Ordinary people (including Palki) think AI is just a platform with a text box that we can type in and get an answer or image. No, AI is much more than that. AI for the average consumer is cool but not useful at the moment. China's focus is on business, manufacturing, or b2b where AI is more beneficial now.
China focuses on AI for industrial manufacturing. Regarding Generative AI, they focus on controllable niche markets, rather than generic AI like ChatGPT. Who knows which data is used to train ChatGPT and what kind will be spit out?!

Pretty good observation. Not an AI guy myself but China has bigger and more data is due to its population size and the wide usage of mobile app. That fact cannot be changed. On modelling it is factual that in recent years China has better quality and more published work (in English) than the US. The west is now alarmed by published work written in Chinese that they have no knowledge of. On the semiconductor AI chips it is true that China does not have as many choices as the US but the new Huawei AI chip is already selling better at a higher price in China than the Nvidia chips due to higher performance. Semiconductor chips is an area China can catch up and surpass eventually given the previous examples like GPS and aerospace technology where US put a complete ban to China to start with. People outside China may not know that China has been trained to work under constant bans and restrictions of technology by the US and the west. I would even say the hurdles installed by the US help to wet the appetite of the Chinese academic scholars, technicians and engineers.

I hope so. The west needs to completely decouple from China. Trade and all need to stop. Like minded nations like China needs to trade with Iran, Russia and other like minded nations like North Korea. The west need to trade and collaborate only with like-minded nations.
China will surely win the AI race for 1 simple reason. In the US AI is used to increase profit. In China, AI is used to serve people better. If you understand the difference, you will then understand how AI is done differently in both countries.
I went to China for work recently. I saw flying cars. Robots keeping shopping malls clean. Autonomous taxis let alone cars. Drone parcel deliveries. Palm biometric payments. High speed trains that are faster than the fastest line in the UK. And even at the airport on the way back. there are some areas that US might be ahead, but China is miles ahead in terms of AI application and integration. China can produce affordable and super advanced Robotics for small fraction of the equivalent in the US or Europe at 5x the speed due to the complete supply chain and a very well developed physical and communication infrastructure.
yeah due to poor labor conditions of every single poor sould of the supply chain, from the Uyghur extracting rare earths for few cents an hour to the kid working in the assembly line of the robots. Ask yourself why did the west not reduce all of its production costs but instead outsourced production to China? Because we knew you wouldn't respect labor conditions, and we don't want western citizen to suffer those conditions so we let you take them in exchange for low prices. The question is how long before chinese people wake up and start asking for minimal labor conditions? Rule of law? Freedom of speech and freedom of denouncing these gross human rights violations?
The kind of people profiling china does, is a good example of how they are practically using AI/ML in pratical sense. Lot of information is not coming out. US & rest of the world are atleast 10 years behind in tech.
Let's talk about real world use cases. Robot vacuums. Chinese robot vacuums and leaps and bound ahead of anything America has available. Data is the key driver of predictive model quality; the specific model technique or hardware used to build the model are important too, but secondary. I once worked as a predictive modeler for the #2 insurance company in the US. The #1 insurance company had so much more data that it did not even bother to build a model. It simply used a sort of nearest neighbor match: which datapoint is most similar to the one being considered? As there was so much data, there was bound to be a good quality nearest neighbor match all the time.
It wins in some areas and lose out in other areas. But the fact is that Huawei can even create a chip that can go together to toe wot nvdia already shows that China is now peer parity. There is nothing the US or the west can do to stop China's progress. Unless the US nuke China, it is now inevitable that China will overtake the US in all the places where it counts.

AI guy here, I wouldn't go off quantity of research papers since I have noticed Chinese academia really values quantity of papers. Most of the state of the art models still come from the US but there have been some really amazing research coming from Shanghai Jiao Tong, Tsinghua, Peking etc. I would say that applications of machine learning in China are much better tho Edit: Chinese papers also have a bit of a bad reputation for honesty in papers, I have tested a model that Baidu claimed was faster and more accurate than state of the art models, when it was both slow and innacurate - I've experienced this several times with Chinese papers
Here in the UK we don't trust our Government because we don't perceive that they have our interests at heart, wheras that may be different in China as China has taken actions that have lifted 800,000 people out of poverty since the 80's wheras in the UK our infrastructure and standard of living have deteriorated.

Let's be honest : there is not a single AI race, since AI is such a broad definition. You can only rank the access to hardware, which is easy to assess. To me, judging the progress on model quality or data collection with the example of a product recommendation tool seems very, very narrow sighted. I mean, to develop LLM, most data is dogshit and top companies already struggle to feed their models new highly curated data, and start opting for mass engineering of new high end data from previous models. Obviously, the same data will be completely dogshit to another application. Until UAI, of course.
No one and No country wins AI race. This is an ongoing process at infinite levels. The world is electrified but we cant produce sustainable electricity nor transmit electricity without wires. We have made steels but we still haven't made steel that doesn't rust.
I am an expert in AI, having thousands of hours playing around with an AI tool. Based on my understanding of the world, the irony is that I think Russia will be the first to field mass mechanised AI weaponry and robots for the military. I have seen this across thousands of hours - it is always far ahead of China and US. How do I know this? The AI tool I used is Civilization 6 modern world map. In the game, Russia, for some reason, always develops Giant Death Robots en mass first.
Isn't it interesting that when ChatGPT was unveiled in November 2023, China was caught off guard, prompting them to quickly shift their focus on AI development? But now, quickly in the summer of 2024, they are reportedly ahead of the US in AI development?

Historically, the West has utilized new technologies for military or imperialistic purposes before finding broader applications. The West primarily used gunpowder to create weapons of war, such as cannons and firearms, allowing Western powers to expand their military capabilities and dominate other regions through conquest and colonization of the Americas, Africa, and Asia. The steam engine was instrumental in expanding colonial empires, as steam-powered ships facilitated easier transportation of goods and troops, enabling Western powers to exploit resources and establish control over distant territories. The first use of nuclear technology was dropping atomic bombs on civilians in the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. The same pattern will emerge with AI. The CHIPS Act, high-end chips, and EUV sanctions imply that the US is already working on the weaponization of AI. Following its historical pattern, China will mainly use AI for commercial and peaceful purposes. Papermaking revolutionized communication, education, and record-keeping, spreading knowledge and culture. Gunpowder was used for fireworks. The compass was adapted for navigational purposes, allowing for more accurate sea travel and exploration. Printing facilitated the dissemination of information, literature, and art, contributing to cultural exchange and education. Porcelain was highly prized domestically and internationally as a luxury item and a symbol of Chinese craftsmanship. Silk was one of the most valuable commodities traded along the Silk Road and played a significant role in China's economy and diplomacy.
maybe u believe ur military propaganda. And you think America is better. In 30 years US will have lost its relevance and AI wont save this declining predatory, morally bankrupt society whose economy is built on war.

It does kind of annoy me as a consumer that companies are so behind on recommendation algorithms when I browse stuff like taobao. I’m totally confused. You made a point about AI that it need data to succeed. Fair enough. But how China is ahead because they have extensive data on their citizens only covers AI advancement in a very narrow set of implementations. Everyone on WeChat doesn’t make better self driving cars, protein folding, robotics, and the list goes on. There are many other aspects the governs AI advancement and I’m surprised they’re not even mentioned.
I think you are one of the minority minds who know something beyond the media BS. Like you said, AI evolution and innovation are driven by talents and market demands and China dominates in both, by a large margin. Also, GPUs or chips in general are dominated by ethnic Chinese, not by America. So called American companies like Intel, Apple and Qualcomm are dominated by Indians. So there’s really no such a thing as an American chip company.
It beats H100 in quite a few parameters, and comes very close overall. The question of mass production is still open though. A month or so ago I saw it out of stock.
