A JOURNEY BY BOAT TO SOME OF THE MOST REMOTE ISLANDS IN THE PHILIPPINES...
I met up with Kumar in Puerto Princesa Palawan, and took a van to Bataraza. From there, it was a traditional boat ride into the middle of the Sulu Sea! What an incredible feeling it was looking off the bow of our boat and laying eyes on this island municipality in the middle of the sulu sea. Mapun (originally known as Cagayan de Sulu, and then Cagayan de Tawi-Tawi) is probably one of the most isolated municipalities in the country. This is home for the Jama-Mapun, an ethnic tribe here in the Bangsamoro area of the Philippines.
Setting foot on this remote island, just wow... I know very little about this place and its people. But before we get immersed and learn about Mapun, we had to get there! This video is our journey to the heart of the Sulu Sea!

Wow, I can't believe it is finally happening! Mapun is the place I've been longing for you to feature for years. It's because this is where my wife grew up to and she has so much great stories she shared with me about it. Her name is diana and she's the sister of Ate Janeth the weaver. Mapun is a place I've been dreaming to visit but I guess it will never happen anymore as I'm undergoing hemodialysis 3x a week now. Randomly browsing through Google Maps, I checked the islands of Tawi-tawi bordering Sabah and got curious about this island literally between the Palawan and the Sulu archipelago. I got more curious about how anyone even gets there. I searched RU-vid to see if I could find anything about Mapun Island, and boom, this vlog came up, which was just uploaded 6 days ago! Kulas, thank you for what you are doing!

Your boat trip with Kumar reminds me of my college days coming and going to and from Manila. Once we encountered a typhoon going back home wherein our boat was smaller. The day after we sailed, I shared the food that I brought with me with fellow passengers that I knew. With the storm brewing hard, we threw out whatever we ate that day. The next day all fasted and endured the storm until it was safe to eat our meals again. After a few days, we finally reached Ozamis City and took a bus to Pagadian City where I grew up.. But I still remember my unforgettable memory of boats.

When you described what you were doing and the time that it was going to take, I thought you and Kumar would be racing to make it to the boat, but you made great time. That's quite a boat ride taking 16 hours.😲 I really liked those boys, and especially the one who told you the boat was having engine failure. So funny!🤣 If ate Janet and Princess are any indication, the women at Mapun must be very beautiful. Maybe Kumar will find a lady for himself there.

Taganak Island in the Municipality of Turtle Islands is only 6 hours away from Mapun....the Municipality is composed of 6 islands forming the Philippine Side of the Turtle Islands group in which Malaysia has 3 on their own..it is the largest Nesting site of Marine Sea Turtles in Southaeast Asia.....

You went with Kumar in Palawan and you went in Tawi-Tawi which they make the Sama Dilao the colorful Matt made from yellowish brown abaca leaf. And on the boat you can see the dolphins jumping on the sea 🌊🌊🌊🐬🐬🐬⛵️ And they even take a car on the boat 🚗➡️⛵️ It is like a ferry speed boat ⛴➡️⛵️ And the kids are in the boat 🧑👱👦 They even had those coffee in the store ☕️ And the car even had a humidifier freshener that is steaming 🚗💨 And the kids teach you how to speak a Tawi-Tawian language. You even had a hot calamanci juice and that is what people drink when they had a cough 🍈🍵
