More or less the giving of the jewelry/hairpins is a sign of favor/protection, Lady G and Jishin are both saying "if anyone touches you, they have to deal with me now"

@ultimatebishoujo29 Basically. A girl receiving a hairpin from somebody means that the person who gave them that hairpin finds them either attractive or owes them something. Like Lady Lihua who gave her a hairpin, this means that she owes her a big one for saving her life and sees her as someone she should look over from any harm. Same case for Lady Go. Meanwhile, Jinshi's intention of giving her a hairpin was because he finds her attractive.

Maomao was trying to eat the mushrooms herself and unwilling to share, the only reason she's sharing with the quack doctor is that he has both the place and cooking utensil, and is alone so there's no other to share. Jinshi knows though, so he's asking for the mushrooms as well, and he's asking them to be cooked a certain way.

First Lady Gyokuyou gave all her lady-in-waiting accessories to mark them as belonging to her, so others would not bother them. Then comes in Jinshi and gives Maomao his hairpin, thus stacking a claim on Maomao. To that Lady Gyokuyou commented that Maomao broke her promise and now she had to share her with Jinshi. In ep6 it will be revealed that the hairpins have other meanings also, depending on who it comes from. As shown in this episode, Maomao has no idea about this tradition and so, does not understand the meaning behind those hairpins.

So, what Maomao fed Xiaolan was a set of dishes called Dim Sum (or, Dian Xing), actually translates roughly to "snacks". From left to right, Bao (4x), Siew Mai / Shao Mai (8x), Wo Tie / Jiao Zi (potstickers / dumplings x9). These are typically laid out and steamed in a bamboo basket, which will then be served. Also, its reasonable that Maomao and the Quack are friends. Maomao gets to use the Quack's clinic and the Quack is literally having his own job saved by her.

4:09 Matsutake As seen in "Tensura", Matsutake. It is cooked in a very different way, but it is like an Asian version of a fine truffle. To the Japanese, the smell is considered good, but outside of Japan it is sometimes considered unpleasant. As mentioned above, they are a luxury foodstuff whose aroma is considered very good by the Japanese, and being quite rare, the girls tried to eat them so as not to be discovered by anyone they knew. A matsutake from Japan would generally cost around $100 per one. In fact, the aroma is anyway nice, but the taste is not worth the price. Jinshi commissioned Maomao to create "Dobinmushi(teapot-steamed)," a steamed dish made with a teapot, called a "dobin" in Japan, as the vessel, inside of which is steamed soup and ingredients such as matsutake, hamo(Daggertooth pike conger), mitsuba(Cryptotaenia japonica), etc. are added. It is sometimes served at high-class restaurants and ryokan (Japanese-style inns), but it is not often served in ordinary households, partly because of the use of dobin. This suggests that Jinshi grew up in a fairly wealthy family. 4:17 Baozi, Shumai, and Jiaozi As already mentioned in the comments, from left to right, I think they are Baozi(Manjū in Japan), Shumai, and Jiaozi (Gyōza in Japan). 【Baozi】 In Japan, baozi is commonly served with ingredients inside, but in China, steamed bread called mantou, which does not contain any ingredients, is also common. Mantou is said to have originated when Zhuge Liang, who was trying to change the custom of throwing in human heads as sacrifices to quell the flooding of a river at the time, successfully quelled the flooding of the river by using a flour paste as a head instead of a head. The name Mantou has two typical origins. The first is "蛮頭(mántóu)," where "蛮(mán)" refers to a different ethnic group and "頭(tóu)" means head. In other words, it means the head of a different tribe. The other is "瞞頭(mántóu)," where "瞞(mán)" means deception and "頭(tóu)" also means head. In other words, the name was originally derived from the idea of tricking a god into believing that it was a real head. Nowadays, the kanji has changed and it is written "饅頭", but the pronunciation is the same. 【Jiaozi】 Jiaozi is usually boiled in China, but in Japan it is usually baked. Jiaozi is also steamed, as shown in the anime, but this is a minority in both countries. In China, gyoza is generally eaten as one of the staple foods, while in Japan it is classified as a side dish. For this reason, Chinese people feel that when they see Japanese people eating rice with gyoza as a side dish, they do not understand the meaning. Incidentally, noodles are also one of the staple foods in some regions, so I have been told by Chinese who came to Japan that the Japanese style of serving ramen with rice and gyoza is completely crazy, LOL.

Something to understand, and the show Raven in the Inner Palace explains it well, the eunuchs would also suffer the same fate as the girls, even worse because they would be even easier to abuse by their superiors. Jinshe understands Maomao's fears very well.
@Gilhelmi
@Gilhelmi 8 месяцев назад
That makes sense. Concubines could still give birth to children, which is critical to maintaining the population of the city and nation. Even as commoner prostitutes, they still have some minor value. Eunuchs are worthless really. They cannot produce offspring and are only useful in working with the concubines and royal women. We can cut off another man's balls if we need more, who cares about this one. Only possible exceptions is the most highly ranked Eunuchs.... but they are in the Royal Palace, not babysitting the concubines who are not even married to the Emperor.
@jakeDgirl
@jakeDgirl 9 месяцев назад
Although this series is an alternate history, and is a bit loose in science... the fact that Jinshi has that much muscles could add to the theory that he's not really a eunuch. Neutered men have difficulty maintaining muscle mass. Another factor that adds to the theory that Jinshi's status is higher than it seems: When Maomao said that it's not a eunuch like Jinshi's fault that she got kidnapped nor was it his responsibility to police the common populace, Jinshi still insisted on apologizing, which is kind of an admission that maybe he DOES have responsibility that would affect civilians outside the palace.

@@vegassincity702 Spoilers: Yup, but i'm not gonna go around spoiling it for everyone. I'm updated in the manga, but haven't read the updates of the Light Novel (eng translation) in a long time, but yes, Jinshi is royalty. But his parentage is more complicated than it seems. I'm pretty sure his mom is Concubine Ah Duo, but I forgot if his dad is the previous emperor or the current emperor. I know one of the conspiracy theories later in the story is that Jinshi isn't really the current emperor's brother, but actually his son; that the current emperor is pushing Jinshi into the rear palace, posing as a eunuch, to remove Jinshi from the spotlight and from danger. That's why in ep 6, there's a 2nd cover story for Jinshi: that the emperor's "younger brother" is always sick and doesn't go out in public often. Jinshi's not a eunuch either. Right now in the anime, Maomao theorizes that Jinshi's lying about his status, but she hasn't suspected that Jinshi's also lying about his man parts. How she figured it out was my favorite part of the manga. I think there was an incident about a tea that can sterilize a man. I think Maomao tricked him with drinking a simple tea, then when she told him it's the sterilizing tea, Jinshi got mad. Maomao's like: "Why are you mad? It won't matter because you're a eunuch right? Anyway, that's a lie too. That wasn't a sterilizing tea." Maomao thought Jinshi would revert back to his goofy self, but Jinshi remained mad at Maomao for the 1st time. Because 1) she dared to play dangerous games with him; Maomao treated him like a puzzle to be solved instead of a friend 2) now that Maomao confirmed that he's not a eunuch, she discovered a royal secret that could get her in serious danger. At this point in the story, Maomao had let her walls down around Jinshi and they were really becoming friends. So this was the 1st time that Maomao's intelligence backfired and may cost her a friend.

@@vegassincity702He is most definitely royalty. I don't want to say that he's the emperor's brother though. He could be a marquis, probably tasked with making sure that things like the kidnapping never take place, but was not diligent enough in his duties and so Moamoa is kind of a reminder of his failure. I think it would be kind of funny if she got kidnapped again though. The kidnappers bring her right back to the rear palace but only this time she has hair pins and connections so she can get the guys arrested, that's what I want to see next. 😂

Really? To say that matsutake mushrooms are sometimes given as a gift is true, but it is only one of many gifts, and giving mushrooms is not meaningful in itself. And it seems to me that food-based gifts are mainly meat, fruit, or confections. > a subtle hint towards Maomao This may indeed be true.

if am not mistaken matsutake mushrooms used to be really expensive. The meaning of the hairpin is him saying "hey I'm courting you now. We dating". So it's also used as a way for other men to leave her alone as she is "enaged". Maomao doesn't know what it means, and I'm sure it's going to lead to a lot of funny misunderstandings. But yea after a quick google search its a old traditional way for people to get together in ancient china. Im unsure if its still used today or not

A little historical note: At the end of the sparring scene, Jinshi mentions that Gaoshun carries the blood of the Ma clan. The Ma clan were a family of great warriors, military leaders, and regional governors during the Three Kingdoms era of ancient China (189-280). Their land was mainly in North Western China and several of their warriors joined Liu Bei's forces. They are represented in multiple video game series such as Dynasty Warriors and Romance of the Three Kingdoms as well as Luo Guanzhong's historic novelization of the Three Kingdoms era written in the 1500s, though these sources all show a more romanticized version of the characters rather than their true historical nature. Key figures to look up if you are curious: Ma Teng, Ma Chao, Ma Dai Not pharmaceutical related, but a nice little historical nod that I enjoyed seeing as a fan of that era of Chinese history.

Perceptive reaction! Glad you're enjoying the series! Somewhere else, someone commented that part of the reason Jinshi gave her the hairpin was because she basically just told him she was going to go out in public without her safety net (freckles), and the last time that happened she got kidnapped. It is possible he caught that and gave her instead his protection (the man's hairpin would signify to other men that someone else had already approached her and she accepted and discourage them).

The idea behind the tablets with different burning colors most likely points towards something similar to invisible ink. Meaning, using ink mixed with different elements you can write messages that might seem inconspicuous to a regular person, but under the right trigger will reveal the true message. So a tablet might say: 1 lb of potatoes, 1 lb of carrots. But under a certain temperature it might say: All preparations are ready. And so on. Like the color change hotwheels cars and such.

There are many elements to watch this time. I'm very busy. The way to eat Matsutake mushrooms seems to be Japanese. The scent is too unique, so Chinese people may not like it, and they may not eat it the way it is in the anime. Four high-ranking concubines was a system used in the Tang and Song dynasties. It's interesting to be able to feel the era in which it was referenced. In the previous story, there was a description of what Fuyou means. Considering this in addition, we can infer that it was the Tang Dynasty. And Maomao is cute! But I guess it's just this time. That's also good.

They may have it in Asian grocery stores here in the US if you can find it. You can grill it, like in the anime, or you can put it in a frying pan and cook it til it's soft and lightly browned. (But these mushrooms don't really look like matsutake to me, they look like king oyster mushrooms; which you can sometimes find on the menu of Korean bbq restaurants if you want to try those.
