Phil’s death was so tragic and affected me more than any other celebrity. He was just raw talent and in so many layers. I had wrecked my Ford Explorer that day and my insurance guy suggested a pub crawl. His image came on the tv in the bar at 5pm with his birth year hyphen to 1998. A sobering news report that I will never forget. So very sad.
Wow. Thanks for this upload. Phil Hartman helped make my childhood a lot better and I was so sad to see him go so tragically. When he said "our kids play together" in the interview, my heart sank. To those of us who were lucky enough to be alive when you were, we will never forget you, Phil Hartman!
@@dhpbear2 I promise I mean no sarcasm or disrespect but he was blown off the treadmill. She should have had the common decency to call 911 and turn herself in rather than what she actually did.
hard to watch. i am an insomniac so tom snyder and i had been friends for many many years. phil hartman had more talent in his little finger than many. days gone by
Thank you, Don, for the Snyder piece! Snyder was the best. Was real and unapologetic for his sometimes insensitive questions but all his interviews got to the heart of his fascinating guests! And often TS was funny as hell!
damn, this guy was not only totally hilarious but sharp as hell. so rare to see comedians as articulate and on point as him whilst having an effortless gift in making people laugh. it's easy to tell why he was so loved by his peers in the industry. as for his death, what a tragedy.
May I suggest: That "Effortless Gift" that you describe is a result of a LOT of hours of very hard work, training, and practice. How about complimenting the artist on the amount of hard work they've done. They worked hard to make it seem easy.
@@omahabigbill2789 I'm the other Lumpy. Hard work and practice. That's what makes what we see that looks so easy. Sorry if the explanation is not low-key enough for you.
I'm 36 and I still remember watching TV the afternoon it was announced he was murdered and seeing all the coverage on Hard Copy, Current Affair, etc. He was the greatest!
I'm 37, didn't laugh once back then, and still haven't laughed once at Hartman. Go ahead and flame me, but Hartman is exponentially better playing it straight than attempting comedy, and this excellent interview from Snyder is a perfect example.
@@jshepard152 because he never really knew who he really was. A very insightful observation because Phil admitted he basically got famous by doing a bad impression of someone else(Bill Murray). Phil stated that he couldn't do but wished that "..he could that Swarmy thing he did in Ghostbusters and Groundhog day" even more wild when he actually acted with Bill Murray in Quick Change which also was his only directorial effort.
Troy McClure, a wonderful witty voice character of Phil on the Simpson's amongst others, I wished Phil had the chance to pursue his retirement painting. I hate when bad things happen to good people.
Wow! This is so entertaining. I just love Tom Snyder. I had many many many late nites with Tom and the college books. Man, this brings back so many memories. I worked a full time job while going to school. Seems so long ago.
Was just thinking of Phil Hartman after we saw Poco in concert earlier this month....he did the artwork on their album LEGEND....you know, the galloping wild horse outline. (Phil's bro was Poco's manager) Phil was so talented, loved him on NewsRadio! Such an underappreciated show.....you are the man, Don! Thank you so much!! ;-))
I just wish there was still room for this style of interview in late night, does it always have to be high octane playing for the crowd? I love late night shows, but can't we mix up the styles?
I wish Simpsons would do an episode focused on like a tribute to troy McClure and Lionel hutz. Phil's charachters were my favorite in the simpsons. god it's hard to believe he's died almost 25 years ago
God, hearing his hilarious Sgt Bilko impression spurs me to remember an interview from a writer on the Simpsons who said that writing for Hartman was a pleasure because he could squeeze every drop of comedy from a line. I can see how given Hartman's ability to make lines, and he is remembering extemporaneously hilarious. What a fantastic talent and one of my top five inspirational comedians.
My wife took care of Tom Snyder last 2 week's of his life at hospital where she worked. She lost her life to breast cancer stage 4 4 months ago at age 55.
Phil's murder was the most shocking of all the SNL crew...his mother lost a son and her husband within a month of each other...I often wonder if his father died as a result of grief.
"The 1995-96 season almost completely rebuilt the cast with new members Jim Breuer, Will Ferrell, Darrell Hammond, David Koechner, Cheri Oteri, Nancy Walls, Chris Kattan, Colin Quinn & Fred Wolf. The only holdovers from the previous season were Norm Macdonald, Mark McKinney, Tim Meadows, Molly Shannon & David Spade."
I am sitting here watching this and I can't believe how genuinely Phil Hartman comes across offstage in an interview just a good guy & a pro. I was in my 20s in the 90s and remembered some of his great Clinton impressions but I sort of took him for granted back then. Looking back now he got off life's treadmill way too early and that's a tragedy. He seemed destined to even greater success than at that time. Godspeed, Phil👍
Yeah, around '94-'95 the writing started faltering on SNL and the old magic wasn't there. Soon became a bunch of talents from sitcom backgrounds with no idea how to gel as an ensemble (I understand his desire to move from visual arts to performing. Poor guy never got to that plein-air dream. RIP).
@@Howard007 Agreed. It was nice to see Phil Hartman again, albeit sad. The whole interview was worthwhile; the extra fifteen minutes wouldn't have been wasted. Just sayin'...
Thank you for posting this. You have no idea how seeing Tom Snyder comforts me. So sad how Phil had dreams that were taken from him . RIP Tom,Phil and Paul Rubens.❤💔❤❤❤❤❤
I loved this show when I was in high school. Tom Snyder was great, and I love the more quite intimate atmosphere compared to most late night talk shows. And man, Phil Hartman's murder still stings. Such a talented guy. A shame he'll never get to retire as an artist.
Exact same. I was (and still am) a night owl. I watched this show nearly every single night at 12:30 in my bedroom as a high school and college student. Intimate and live with no audience and live phone calls. Fire up a colortini and relax.
Thank you for posting this. "NewsRadio" is my all-time favorite sitcom and Phil Hartman was one of the greatest performers ever. It's nice to see him being so genuine in his responses, too. I used to have a Dave Foley interview with Tom Snyder from around the same time (the first season of "NewsRadio") on tape but I've since lost all my VHS tapes. Who knows, maybe that interview is already up on RU-vid though.
I have a full set if NewsRadio VHS tapes on CD-ROM. Bootleg. Got those off of eBay. Did my best to wear them out, even though the quality was literally a VHS camera recording of the show as it was playing on TV. Terrible, but I still watched the whole series dozens of times. When a legitimate full set came out on Amazon I was happy to get every episode on CD-ROM. Better quality. I guess you could say it is my favorite sitcom.
I show I saw pointed something about Hartman that surprised me then, but doesn't surprise me now: his greatest joy in life was his children. I think it's what makes him so charming, without being obvious.
When Phil talked about retiring that was so sad because he didnt live long enough to see it happen. Everyone will miss Phil Hartman everyday of our lives.
Watching this makes me tear up. Talented, Funny, Charismatic, Good looking.. just so many things. And i cannot wrap my mind around the reason why Brynn would want to kill him.
I think she was a narcissist. Very selfish disturbed people. The night she killed him, he had threatened to leave her if she went back to drugs or hit their daughter again.
Just think within and in 12 years from 95 both these guys are dead..life is a hockey game alright...never know when the final puck is coming right towards your fragile face to knock ya out for good 🫤😉
Too bad someone important and close to him didn’t warn him with effect about his murderous psycho coke head of a wife “(Dana Carvey)” cough, cough!!??. I really loved all his characters so much, Frankenstein, Sinatra, Unfrozen Cave Man Lawyer, Ed McMahon, Troy Mclure, Lionel Hutts and so many more. The show(SNL) was the best when he was on it, his fellow cast & writers as well were all real awesome! It still makes me smile knowing that I got to enjoy it all when it was going on. Jan Hooks, Molly Shannon, Nora Dun, David Spade, Dana Carvey, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrel, Sherri Oteri, Rob Schneider, Mike Myers, CHRIS FARLEY!, Norm McDonald, Chris Rock, Jim Brewer, Tim Meadows and so on(my spellcheck didn’t help, sorry if I misspelled names of all those I love), 1988-98?. Wow it was a great run while it lasted! So many very versatile, beyond funny members. On Molly Shannon’s last episode she did a hi kick with no panties on right to the camera, live!! I nearly died of laughing so hard and being turned on at the same time. Priceless!!!
I dug both of these guys. I can not think of a gig that either of these guys did that I did not enjoy. Tom from early KNBC news guy to late night talk guy. Phil, in every character he ever played, every bit he ever did, on SNL, or NewsRadio. Both of them, very hard working entertainers. Both of them, made it look very easy. Thank You Tom and Phil.
