Yup. He managed to take down a Bf 109 while his P-38 Lightning was about to fall when he dropped his external fuel tanks and forgot to switch to the main fuel tanks; and managed to recover his aircraft from a dive when he tried to rescue a P-51 Mustang from the 109s.

Kills-Losses-Loss by AA Vietnam War (US Navy) 40-7 Vietnam War (USMC) 3-1 Vietnam War (USAF) 108-33 when you bring in the SAM sites the picture is more vietnamese Vietnam War (US Navy) 40-7-66 Vietnam War (USMC) 3-1-74 Vietnam War (USAF) 108-33-337 i just thought it was interesting to point that out to show how deadly SAM sites could be with careful planning that the soviets did for the vietnamese in placing them. something similar happened in other wars of the time like the 1973 and Iran-Iraq. Iran-Iraq War (Iran) 68-29-33 Yom Kippur War (Israel) 55-28-22 the performance of the Vietnamese AA crews of course eclipses the incapable arabs which had doubted their soviet teachers many times and acted mostly out of order launching at max distance, while in Vietnam; the crews waited sometimes for the plane to fly over them so they could launch at their belly/tail and take them out without them even knowing a missile was coming(RWR--radar warning reciever has a blind spot below so the lock would go completely undetected)

Yes. I remember one episode of Dogfights where Lt. Col Robin Olds tell his dogfight experiences. He was an Ace during WW2 - flying a P-38 Lightning (Scat III) and P-51 Mustang (Scat VII), and in the Vietnam War in his F-4 Phantom II.
