Viewer request: the Roland TR-909 pattern from Phil Collins' "Take Me Home". This pattern also has cabasa, so I added a Roland TR-727 as well to play that, but I think it might be Oberheim DMX shaker instead.
Love that this guy doesn’t over explain history or give you the story of life. Just straight knows his stuff and teaches it to you. Which, paradoxically, makes me want to know about his life and how he got so good.
Phil Collins was the most creative TR 808/909 programmer IMHO. Never sounded overtly repetitive, and how it weaved with his acoustic drum patterns were always exciting.
@@SynthManiaDotCom If you listen closely, he has method in his programming madness. He always plans for his interlocking drum parts. He likes to accentuate the upbeats on his drum machines, and leave listeners guessing where the first downbeat falls (e.g. Man on The Corner, In The Air Tonight, Silver Rainbow)
@@davelumenta5206 actually his programming resembles his real drumming style. Nothing random about it. He is a pro when it comes to rythms and overall song writing.
On the 909, I see how it's programmed now, but I have a question; when for example, you program the low tom, you hit button '5' to pick the tom... but i see the box illustration is under '5' and '6'. does that mean you could pick either? Is it so that one will not cancel out the decay of the other, or is it just that both do the same thing?
I was a kid when Tarzan came out so I knew about that and that one Journey song about a train or something. DMX put me on 'In the Air Tonight' and that was it for me, but after hearing this... Phil Collins GO! I got some catching up to do.
Excellent video, Paolo! Your love of 70s and 80s music is always a draw; when you show how to recreate classic songs, I'm taken back to that specific time in my life. Great memories for me and a wonderful talent on your part . . . one I wish I had. :)
@@SynthManiaDotCom you can check the result here. Unfortunately the Jupiter X's 909 can not tune individual drums, but still pretty close. ru-vid.comEAAlFfEDYmA?feature=share
Awesome, I have duplicated your method on an emulator. It really is that easy, thanks to your instruction. The only could not do with the TR-727 and I could not do two measures with the emulators. Roland offers free emulator for 30 days. You have to have a DAW though. I don't have one yet.
Hello Paolo, thank you for posting the worksheet. As many do not have a TR909 laying around; I wanted to see if I could replicate what you did BUT using the IOS app "Funkbox". Using the default 909, I got close BUT the low Tom and clap are on the same assignment. After researching, I found I could create a CUSTOM virtual eprom with all my favorite patches. Thus, I was able to put the hand clap patch on an unused channel. I was also able to add a cabasa to another channel. Worked like a charm. Thanks for the efforts.
Very late answer but yeah this was very early, the 909 was released in mid '84 but it wasn't selling well at first, so it was kinda rare in music. Phil sure was an early adopter, but other producers used it at the time (Skinny Puppy, Schoolly D, Mantronix, Chip E to name a few)
Thank you! If it doesn't have the step sequencer, you can use your DAW's piano roll grid, and paint the notes in there - voila', you can do the same thing :)
Ciao Paolo congratulation you doing outstanding job on your channel . Can you please re-create tonight tonight tonight from Genesis on the Linn drum sequence Pattern I love that song and I tried to figure out how they did it and which drum machine they use for that particular song. Grazie mille Paolo you're the best
You obviously never carried your synth/drum machines for a live performance ; try with "normal size" drum machines you will see how fun it is ; but you're right on Roland, they forgot everything ;
Hi, Love your inspiring and really helpful videos. Greetings from Germany. Can you please do similar Video on the tr 909 pattern from Phil Collins Both Sides Of the Story. I‘d love that. Keep up your great work and enjoy the music. Best Adrian
Good video! Synthmania Rules! i wanna do my petition : replicate the beat of *"Beastie Groove" by the Beastie Boys on a Oberheim DMX* (apparently was used with *'hard rock' chip* ).
Paolo ! Whose your favourite Australian band/artist (obviously from 70-80's)? Love your stuff, keep it the suggestions, makes for some really cool videos as someone who doesn't have the first clue about music production :)
Hi, deznoites, thank you! There are so many awesome Australian bands from the '70s/'80s that I like! I can mention a few but really, Australia has produced a lot of great music - When I was a teen in the '80s in Italy I especially loved the Died Pretty, they came on tour around my town and we went to see them, it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to! I still remember that the keyboard player had a huge double-manual organ that sounded fantastic, although I don't remember which model it was. My friends and I bought this record so it must have been around 1986. My favorite was the song "Blue Sky Day": ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QesuVI-diqE.html Another band that I loved from the era is The Moffs, I bought the Labyrinth album when it came out and I was so enamored with it, especially the song "Touch The Ground": ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L4G5OnouELk.html also Nick Cave ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yXIOAY5B4RI.html On the pop front of course we all loved Kylie Minogue and the S.A.W. production like "I Should Be So Lucky" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bMCXx5k01Tg.html , and loved INXS of course, especially "Need You Tonight" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j07drBZBGe8.html and of course love AC/DC, Men At Work, Icehouse, Midnight Oil, and more recently Empire Of The Sun - but there are literally so many more great bands. Thanks for watching!
Very nice! wouldn't expect anything less from the synth-god himself hahaha, also if you want to hear something new coming out of Australia, which suits the theme of your channel pretty well, have a listen to 'Client Liaison'. wont tell you too much, ill let you judge for yourself ahah! Keep up the great work !
It'll be interesting to check how close my own estimated pattern (Beatstep Pro driving a TR-8) is to your version... I suspect I'll be doing some edits... I use the Beatstep Pro over TR-8 because of having longer patterns, plus for this song I can use one of the "melodic" sequencer lines for the synth sequence.
Ironic that an actual drummer has some of the most iconic drum machine patterns ever created. Or is it? 🤔 Prince has some pretty iconic and unique drum patterns, but he’s not a “drummer” per-se. So actually it kinda makes sense than an actual drummer would create iconic patterns.
Hi Paolo, thank you for this video. It was extremely helpful to me for creating the drum part in my backing track / instrumental version of this song. I have now completed it and uploaded to RU-vid, if you or anyone else would like to check it out, here's the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AautEeCDORM.html I'd love to know what you think! Keep up the good work. Chris
I would never... ever imagined that I could be watching this video (for the 20th time :-P) in 2020 on quarantine. Life can change from one side to another just in a second. As you said, it´s time to do an effort to keep faith and to be positive no just for one but for all of us. Yes, this days I also kept thinking which are the most important things of life, and if I could done more to show my loved ones how much more important they are over anything else. Thanks very much Paolo for your videos!
i've always thought that it would be AWESOME to have this song performed live with a real xylophone/marimba in place of the Popcorn, and a chorus-pedal Fender Rhodes for the electric piano part. Far as I can tell, those seem to be what both of those sounds are based on. :)
Great mix indeed. Ben Liebrand was testing his new sampler ;-) But I prefer the original 12 "versions of the songs. Relax: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-okzmGI-Paj8.html Two Tribes: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pnh7x8aU26g.html
I love the TR-909! I have a bunch of 909 samples, and I am in love with the 909 clap. Looking to get a TR-09. Since you own a real TR-909, do you think a TR-09 is any good?
I've heard the demos of the TR-09 and to my ears it sounds fantastic, and most importantly, has the "feel" of the real TR-909 sequencer, but I haven't had a chance to try at the musical instrument store - I'll try it and get back to you with a comparison
Okay, terrific. I used it in my local guitar center and it felt good but I don't know if it's a good enough emulator to the 909. What I really want is a 909 but.... Obviously I can't afford that.
Nice one! Haven't heard in ages! I used this song as one of compositions to get into music school. Sure enough those are almost all 909 sounds, at the time I was just using samples for my EPS. You can literally 'hear' that the song MUST have been done on an SSL. You can hear the crunchy SSL sound an especially channel compressors and gates being used tons. You can also hear for sure the AMS RMX16 and a few other classic in there. For some reason I think I remember from 20+ years ago the exact tempo of the studio recording is a very tight 118.85BPM. I'm really enjoying the channel, keep it up.
