It's about 1 % of the adult population for NPD, and same for Antisocial personality disorder. But the traits that people read about are often misinterpreted. And the way these people are in day to day life is often misunderstood.

My ex-husband was diagnosed with bipolar and narcissistic personality disorder with anti social personality disorder and an alcoholic. He was such a JOY to live with! Knew when I divorced him I would become enemy number one but it was well worth it for my sanity. Hard to share custody but children are grown now and daughter has cut of contract and son sees him about three times a year. If I hadn't left, they would have never been ok.

I had never heard of this disorder before, and was so confused as to why he insisted on violating boundaries and trying to make people uncomfortable because he thought it was funny....when I left him after a few months and shared with my family what he had done, it all clicked. Once I thanked my husband for being so kind to me during something hard that was going on (that had nothing to do with him). His response, "I know. This is how a person with empathy would act." You're right. Therapy can definitely make things worse. You'd think, oh well he's working on improving this lack of empathy. No, he got even better at masking a real deficit, and uses that to gaslight even harder.

I'm diagnosed ASPD, how can I improve something that doesn't exist? I assume were talking about ASPD and emotional empathy, I don't even know what empathy feels like. He is never going to be able to feel empathy. It sounds like therapy is doing what it is supposed to do for people with ASPD, teaching him cognitive empathy, and to lessen his manipulation. Though I don't know why he would say "I know. This is how a person with empathy would act." kind of seems like he wants validation for having no empathy.

Well he added too much information- but him having impulse control and thinking of your feelings and what you want to hear was him being considerate. I think he did a lot of effort trying to get it right and did not prepare for you thanking him and how you may not want the truth of it all. It’s virtuous to be truthful but at same time not virtuous to tell the truth. It’s very confusing and sometimes it’s gaslighting US that we should be liars. If the people we love want us to mimic empathy and we achieve it and do it -- using our manipulative powers-- why can’t that be celebrated? I feel like masking is all we do. Dr Phil was right on the comorbidity with anxiety. I have so much anxiety because I need to constantly be watching myself. Every conversation is an improvement of the previous one if i did not get what the needed result last time. It’s like a checklist of things you need to do in situations and oops! Time to add another one. I don’t feel guilty because I truly try my best and I’m so overwhelmed keeping myself in check. I’m struggling so hard to communicate with people, keep people I love happy. But same time, you have to realize we have deficit in understanding emotions. Sometimes I can’t handle all this other stuff on top of trying to keep people happy. And I will prioritize what is necessary over emotions- whether it be yours or dealing with mine. Not dealing with emotions from a young age, it’s hard to recognize any nuance between Happy, Angry and Sad.

I’m diagnosed ASPD (formerly known as sociopathy) It’s good to know, first and foremost, it’s also a spectrum disorder. Not everyone with this is unaware of self. I grew to understand how dangerous I can be with certain types of people and I stay away from them, for their own safety. My symptoms began at 15. I was a dangerous kid. I was aggressive, but I was more of a conartist than anything. I can find loopholes in anything. I used people. I hurt people. All for my own benefit. And I saw it as playing a game and they lost every time. I’ll be 41 tomorrow. With a lot of therapy under my belt. I actively try to improve who I am every day, for the sake of those I love. I hate how I used to be. I am still ASPD But I am aware and much less of a threat than I used to be. He’s right..no remorse. I didn’t feel bad for what I did. I still wouldn’t feel bad if it’s someone I’m not attached to. Again, why I stay home lol. I’m a single mother of 2. Raising them is my only focus. I think if I didn’t have children, I’d be a lot different today.. I’d most likely be in prison Edit: cruelty to animals happens mostly with psychopathy. Psychopathic people are more likely to deliberately harm/kill someone than someone with “sociopathy”

I done stuff in my life, I'm 26, I was never diagnosed with any personality disorder, but I have these dark traits, I still don't know what it is, maybe I'm not a sociopath and something far worse, I don't know. I was recommended DBT therapy for some odd reason but rejected it, so it's possible I was diagnosed with SOMETHING but doctors refuse to say what. I know this sounds stupid and something an edgy teenager would say, but since I have no label, maybe I'm not a sociopath or a narcissist, maybe I'm an evilist or something, not necessarily a sadist though. I've spoken with many sociopaths and my thoughts and opinions and other stuff about me isn't as messed up as theirs. I gave up therapy years ago and don't plan to go back, never any help. Oppositional Defiant Disorder was mentioned in my past but the things I've done overstepped that diagnosis, in fact, I can't even go over the stuff I've done. I don't feel bad though. I can't say. Certain places don't allow me to talk about it. I can't support such things openly. Maybe I'm just a dark mean neurotypical, who knows?

I remember, as a child, hearing that some cousins in Florida narrowly escaped a hurricane in which their house and all their possessions were destroyed. My father's response was, "They have lots of money. They'll buy a new one." I said that they must be real scared. Shouldn't we do something to help them? He said, "Na. They're rich." He was serious. No empathy whatsoever. I was watching this video because I thought my sibling might be a psychopath. Now I know where she gets it from.

I have aspd (diagnosed as a young child. Now I am 28) it is a hard thing to live with, but there are two different aspects of how this disorder hits a person. I on disability because of the aspd (along with ptsd and did) but I can honestly say I do my damndest to keep out of that self serving need. I am so glad to have found this podcast series. I was in a 20 year relationship (17 years married) and with 3 teens children. I knew something wasn't right but had no clue until 3 years ago even what a narcassist was. After a childhood of abuse (physical, sexual and verbal) and me being an empath, it gave him the advantage he needed. As I reflect back over the years there were signs I brushed them under the rug. Or he would say he loved me in between. In the end, in Feb 2020 I was at my lowest point in all my life. He had taken everything from me. My self worth, my integrity and my kids. Even though we all lived in the same home, my children dispised me. He made me believe that I was the worst person on Earth. Not a good mom, not a good spouse nor even a good friend. And no matter what my friends and family told me, I saw no relief. I woke up one morning and just wanted to die. I could never harm myself but I wanted to naturally have something happen. But instead, God saved me. I was reminded through him how good I am. So I started going back to church and Ioved out in March 2020. At 1st he seemed "OKAY" with the idea. Like it would be fine. I was done with the relationship and wanted out and he convinced me to try therapy. We went to 2 sessions and it made it worse. He was now a wrecking ball because he had no control and I was on my own. He was raging, harassing me and making tons of accusations of me cheating when married. I finally got a camera system and he actually filed divorce April 2020 (before I could) then I was left following his parenting plan and such. In the end when the divorce was final March 2021, I gave him everything, the house (and almost all belongings) no child support, no alimony and 50/50 custody thinking it would keep him off my back or solve everything (I WAS WRONG)

The kids are still manipulated and I have learned to listen to what he is saying but not take anything serious. I know it is all a lie, although he can take me right back to the bottom and make me feel like the worst person in one sentence. He is still threatening in nature and unfortunately having joint custody we have to communicate. But what hurts is my kids. How do I save them from this situation and get them away from him when they are all teens and don't understand. I didn't see it for many years and I felt it was all me, as he made me believe I was the reason for all of our problems. Now that I have heard Part 7- Antisocial personality disorder, I wonder if he has this instead of being a narcassist. And Dr. Phil thank you SO much for your education to these types of people. I use to say I needed to go to your show and I am a HUGE fan of you and Robin.

Like you mentioned, the ASPD and NPD won’t come in for therapy. Why would perfection need help?!? 😆 So therapists/counselors often receive little training on this. The problem is that you WILL see many people coming in for emotional/physical abuse received from these people, or as mentioned, in couples/marriage/family therapy. So I hope that therapists start to learn/study more on the subject so that they can more readily identify the dynamics and spot these disorders. I’ve seen therapists/counselors easily manipulated by clients, with disastrous results.

I’m wondering how great a role alcohol plays in with some antisocial personalities. Over the years I’ve been surrounded by a few alcoholics …and when drunk they would do things that violated the rights of others…whether driving drunk, parking on a sidewalk, disrupting a restaurant or theater etc with no remorse after. When sober they were more subdued but still not with empathy for others. When I watched a few documentaries on Ted Bundy…I learned he usually drank before abducting the women…and also drank before representing himself during his trials. I know the alcohol doesn’t cause it…but it’s interesting to me that it sometimes seems needed for courage or to amplify their disorder for power.

I've read stats that say about 30-50% of rapes, robberies & suicides are committed under the influence of alcohol. It definitely is a mood-altering substance that removes inhibitions & impairs judgment more than people give it credit for. I get MEAN and depressed when I drink so I just don't. Look at all the outbursts on airplanes recently; guarantee those are fueled by booze.

From what I understand, the traits must be present without alcohol or drug use. I think that applies to all personality disorders. Substance abuse is common with personality disorders.

This series is a LIFE saver!!!.. This is a comfortable and casual conversation. My psycho abuser called aggression, "justice". He was not assertive or even clear what he wanted. Treatment just makes them more covert and dangerous.

OMG!!!!!! This is my life for over 30 years!!! He ruined my credit 3 times …. He’s a con man & you’d never see it…. He took everything, took equity loans from our home … I never saw one cent, the money disappeared…. He has a storage unit… took all our marital assets slowly through the years while I was at work…. He was diagnosed anti social personality disorder…. I had no idea it was this serious of a disorder I thought he was a narcissist…., Most definitely hereditary…. You wouldn’t believe my story…. I’m shaking right now.

You described my brother. I've already separated myself from him completely, but it still makes me sad that he's facing the world and his demons alone. I wish there were something we could do to snap them out of it. I wish we could fix them by hitting them like an old TV set.

Thanks for honoring my right to state my opinions. I suggest that if our hot buttons are pushed one too many times ... we all have toxic personalities. Phil earns his money by assessing other people's toxic personalities. But my guess is ... HE has one too ... but that he wouldn't TAKE therapy from a therapist that wanted to counsel HIM. Ego is a formidable beast, as we never WANT to see ourselves ... as others see us. If you just tried insulting "doctor" Phil's wife ... you would see how fast Phil becomes "toxic."

Hi Dr. Phil, I watch your videos now for about four years. I've watched almost all of them with note and pen to learn everything you said in the show(in this video in particular I quoted all your famous phrases). You helped me come out from alcohol addiction (I have my beloved psychologist too) and you've helped me understand a lot of things. Because of you I want to study psychology and this podcast is wonderful. So, THANK you Dr. PHIL, I love you and Robin like family :)

I am just seeing this series of videos, and they are great. But I always thought I was antisocial, because I am not good in a crowd of people I don't know, and especially if there is alcohol involved. I just stay away by myself. I was really surprised at what an antisocial personality really is. I am not that at all!! Thank you for clearing this up. I guess I am the other one you mentioned, the one that doesn't get close because of fear of failure. I have attracted disfunctional relationships in the past and just don't want to repeat it anymore. I am almost 70 and would like an easy, happy relationship, or just a friendship, but am not sure I will find that. I have always been a quiet person, too.

Thank you for this insightful series. This has given me a better understanding of my situation with different family members. It made me realize that how important to maintain boundaries. Also where my responsibility starts and stops. How I manage myself around these individuals. I have always felt everything negative that happened was always my fault even thou I was not present. Any way I am in counseling and working through everything and learning boundaries. I will review your earlier videos again. I am sharing this with other family members that have suffered from the abuse of toxic behaviors of these type of people in my family. You have no idea. It takes a lifetime to heal. But I also learned how important it is for me to forgive and let go in order to move on. I am going to share this with my counselor 🙂. Again thank you for putting this series together and educating people. May God Bless you.

May I point out that manipulations could be unintended and undetected by even manipulators themselves, and also how to weigh a 'charm'? Plus, remorse is something... If a person does not do anything intentionally bad/evil, one may never experience remorse?

Sincerely, I am somewhat devastated by this material. Well, more regarding narcissistic disorder. My mom is definitely a narcissist. My recently X'd wife is a cover narcissist, I think. But I meet many of the points that make me worry that I have misjudged people I truly love and have self sabotaged my whole life! For instance, I DO believe I am isolated from the world by my abnormal understanding of the world. But I despise attention. I need help.

I am so looking forward to your continuing education on how to identify these sick people and obtain the skills to keep them away from me All my life I've been a magnet to them.
