I never tire of watching people react to this iconic Phil Collins video. Dude is a BEAST - singer, songwriter, musician- just ultra talented. Phil Collins is an international treasure! Great reaction, guys!
Yep, its crazy considering he drummed with Genesis from 1971 to 2007. AND with jazz fusion band Brand X! Some of the greatest Progressive Rock and jazz fusion drumming ever. He's up there with Bruford as the greatest drummer of the last half century. A shame he can no longer drum.
@florencemiller7826 Bonzo was a great drummer no doubt, but unfortunately only had 10 years with Zep. And Collins and Bruford played complex various time signatures in Progressive Rock and Jazz fusion bands. Their jazz chops sets them in a class by themselves, over Carl Palmer, Neil Peart, Keith Moon and Bonzo.
You’re not an old fart….. Im not even half a century old and appreciated REAL music….. way too young to pop my moms Joplin, Zeppelin, Hendrix …The Who.. vinyls Lars Ulrich states something interesting upon collaborating with the SF Symphony Orchestra…….”If you think about it, music is all based upon metal…. Horns… violins……etc” I do feel drummers are underrated….. except for The Professor
This whole build up is like the calm before the storm. Absolutely amazing. Also, people rarely mention this, but the whole crew is effing killing it, everything is so perfect.
Absolute heartbreaking. He can't sing anymore. He can't play the drums anymore. I hope he can just have a rest and know that he brought the world so much incredible music, I think of so many times I saw him live in concert and it was some of the best times I ever had.
If anyone can hear this song and not be "moved" then you must be dead! This song is iconic and never fails to give me goosebumps 🎉❤❤❤. Phil is a legend 🌟❤️❤️❤️
You are obviously not a drummer otherwise you would know that the SNARE drum sits between the drummers thighs. For a left handed drummer, what sits to the right would be the hihat cymbals, but this song doesn't demand them so they are not there.
I don’t believe it, because I know it’s not true. Phil NEVER played ITAT as the first song of a set list, just like never played it as the last song. This videos is from The First Final Farewell Tour, but you can check the set lists of any other tour, it’s exactly like I say.
This is the most animated I've seen you two. Usually, you're very understated and "professional" (not "fan-like"). THIS brought out the "ticket-buyer" in you. You paid for it and got yer monies worth. The paper throw was the "coda" for me. Well done.
I love the rush everybody gets when that beat finally drops. It's a pretty triumphant feeling. A testament to the showmanship, but also the pure genius songwriting.
You can't get that much rush without that much buildup. And for a buildup this long you have to make it interesting enough, so that people stay and listen - not easy. Masterclass in songwriting.
Iconic early 80's, this is an epic song, on par with literally anything! This is the best version of this song live ever recorded (in my humble opinion).
I just don’t agree. It may be the best video recording due to it being the last pro-shot performance, but his voice, even then, nearly 20 years ago, wasn’t near was it was at his peak in the 80’s, and that really elevates those earlier performances, even if the video isn’t as clear. But this seems to be the go to for RU-vid reactions.
@@michaelfried3123 Well, people like this version. I've never really seen anybody actually compare it to the 80's performances. Nobody ever reacts to those so who knows if a lot of people have ever actually seen them. It's like, yeah this is the greatest performance they've seen....and the only one. Go on the comments of those older videos and you'll probably see all the comments say that particular one is the greatest.
@@michaelvielhaber9342 I tend to prefer sound quality over a time period closer to when the music was created. I'm 54, live music has come a long way since I was young, especially on the recording quality of it.
@@michaelvielhaber9342 His voice is spot on. Timing and Pitch Perfect. PLUS, he is playing and singing. On the recordings he usually adds the vocals in a voice-over.
That was a GREAT reaction. Have you ever been more animated on any other song you’ve reacted to? I don’t believe so. A classic drop, one of the best ever. Glad you went back and did the live version. Shout out to Lee Sklar, the dude with the beard, on bass. One of the best ever. That was 🔥 gentlemen, pure, unadulterated 🔥
Good to see someone recognized one of the best bassists in the music industry. Leland Sklar has played with some of the best in the business and has appeared in over 2000 recordings. Still around today at 76 years old, what a legend.
Goosebumps still. Watched it literally hundreds of times. Been a Phil fan since Genesis arrived while I was in Jr High. He is such a fun guy. Watch I Can’t Dance by Genesis. Too much fun! I love you guys. All about the music! 😎☮️❤️
A lot of people hate that 'Dance' song, but you are right, the official video is SO well done. Actually, all the Collins era videos are spectacular. I especially like 'Mama' and the one with Eric Clapton 'I Wish It Would Rain Down'. The video is clever with so many little details and references to Hollywood. Plus, the band really hams it up on acoustic while the music is electric. Eric deadpans like a pro as he waves his guitar around like a rock star. Very tongue-in-cheek. Phil has a great sense of humor (to add to his sense of drama).
THE greatest drum drop of all time from possibly the most accomplished singer, drummer, pianist, singer and songwriter of all time. A man whose dedication to drumming broke his back and health. And can we just recognise Leland Sklar playing his superb bass foundation to this classic.
This song IS the 1980's it defines the generation. The ultimate drum break. Phil was one of the most prolific performers of the era. We will not see his like again. Great to see his legacy continues. This was the start to the second part of the concert.
Chester Thomson was the other drummer. Him and Phil could double up on some Genesis instrumental sections when Chester toured with them. Now that was amazing. Saw Phil in ‘76.
Huge concert, and I read he was 52 years old when this took place …… He sang his heart out, and I can’t believe the way he sang it and beating on those drums also !!!! Can’t be an easy thing to do !!!! I LOVE THIS, I have to listen often!!!! I’m so glad u guys got to see this😘💥
I am so impressed with your channel. You listen to your viewers and don't waste any time in meeting their suggestions and requests. This is such an iconic song but this live performance takes it to a whole new level - gives me the chills it is so good. Love your reaction guys - keep it up!🧡
I am old enough to remember when they played it on the tv show "Miami Vice" I watched that and it was during a heavy moment in the series and fit it perfectly, true showman, the GOAT of all drummers!
Every time I see this clip, I wish I had seen him live. I was going to a lot of concerts in those days, not sure why I missed him. Great reaction, guys. Fantastic.
Phil is left handed so his kit is setup accordingly! It always blows me away, how he can play in perfect unison with Chester Thompson (a master in his own right) while singing! Serious talent.
And Chester is right handed, so their drum kits are essentially mirror images. I saw Phil and Chester dual drum at 10 Genesis shows and 4 Phil solo band shows. 14 iconic drum duets, countless instrumental drumming in tandem. I treasure every one.
@@kbrewski1 And in every performance that I've seen them drumming together, they both look like they wouldn't want to be anywhere else, and they're absolutely having the time of their lives!!! Love it!
Absoultely amazing! Phil Collins voice is sensational as his drumming. He used to be with Genesis earlier, playing drums, & Peter Gabriel was lead singer at the time. Naturally later on he had his own band just called simply Phil Collins but sensational!!!!!!!!! xx
GREAT REACTION GUYS!! This is the best live version out there , audio and video quality wise. Its from 2004 in Paris. The buildup, the anticipation and the TIMING OF HIS WALK HAS TO BE PERFECT. He's done that song at every solo concert since 1982, so he has that slow walk timed PERFECTLY for the huge drum fill! Its a master class in staging and performance. And yes, those were always real drums on this song, using a GATED REVERB EFFECT, that Collins himself developed while drumming on his ex Genesis band mate and prior lead singer Peter Gabriel's song INTRUDER from his Melt album. The gated reverb is a way of increasing and prolonging the amount of echo reverb via compression you get on the drums, the "gate" controls the time of the sustained echo. The idea is to make those drums sound even louder and "bigger" sounding. Peter wanted that sound with no cymbals for a eerie creepy drum sound for INTRUDER. So that is the 1st song to use this Gated Reverb Effect, 1980. Phil liked what he came up with so he used it on this 1981 iconic In the Air Tonight which defines this heavy drum sound in the 80s. I would LOVE it if you guys could react to Gabriel's INTRUDER, (not a video), it's one of his best songs and you'll love it. Also, other great songs with this signature Collins drum sound are: >I DONT CARE ANYMORE from Collins 2nd album 1982, this time the heavy drum sound starts right away as Phil directs his anger and frustration over his marriage failing through the drums. The original album cut or there are a few great early 80s videos where Phil sings while the great Chester Thompson is doing Phil's drum parts. >MAMA>Genesis self titled album. Huge hit, opening track of the album, similar to ITAT as the heavy drum fill kicks in during the middle of the song. There is a good live video from 1987 Wembley outdoors, its the opening song of the concert. Same type of gated reverb heavy loud drumming. Phil was everywhere in the 80s, that drum sound was iconic and very influential and copied. Re when in the concert this was played, I saw Phil Collins solo band tours 4 different years. My recollection is early on it was the last song of the set or an encore. But by this time, 2004, my recollection is that it was the FIRST song after a mid concert intermission. That way the crowd had time to get settled in, and Phil had time to get ready and the stage set up (his drum kit was hidden and then rose up to that top level). That's the way he did it the last time I saw him do ITAT in 1997. Thanks for the great reaction, please DO INTRUDER and the other 2 if possible.
I love Phil and enjoy his Genesis but I was so lucky to see him drumming up a storm in the last tour with Peter Gabriel doing the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway double album in an amazing performance. After that epic they came back for a second set of classics, ending with Watcher of the Skies. Great Phil memory with 5 master musicians at their peak.
A Legend and Master at work! Phil is a world class drummer with an outstanding voice. A true musical ICON. I am the only 1 who gets massive chills at the drum drop? Phil and this song are IMMORTAL one of the greatest performance ever given. The greatest drum drop of all time!
You guys are so good. When your viewers say we wish you should've reacted to the "right" version, you don't wait months or dismiss it altogether, you come back with the version we know and love. Thank you PS: Maybe that means you can go back and react to the live LONG DRUM version of Soul Sacrifice by Santana just for me😉 Supposedly in this one you can see Janis Joplin behind the drummer enjoying the band and waiting her turn to perform. I think I can spot her, see if you can
Hoping you noticed that the drums rose from out of the floor as he approached them. A lot of people miss that. I saw him in Vegas on this tour and the energy at that moment in the arena was overwhelming!
In The Air Tonight was a highlight of every gig Phil played solo. But it NEVER was the last song, neither of the regular set nor as an encore. In the studio Phil used “gated reverb” drum sound. This was developed coincidentally by producer Hugh Padgham, when Phil played drums on one of Peter Gabriel’s solo albums.
well done! you guys knew what was coming....great reaction to him gettnig to the drums! 🥰🙂 this is one of the best live performances i have ever seen / heard. the way he nails the drums and still sings perfectly...it's amazing.
I have about 5 or 6 reactors that I really love... but when I see you two reacting to a all-time great performance of an all-time great song... this is my new favorite... I subbed for your #LedZeppelin reactions... and I know you guys recognize greatness... thumbs up and Thanks guys
I have seen Phil Collins several times, with and without Genesis he is always fantastic. Your faces and reaction to epic songs is so refreshing and fun. Great reaction gentlemen. Youre becoming a habit everyday. A good one✌️😀🎼🎸🎶
I seen him in concert back in the late 80s ...was amazing! The music shows us we are really together....we gotta keep that music together. Yall are appreciated!
I get goosebumps everytime he gets to his drum set. It's so powerful and this is a great song to begin with. But watching him do it is even more impactful. Love you guys and I've been watching for a while now. Keep bringing the great songs and reactions!
@@MrsLynB Phil is truly a legend. No disrespect intended towards Phil but I can't help to compare the 72 year old Phil Collins to the 74 year old Ted Nugent. How is it that Phil is so frail while Ted looks like he has more energy than he did 40 years ago. I am sure it has nothing to do with Phil Collins being a lifelong alcoholic & prescription drug addict, atheist vs Ted Nugent a Born Again believer in Jesus with a lifetime of zero drug or alcohol use.
@@PH_INFO_101 Your right, it has nothing to do with it evident by the abundance of modern day rappers addicted to lean and pills, and the number of rock and roll greats who were religious and had their addictions and vices. If you seriously think the Atheist or Christian part of either of their lives being drug filled or drug free is a primary factor, you have no real world experience with drug addicts or alcoholics.
I saw Phil on his "Hello, I Must be Going" tour, 1983, and it was astonishing! He had Face Value, HIMBG, and he had songs from his Fusion (Jazz/Rock) band Brand X to play in the set! He didn't play any Genesis songs but he was fine with all those other hits and deep-cuts from his first two albums. It was incredible! Not only is he one of the best drummers and singers of all time, he's also one of the best Front Men and songwriters of all time! What a career! He's such an inspiration for me (I'm a drummer and a writer too)!
So glad you decided to this live version of In The Air Tonight - I could see the music flowing through you into your soul, down to the bones. That's what great music does. As always Big Soul Airplay Beats are greatly appreciated.
I would venture a guess that most who have seen this video prefer the live version; over the studio one, something you can’t say about every song or performance in music. Having seen it live myself in concert I will always contend it’s almost like a different song, as the emotion when he performs it live certainly comes across much more strongly.
And his drumming with Genesis from 1971 to 2007 is crazily unknown by many. Saw Genesis with Phil and Chester 14 different times with Genesis and Phil's band. Their drum duets are a frickin master class in drumming.
This song is amazing on the album, this live version is epic. Phil takes it up to 12! I don't think this is the last song of the show. There's another song, well two, "drums, drums and more drums" where Phil, Chester Thompson, the other drummer and they guy playing the congas, can't remember his name, that goes into "Take Me Home" which is an all out party on stage. At the end everyone takes a bow.
@@rk41gator I'm not sure, it appears "In the Air Tonight" does as he's coming from backstage to start. Drums and "Take Me Home" ends with the entire band stepping forward and taking a bow.
