Alexander III, son of Greek King Philip of Macedon, is better known with his nickname "the Great." Born in 356 B.C. he is considered by most historians to be one of, if not THE, best military commanders in world history. Alexander, who was never defeated in battle, controlled a vast empire that spanned most of the known world by the time of his death in 323 B.C. at age 33.

Alexander the Great did not subjugate Sparta. It was not until the Battle of Megalopolis that Sparta was subjugated by Antipater, who had been appointed by Alexander as the Regent of Greece, while Alexander was on his Asian Expedition. It was while Alexander was in the Levant, in the midst of the Battle of Tyre that he received word of Antipater's victory against Sparta and their Persian allies against a unified Greek army. Antipater was a Macedonian General who was Philip of Macedonia's closest friend.

Macedonians were indeed Greeks. The battle of Chaeronea comprised of the Athenians and their Greek allies vs the Macedonians and their Greek allies. For some context, I will quote the eminent historian, J. B. Bury:

in Greek its "Μακεδονία" with a K, so the correct pronunciation is maKedonia, for example as we say make or poker.

The Macedonian Council along with his Companions declared Philip as King, he never really intended to become one, evidently he was to follow the line of succession and raced back to Pella to be regent to his nephew.

I could not see Philip and the Macedonians beating up on a strong and unified Greece. With Sparta weakened along with Athens and Thebes they were like buzzards in the sky coming down on a dead carcass.

Why not Philip the great?

Macedonia is Greek. Archeological findings and history tell us so. Nowhere in history there is a mention of a country named Macedonia. Macedonia in history is referred to as a Greek city state. Alexander united the all the Greek against the Persians and took revenge for what they did to Greece. Visit Vergina in Pella Greece and see all the archeological findings. Ancient Macedonian coins with Alexander on them and his name written in Greek. And so many other findings.

Alex was greek but not the type of greek like athenians and Spartans because they were a separate place and when greek United to make a country they didn't have land of macedon yet so it is confusing.
