That said, the tlou port was horrible, pokemon has horrible performance, but they both have blind fans that don't care cuz the gameplay is still there and nostalgia is working. Redfall doesn't have that crutch.
Playstation fan here. It's been fascinating to be a spectator on the sideline for the past few days. Absolutely gained a lot more respect for Phil after watching this. Believe it or not, I was hoping Redfall would be a massive success because I want Sony to be on their toes. GP was directly responsible for improving PS Plus. Competition is good.

Absolutely. Playstation fans benefit from a healthy and productive Xbox ecosystem. Like you said, PS Extra is fantastic, and would in no way exist without Game Pass.
@@SeaToSkyImages that was always the case. Without a strong 360 and xbox live, we wouldn‘t have the great single player games from sony and and abysmal online service. And without the success of the ps4 (and failure of the x1 launch) we wouldn‘t have gotten great backwards compatibility and game pass from xbox. When all of them are healthy and make good products, everybody wins. One bad game or some problems can be good wake up calls. Even if it sucks when a game isn‘t as good as it could be.
As a playstation fan, I never root for a game to be bad. Was really bummed to see all this go down for the xbox community. But hopefully they can dust this off and get some amazing stuff in the future.
The idea that "making great games wouldn't affect console sales" is just complete cope-level nonsense. It's how Nintendo pulled people back in with the Switch, how Sony regained the market with the PS4, how Sega was able to be a force in the early 90s and how Microsoft was even able to enter the market with its first console! It's as close a golden rule in this industry as it is possible to have and all this guff about people "not abandoning their digital library" is zero excuse for 10 years of first-party failure.
I’m not even an Xbox gamer, but what Mike and the KF crew have created with the X Cast has been very impressive to watch. This interview is proof that Mike and his gaming dads are some of the best in today’s video gaming journalism. Thanks guys for always being awesome.
Particular shout out to Parris who asked a lot of the hardest questions and keeping it real while remaining respectful. Really reflected a lot of the most popular frustrations from the community. I couldn't give a crap about Xbox but when they drop the ball like this for so long, we all lose.

I mean, in 3 years (2020-2023), except Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, there is nearly none PS5 exclusivity (I don't count a game like Returnal because it is now available on PC, also same thing for God of War Ragnarok who also has a PS4 version). This PS5/Xbox next gen is a real joke. There is nothing who interest me except Final Fantasy XVI. Nintendo on the other hand has nearly an new exclusivity each month since 2023. Most of Xbox’s history is rooted in failure. This guys legacy will be known as one of the most apologetic “bosses” in recent corporate history. Failure after failure yet Xbox fans are quick to forgive as soon as yet another self-pity video comes out. This is the team you celebrate taking over activision?? I was never excited for RF - the marketing didn't make it out to be my kind of game, but sure, I was disappointed at H:I. , but average metacritic score for first party xbox games is better than Sony's at this point. As much as you desperately need Redfall to be a failure, it still has a better user score than The Last of Us Part 2 on the same platform... both scoring badly for the same reasons. Yeah. He knows. It’s a pretty crappy time to be an Xbox fan and the community is pretty sour about the brand. I’m still optimistic about games like fable and hellblade 2 but right now, it just sucks.

It’s like politics at this point. The most heinous instance of this was when they tried to bump Xbox Live prices way up and reversed the decision when they got major pushback. People were genuinely praising them for “listening to the gamer” and so on. Dystopian.
Credit to Phil for coming on and being as open as he was. A lot of CEOs would just give super bland, PR style answers. But, these felt like sober, honest answers.
He did give PR style answers. Literally everything he said. He still said the same things he’s always said, but with acknowledging that he always says the same things.
Great podcast. Everyone has a chance to say their point. A lot of compassion. A lot of hard questions. Nobody talking over each other. Respecful, civil.
Honestly, I don't see how Redfall can be considered ambitious or "something new that hasn't been done before". It's derivative beyond belief, as if it checked off boxes on a list of features prevalent in other games, and made them worse at the same time. It felt like the team building it had little to no investment, and the final product simply reflected that.

Phil is a very likable guy. I'm more of a Nintendo nerd. I do think a lot of people are taking what Phil said out of context, but the last thing Phil said is the worst thing he could've possibly said "If we build great games it's not going to shift the market" Yes....yes it will. Nintendo is proof that if you make great games, people will be attracted to your platform "There's not a world where Starfield isn't a 11/10 and people start selling their PS5's" Fair point. Why would I sell my PlayStation. If Starfield's an 11/10 that would make people buy their consoles more. I don't expect MS to win the console race. I expect great games from Xbox. I do think people are taking Phil Spencer's word out of context, and I'm glad I listened to the interview myself.
He's saying people are locked into their eco systems. Which i agree with, but if he made a fantastic game. i'd find a way to play it. I love Gears for example. I'd play it on pc or buy a series x if they had a few great games.
@@wkadalie Again fair. I have no problem with that. Problem is if they don't make great games no one's going to invest in it whether it's PC or Xbox. I think it makes way more sense for MS to make games on Windows than Sony. But if I stop buying games on MS platforms that means I'm no longer investing in MS which means I'm no longer in the Xbox ecosystem. I have no issue with Xbox being last place. I don't care who the top dog is, if anything I support the underdog. I supported PS3 when they struggled. I became a Nintendo die-hard during the Wii U's life. I am an underdog fan. I have Xbox, but I'm not an Xbox fan. I don't care about it. When you fail to get the fan of the underdogs to care about your platform there is something wrong. I get what you're saying if you're having fun that's all that matters and I get that. I appreciate the bc, and game pass but that's simply not enough. I honestly think that MS should go third party in the console market. Because most of the Xbox ecosystem games I'm interested in, are on Nintendo anyway. Further destroying any chance of me staying in their ecosystem. I appreciate the game being on a platform I already care about but still, Nintendo isn't even a part of the Xbox brand. I'm also just tired of Xbox gamers being bullied by PS gamers. If you like Xbox cool. But that's the reality. If I'm proven wrong, good. I want Xbox to succeed, I'd rather be proven wrong than right.

Mike absolutely crushed hosting that interview with Phil Spenser. I mean that was some of the best interviewing talent I’ve seen in years. Was incredibly respectful but did ask all the perfect hard hitting questions we all were thinking and even having follow up questions the moment they popped into our heads as long as the timing was right. Also gathering a great amount of information from Phil when he looked like he was about to cry yet never once came off rude or in any way a bad person was so great! The amount of information we all know because of this X-Cast is weeks if not months of material (if I cared to do so). Anyways you gained my respect SnowBikeMike. That was great!

Besides: Even though Redfall in its current state is a broken mess, that doesn't mean that there is no potential in it. It was a mistake to release the game in its current state and they should not have done that. But the game --can-- be fixed, and they will eventually do that.
I’m sorry, but Phil’s comment about how making great games won’t change the console share is some weird Don Mattrick-esque executive speak. The Xbox 360 had so much enduring appeal because of its library. Xbox has lost its way and now their console shares have decreased since the 360 era. If this is the route Xbox continues down, they are eventually going to abandon hardware and just be a video game software company.
fair play to Phil. people might not like his answers, but out of the big three console manufacturers, he's the only leader who even agrees to be on podcasts like this, especially when it's time to face the music over something, especially courageous knowing most of the internet will tear him to pieces no matter what he says.
That's what makes the situations they're put in so fascinating. Nintendo and Sony can have as much success they want, but they'll never show their selves. If Phil was surprised/disappointed at the reception and reviews of Redfall then that’s concerning. Who did these mock reviews?!? Nearly every REAL reviewer found it hard to find any good things about the game.

I think they knew... he had to spin it a bit but I think they knew but they also knew a delay would not help the core part of the game. They had to release it and take their lumps and move on. But with the game being the first MS game at $70 (I think) its a tough one to really flub up. But no doubt that bit about the internal reviews in my opinion was the only real spin in this interview. They had to know...
If they did which I can't imagine they didn't, clearly they had fanboys and/or the tech industry's version of "yes men" testing the game, people too afraid to give criticism usually because they're afraid of hurting feelings instead of the product. The approach of being nice to protect someone's feelings is going to result in less quality and more failures, no matter the industry but particularly in tech where it is more prevalent. Genuine criticism is necessary, coddling of one's feelings at the expense of the truth that a product isn't up to par is detrimental.
Phil should have played it himself. If he did then he didn't care and if he didn't then what the fuck? Huguely important release and if he didn't play through the whole game before its release then that's pure incompetence.

Thank you for this post, I am trading in my Series X console today. Microsoft/Xbox goal is to play their games anywhere, you don’t need a console for that. There’s a GamePass application on my TV. Phil Spencer has made this clear as day, they are not working towards what Sony/Nintendo are doing. They are building a gaming service that will be available everywhere (provided you have the application similar to NetFlix)
Story time, I bought into Xbox with the 360, I’ve got nearly 300 completions and 300k gamerscore, I’ve bought countless special controllers, several versions of custom Xbox’s, multiple times per generation, I’ve spent countless money on collectors editions and games and limited accessories… Xbox one came, didn’t really feel it, fell off for a few years doing other games for mobile and life. Grabbed a PS4, played a few exclusives nothing special. Now this gen, I have the Halo infinite Xbox series X, I have a Forza 5 controllers, I bought the damn headset… but I have unsubbed from gamepass for the very first time, the console hasn’t been on in MONTHS. Meanwhile, I am now fully into PlayStation 5 since last year, trophies and platinums, all the exclusives, and all the third party. I love rpgs, Xbox keeps getting skipped, it’s so incredible hard to want to use Xbox as my third party machine even as a pity machine. I don’t like multiplayer, there goes grounded and Minecraft etc I don’t like RTS, there goes Age of Empires, Flight Sim? Not for me, as examples. Out of the very few exclusives they have released, that I would enjoy, I have. I did my best with Halo, one of my favourite franchises, I have bloody statues of MC and team Noble from Reach, but it was middle of the road and a bit of a letdown. Forza 5 was a masterpiece, no regrets, 150hrs getting that completion, but there’s been not much else. Redfall was the game I was looking at the most, and it’s just …. Jesus Christ man I know this is long winded, and companies don’t care about you, but I have for the first time since Halo 3 in Xbox 360, when I started playing, lost all faith, I’ve given up. No more subscriptions, no buying games. I know it’s dumb to put so much effort and energy and time into a companies gaming console, but gaming is my only hobby and my life’s passion in my free time, I do not care for anything else I’ve done or tried. Podcasts to communities to websites to social media, it’s all gaming for me every day. Genuinely hurt, which feels so dumb to say, but they need to do something, feel like I’ve been left out in the woods, with promises and empty words. I don’t understand how this happened. How this has carried on for so long? Why can every other company at least serve SOME AAA bangers few times a year of personal interest and Xbox can barely do ONE. Luckily PS5 has insane quality and quantity, with more third party titles that I prefer, so I’m all in for them. For the first time in 15+ years, Xbox is getting packed up, and I just hope one day Phil and the team can give me something to unpack it for, and not just a single game a year, I need more. Please do better, and make me care again. Cheers

But I enjoy Farcry like games, I enjoy Vampires, I enjoy Arcane (Dishonored etc) so despite the ehhhhh previews, I was like nah, I will give it a go, I will try myself first, but the reviews came, the gameplay game, the clips, the issues, and what broke the camels back for me was Skillups review, that was my ‘personal’ last straw, the straw of, I won’t even bother downloading this right now, it would waste my free time. Going back to it, I had hope though, hope that some previews and gameplay was just badly edited or cherry picked, that there was at least SOME fun to be had, but, I don’t play coop so, the only fun this game may currently give I wouldn’t enjoy either
People need to give Phil some credit. He takes responsibility, he doesn't have a tantrum, he doesn't start trying to blame others, he's honest and doesn't sugar coat it. These are subtle things that are important in a leader/ceo.
he's a politician. He just knows which strings you have to pull to manage a dangerous situation like this one. He lied about Scalebound, Crackdown 3, Halo, Redfall... but somehow you all still give him credit. For what? Imprisoning the whole gaming inside a cheap subscription?
It doesn’t sound like Phil is getting the problem. Redfall has 3 most critical problems 1) the bad AI not being able to properly target or pose a fight against players; 2) The bugginess is also very high both within the game and even down to the stability and UI issues; 3) the missions are messy, enemy placement is bizarre and the story presentation is very underwhelming and uninspired. Arkane Austin did screw up. If the AI was decent and the bugs weren’t so demoralizing and the game seemed more inspired, people would have been ok with the art-direction, the frame-rate and maybe even be willing to wait for more content for the game to get more fleshed out. Phil doesn’t seem to be getting that Arkane Austin allowed crucial design fundamentals slip through their fingers. He should be more impacted here. He still sounds very nonchalant about everything and I hear no commitment or strategy to get better results as a leader.

Nah, you are not getting it. The game never had any real vision. No matter how polished the game was, no matter how much they improved the ai, the game is soulless. You won't fix that by placing more enemies, either. I bet it was the devs that wanted to get rid of it and start working on something that actually inspires them. Because this game is obviously a chaotic attempt by zenimax to get some gaas money with a looter shooter, like bungie did with destiny and ubisoft with the division. And when Xbox took over they didn't even pay attention to the game.
Phil should've been honest from the start. He's been the fun, positive, friendly game CEO pretending like everything is going okay behind the scenes when it's obviously not the case. Now that their first AAA game flopped, he's changed his demeanor, and is trying to do damage control. If Phil was honest, Xbox wouldn't be in the trenches.
I think this might be the best interview I've seen in gaming in a while. Tough honest questions and Phil answered them with honesty even if it didn't make him or Xbox look good.

I think Phill should talk to people outside the Xbox community. From what I see in the Xbox community is that (part of it) is willing to accept every load of crap that Xbox drop on them without complaining. I love Xbox since the first one came, and I still love it but they are just punching the fans in the face with one wrong decision after another. No great game at the launch, still no great game at all so far, no game capable to justify the $500 dollars 12Tf most powerful, blablabla. Man, I’m a huge XBox fan. I have the seriesX, one S, I have the hat, the shirt, the Xbox lamp, to sum up, I’ve been playing Xbox since 2007 and I’ve never been so disappointed with it.

Obviously bad for Spencer and Xbox, but Todd will be doing the interviews after that shit-show (hopefully the game's actually good, of course) -- I mean, Bethesda is making a Bethesda game, even though they're under Zenimax. I imagine Todd Howard and his gang get a lot more creative freedom than the Arkane team had. HOWEVER, one could also see Redfall as Arkane's "Fallout 76" moment. His only job is to smooth over the bumps and keep subscribers from leaving GP. Some are more concerned with some faux relationship with a brand spin doctor than the quality of games they should be offering. Wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't prerecorded in preparation of the fallout.

The fact that Phil said the only goal is "did the game achieve its creative vision?" and it being a broken mess is fine because they'll fix it EVENTUALLY. GUYS, the crash rate is pretty low! Cannot believe that came out of his mouth. Selling a functioning product should be part of your "creative vision".
No, those are two different things my friend, one is all about the tech functionality and the other how good the art, story, music, playability ( fun) the game is. And are address by different teams. I know it because I do that for a living ( computer systems engineer)
Mike and the team did a really good job with this interview. I think the Xcast is the only regular KF show that’s started since I began listening in 2020, and it’s been great to see how Mike has developed throughout the shows history.

@@epictroy well, on PC alone the shader stutter is ridiculous and unacceptable. The game is 30fps on console, and clearly they wanted a 60fps mode, which wasn’t ready at launch, thereby the game as unfinished. You see, when a feature is supposed to be in a game but isn’t done in time and the devs promise a future patch, that’s called unfinished. Then you can look at the state of the game systems. The Ai was clearly not done. The loot system was clearly not done. The open world was clearly not finished. No immersive sim elements like they advertised in every single advertisement. No matchmaking in their co-op game? Yeah, you keep thinking it’s “finished”. It’s acceptance of this garbage that allows this type of behavior to become acceptable.

@@epictroy I'm not sure if that was a genuine question or if you were trying to be smart. If it was the latter that backfired a lot. You can't just publish a game with fundamental issues and say it's still "finished" because you can somehow make it to the credits. Gamers are smarter than that.

His views on exclusives not being what drives console sales is moronic. “We lost the console race last gen when digital libraries were built”. Well Phil, Sony and Nintendo sell way more consoles. They have exclusives AND THEY RELEASE IN A PLAYABLE STATE. “There is no world where Starfield is an 11/10 and everyone runs out to sell their PS5s” uh im ready to sell my Series X for a PS5 because of your BS so I’d say you’re also wrong there. Live services aren’t going to save the Xbox. Great games will save the Xbox. Just because you’re so out of touch you disagree with it doesn’t make that not true. Honest my ass. Asked him if he knew the game was in the state that it was when it released and all he said was basically "nobody wants to release a game in this state." But that wasn't the fucking question. We know they don't WANT to release unfinished games but the question is did they know that's what they were doing when they released it? We know the answer but Phil couldn't be honest.

I really like Phil Spencer and his work with Xbox. Backwards compatible games, cloud streaming, cross platform play. All thanks to this man. The state of gaming was going down a dark greedy path before he came on board. He literally changed the entire industry. Any one complaining about his work know they couldn't do better considering all the challenges he has faced.

This interview was frutrating at times because: Parris (did a great job) but some of the questions were a little too long winded and seemed to start off with the REAL question and then get weighed down by fluff and not wanting to offend Phil. -this bummed me out because based off phils demeaner here, i think he was open to being more honest than the interviewers thought. Like when parris said: "didnt necessarily deliver on 12 month window" and phil goes "DIDNT deliver. We didnt deliver" I feel like there was way more meat on the bone to be had here that wasnt taken advantage of.

@Sascha Herrmann I was already seriously worried about Fable 4 from the moment it was first announced due to it being developed by Playground Games who have only ever made Racing genre games. Why in God's name would xbox entrust their flagship RPG series to a developer that has never made an RPG in their entire existence??? They should've just given it to Obsidian who know a thing or two about RPGs. I'm not much of an xbox fan but Fable is one of the very very few xbox IPs that I really enjoy playing and it baffles me that they'd entrust the series to the Forza guys.
Great show. Despite the problems, Phil is so much better for Xbox than Don. Love the candor. Hosts nicely balanced asking tough questions with still treating Phil like a real person with feelings.

I’m fine with diversity in games. Xbox does a very good job with it. With two weaknesses. Kids (arguably) and Japanese games. JRPG are very important. I shouldn’t still be putting blue dragon disc in my series x lol

First time watching this show - Phill seems cool, but the host lost me quite quickly, particularly with "blocking our acquisition of Activision". That may be one of the most nauseating things I've recently heard. "Our acquisition" - like a football team, but worse. Microsoft is a huge corporate monolith - what a werid thing to build a sense of communal ownership around. It's the final stage of console war insanity.
I’m a PlayStation guy. Last time I played Xbox was the 360 days. It just sucks to see any part of the gaming industry fail. It’s just sad to see. Although, I will say, it’s a bit of a wake up call for lazy games publishers when their lazy game fails. Which is good. The current state of AAA gaming has just allowed a lot of publishers to deliver half baked, lazy projects, and empty promises, yet still slap a $70 price tag on it and people will still buy it. It’s good that people are losing trust in the publishers that have fucked them over time and time again. Cuz it’s been what? 10 years in the making now?
What is wrong with Xbox’s pipeline that even their delayed games need more delays and/or come out lacking? Who knew that IGN early footage had it right all along.
Even tho I'm more a PS guy this interview was really refreshing and honest. If Sony were in Microsoft's shoes right now I wouldn't expect a guy like Jim Ryan to show such humility and honesty. Kudos to Spencer for being a man and facing the audience, much respect! 👏🏼
That is true - whether PS would get into this position or not, JR wouldn't be seen on a show like this. And I wouldn't trust Jimbo as far as I could throw him. However, for all the honesty, why did they release the game in this state? He talked a lot about stuff, but I didn't actually hear an answer...

Good to see the interviewers not hold back on the questions, I’m glad Phil answered them honestly. You can see he’s upset about the state Xbox is currently in and I hope they can turn things around. It just really sucks having to keep waiting and waiting only to be disappointed. Things need to change and Phil knows that, hopefully he finally does something about it.
@Black King He never said great games were useless lmao, he said making great games won’t make a huge amount of PlayStation gamers switch over because they’ve already gained loyalty and built their library of games with them and he’s 100% correct. His point was that making great games isn’t the only way to compete and that’s the reason they wanna go off and do their own thing. While it’s completely fair and deserved to criticize his leadership, the Series X|S are on pace to outsell the Xbox 360 and it’s still making records amount of money, it’s nowhere near dead.
For me the worry is, is phil in over his head in terms of his job title in comparisio. With his actual skills. Does he have the skillset abd knowledge to turn things around or is he underqualified? I liked his enthusiasm when he took his role a few years back but his performance and some of his recent quotes are questionable

I do think the Activision purchase is terrible for the industry, and I never like a megacorp flex. And yes Microsoft is in the monopoly/oligopoly territory. i have a feeling we will look back and see this as a "oh wish that hadn't happened" moment in game history. Anyway -- with all that said -- 100% its very refreshing to hear how open and honest Phil is. And id give Redfall a try still down the road if they can fix it up. I liked the concept and was excited for it until it came out and bombed. Its 6 months later and i haven't heard a peep about it -- so this game may just be dead? But if it pops up in 2024 again ill give it a shot. Good conversations here.
Oof. As an Xbox gamer I was a little disturbed at how MS have basically admitted defeat in the console space, which then explains why they don't care about Xbox gamers having the best version of a multiconsole game like Deathloop and Ghostwire, and it explains why they didn't even bother with a physical release of both those games on xbox, yet they did on PS. You can't even buy a XSX half the time, and it doesn't seem like they really care about changing that.
Phil didn't say they admitted complete defeat in console gaming or that they don't care about console gamers lol. Phil literally said that consoles are the core of the Xbox ecosystem. It's just that great games alone aren't enough to outsell PS and Nintendo because they are way too behind for them to catch up without Sony screwing up somewhere like they did with the PS3's launch. And that is true, just look at the poor sales of the GameCube, Dreamcast, and Xbox in comparison to the PS2. At the end of the day, why does it matter if Xbox is outselling PS or Nintendo, so long as they are competing? Xbox can still be number one in the gaming industry without being number one in console sales. Xbox is just taking their own strategy and direction with their business model because they realized it is now hard to compete by copying the same exact business model that Sony had. That is exactly what Nintendo did after the failure of the GameCube. They "admitted defeat", since they realized they could never compete with PS and Xbox by copying Sony's business model to a T. So guess what they did? They created the Wii, an underpowered console with a unique gimmick that made it different from the PS3 and the 360. The Xbox ecosystem is Xbox's Wii.

Phil is exactly what is missing from other game companies but that doesn’t make up for the lack of quality with Xbox. You might argue Sony and Nintendo don’t need to do this because the games works and speaks for themselves. Xbox just has nothing that is making folks outside of gamepass be excited. There is little to nothing from the long announced titles we can even be excited about. Xbox needs a Zelda, a Last of Us, a Spider-Man, hell a Pokémon…something that says you can’t and won’t be able to play this thing anywhere nothing like it and if you got gamepass boom you have it. We just have a large library of games but nothing from Xbox has broken the mold here or become the definitive experience you only got on Series X
