Really enjoyed that. Howard is just Howard and I got the feeling Phil knew what he was letting himself in for. He took it in his stride when (understandably) many others would have been exasperated by Howard's patter. Stern reminds of the very naughty schoolboy you begin by being pissed of with but cannot end up but liking in the end. Robyn is great here too. She's the one who gets Howard when no one else can. Very impressed by Phil's musicianship down the years. One of the best drummers ever. And major cudos to him for mentioning Paul Brady (and John Martyin of course). Great musicians know other great musicians when the hear them.

I have never been able to stand him. I would never attempt to claim that I know who you are by judging you by the use of the word retard, which is no longer acceptable in America except in circles of crass individusls like Stern. I’ve been a major fan of Phil’s since the early 80’s and seen him live 3 times over the decades. Such a terrific performer and an all around good guy. I also thought I had seen and heard everything he’s done but I’ve actually never seen this before. And although there are a few cringy moments (Howard being obsessed with Phil’s love life) this was a mostly enjoyable interview. Especially enjoyed the unplugged versions of Phil’s hits.
@coolcat6303
@coolcat6303 2 года назад
@1RonBurgundy1 Yeah he definitely got unfairly bashed by some music snobs. But Phil is no fraud. He just knew what the masses wanted to hear and wasn’t afraid to give them what they wanted. I personally think that the 80’s were his most exciting and productive period. And once the 90’s came, Phil actually did experiment with some different styles and even did a Big Band album. But he was never a critics darling like Gabriel was or considered cool by the general Rock/Pop audience. But that’s a common reaction to anyone who’s super successful, popular and not considered sexy or cool. Their loss though. Phil is a legend in my book.

His third wife that he divorced and then he got back with her but then she ran off with another guy and married him and she just started living in Phil‘s house down in Florida with this new husband, she’s trying to get more money out of Phil after she got a ton out of him after the third divorce. I’m not sure if Phil got them out of his Florida home. What a horrible woman. She is the mother of the drummer of his band now, Nick, Phil’s son too. He’s only 20. But he’s a very good drummer. As to Collin's answer saying that all the band's members wrote the songs, although technically correct, in reality, Gabriel wrote most of the band's songs, while the rest of the band composed most of its music. After all it was Gabriel's band from the beginning. In a group like Rush, for example, it was Neal Peart that would write all songs while Lee and Lifeson would compose the music.

@@fatalconceit3362 Unfortunate that Howard decided to show off that day. So many questions, so few opportunities. This one blown. Being a huge Rush fan, seeing them in concert 40 times, I am keenly aware of the writing process in that band. I used to collect their interviews before the Internet arrived. But I wasn't aware of the division of duties in Genesis during Pete's time in Genesis. I had read where Steve and Mike had said they were all involved in the Lyrics of Foxtrot, but Peter insisted on writing all the lyrics for Supper's Ready. And I believe that was also true entirely on the Lamb. The guys were obviously bothered with the belief by fans that it was Pete's band and he wrote all the songs. In Rush, Alex and Geddy were happy to have Neil write the lyrics, and he was well suited and happy to do it. They agreed early on all members would get equal writing credits so no jealousies arose. One can only imagine the possibilities for Genesis creations if Pete and Steve had stayed in the band. I suppose we should just be grateful we got some amazing songs and enjoy them.

Howard is just hilarious. So funny that he was trying to get Phil collins to crack but couldn’t do it.

@@Wyndy57 I did not think Stern was funny. Rather pathetic, as he tried to bait Phil into revealing something scandalous mean-spirited (as against Peter Gabriel). Phil was great. He kept steering the conversation back to something he could honestly answer. I too cringed at the thought of his going on the program.....AND cringed during the program. Odd, I have seen Howard do some fine interviews that were insightful. Not here!

Why does Howard always interrupt his guests? He asks a question and then answers them for his guests and assumes that he knows the guest well

Howard is a talking contradiction. He always says "be honest" but he's always telling made up stories to keep the conversation going. If youre a fan you can pick up on that.

Howard Stern & that lady are rude towards Phil. I think Phil was not really happy about being there! The conversation he is trying to be honest & kept interrupting him! At least he never tore down his wives.

It's so obvious that this playbook is gang ambush, interrupt and try to shock your guests out of their comfort zone and evoke reactions. It's like the playground bully starting a fight and then standing back to enjoy the show.

From a "Howard Stern Show" period, in which Stern himself regrets. The interview, would have gone differently, in the much later years - early Sirius in particular.

gotta know Phil regrets becoming smitten and falling in love every other week. and fm radio drilling his songs into our brains to the extent that our regret is to monstrous for remorse.

Damn, Stern is so incredibly dense, such a bad interviewer. He repeatedly fails to realize that the guitarist isn't a member of Genesis, he worked in the band and now he's following Collins onto his solo work. He said as much at the beginning of the interview but Stern is such a poor listener, he's so concerned with everything but the actual answers to his questions. It's still the same to this day.
