004 and her last day in the company (for the first time) in September 2004. I'm not a huge fan of Nessa as the character but I do,consider myself tremendously lucky to have seen both Eden Espinosa (twice) and Shsohana Bean in the role
Fun Fact did you know that Nessa’s black dress originally belonged to Glinda for Dr. Dillamond’s ‘Funeral’ scene? The scene was ultimately cut after the SF Tryout
DeeDee will always be my favorite Nessarose for a couple reasons. 1. Its DeeDee. Extremely talented 2. PORL Catherine Charlebois is pretty amazing too Also Michelle cus she’s the original and was so dedicated to the role
I saw Natalie Richardson as Nessarose in London back in July of 2009! She was my first Nessarose and she was amazing at the role! I didn’t meet her though. Emily Ferranti was my second and third Nessarose! She was great too and I got to meet her. She was so sweet!
i find it absolutely HILARIOUS how libby from sabrina the teenage witch (jenna leigh green) was calling sabrina a freak back in the 90's but now she's a witch LMAO the irony hurts
The only reason I'm watching this is so I can get a feel of how the other Nessarose actresses performed the part so I can embrace MY unique version of Nessarose, since I may be leaving in 2-3 years(once I'm officially professional) to audition for the "tragically beautiful" girl in the wheelchair.
A loooong time ago I downloaded this song on limewire. I wish I could find that version but I have no idea who sang it 😔 I’m 99% sure Idina was playing Elphaba though
I spent so long with the bootleg online of the show with catherine charlebois that when I did get to see wicked on west end while living in the uk, the nessa actress was a letdown and one of my favorite parts of the show felt anticlimactic
I saw Katie Rowley Jones back in 2014 (4 years ago!!! I feel so old) and it's strangely nostalgic to hear her singing Nessarose again. She was my favourite in the show and she's still one of my biggest inspirations
Heidi Kettenring was so amazing. I love how she rushed “each other” at the end like she was so overcome with emotion and exhaustion. It was the perfect denouement and I wish the song was written that way, to be honest.
@@vglegorreta Samantha Barks and Auli'i Cravahlo in the same movie? That is something I would love to see. They should cast Sam as Elphaba and Auli'i as Nessa in the upcoming Wicked movie that's supposedly coming out in December this year
VV L i would love that but its a dream of mine to see Anna Kendrick play Nessa i think her voice is good for it and i loved it when she started yelling at Jaime in the last five years so i think she would do great at this and Dancing through life
I love Natalie Anderson. She was my very first Nessa and I loved her. I absolutely loved her rendition of this song. Don't gt me wrong, all of these Nessa actresses are amazing in their own way but I have a particular soft spot for Natalie Anderson and Catherine Charlebois as they were my first West End and Broadway Nessas respectively.
After really thinking about it here are my favorites (in no particular order) Arielle Jacobs Nicole Radesching (almost made me cry) Jennifer Waldman Philippa Buxton Carina Gillespie Lillie Flynn Theano Makariou Maike Switzer (mindblowing, how was she only an understudy!!?) Eden Espinosa Jenna Leigh Green (HER VOCALS OMG) Michelle Federer Yamamoto Takae (not the best vocally in my opinion but her astounding acting makes up for it) Shoshana Bean Gemma Atkins Cassie Compton (she was the first Nessa I ever watched so I have a soft spot for her) Marcie Dodd (made me actually shed a tear) Janine Tippl Jenny Florkowski Lauren Haughton Stevie Tate-Bauer (her acting is A+) Christanne de Brujin Jillian Kates Natasha Ferguson Jamie Rosenstein (took some time to get used to but now I really like her)
I loved Nicole Radeschnig and Arielle Jacobs too. They're so amazing. After watching this video, I'm having a hard time picking my favourite out of all of them.
After watching this video several times, I only just noticed that out of all the German actresses who portrayed Nessa, in the live recordings, the only person's face you see clearly is Theano Makariou. All the others are either just the audios, or their faces are obscured by the stage lighting.
I am trying to find the actress who played Nessarose Idk what year but Katie Rose Clark was Galinda and Donna Vivino (I can't spell sorry!!) As Elphie that cast was exceptional and I loved Nessa and want to learn the scene maybe, even though I can't sing lol
Does anyone have the clip of Stefanie Brown doing this song it used to be on an old comparison of this song but think its now been deleted. if anyone has it, would be awesome she is tremendous at the part she did the national tour in 2010 I think.
Did anyone else notice that Stevie Tate-Bauer's one sounded exactly like Cassie Compton. I had to listen to it several times before I realised. If you listen carefully to Stevie's one, and then Cassie's one, you'll notice that the voice and the riffs are exactly the same. It might just be me but I think they used the same recording twice for those two actresses.
They did actually sound similar, I think that maybe Stevie was directed to sing like Cassie because I can hear some differences in their voices. But it might be like you said that in both clips it's Cassie, guess we'll probably never know
Well, I do know that Stevie was Cassie's understudy. But I have heard clips of Stevie singing and it didn't sound like the clip in the video. I've seen Cassie live and she sounded exactly like that. But you are right when you say they sound similar. But I am leaning slightly more to it being the same clip of Cassie twice. But hey, it is simply a matter of opinion.
I haven't listened to this composition in years, but I actually remembered 17 minutes some seconds in, ends abour 18 minutes with Zarah mayher? she is the bestest of the best! true story
Wow Marci Dodd is almost as good as Michelle Federer.. And I had no idea Ariel Jacobs (23:40) played Nessa as well...! I love her, she's perfect for the role.
