Even before the arrival of the Spaniards, a passion for singing finally developed. Filipinos like singing when they are working, such as on the farm to get rid of their fatigue and the heat of the sun, or the ladies singing while doing their laundry in the river. Filipinos adore karaoke because singing has become popular in the country, regardless of whether you have a good voice or not, especially during celebrations for singing competitions in the cities. It already exists in our culture.

Being a filipino who lived in England for 35 years I never seen a race that love singing as much as the filipinoes..and a lot of them are very talented.I think the next challenged if we really want to take it to the next stage is to be more creative and original.This is the way how western musicians made their mark in the music industry.we need to offer something different not just being very good at copying.

There is OPM, it just does not appeal to a global audience. Unlike KPOP which somehow has a global audience (but not me, I still dont get KPOP because I do not understand). Maybe the world is not yet ready. Southeast Asia as a group really, is new globally (Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos). I lived in 3 of those countries and they have their own songs which sound very pop and modern but appeal only to a local audience. The Filipinos just stand out because we communicate in English and that is why the West can understand the Filipinos quickly. But culturally, Filipinos are still Southeast Asian - the same way Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, etc, are.
@arembotate4100
@arembotate4100 Год назад
Try searching for original Filipino compositions, English and Filipino lyrics, they sell really well locally. A lot of Filipino composers who have had successful careers. Yeng Constantino has composed a lot of songs and released a couple of EPs that sell - songs with Filipino and English lyrics. Heard of Odette Quesada? She composed a lot of English lyric songs in the 80s/ 90s. They were hits in the Philippines in the 80s and 90s and were competing with songs of the Police, Spandau Ballet, for radio time. Southeast Asia culturally is unheard of outside of the region. But if you live there, then you will realize.

Anyone and anything in the west or anywhere else has nothing to do with our natural desire to sing. Fact is, long before we invented karaoke, we already have this traditional courtship manner we call "harana," where the man, using a guitar sings a love song to the lady he's courting, just outside her residence, mostly at evenings. It's been our custom, our tradition. Most of our OPMs which garnered world recognition and captures the hearts of everyone who hears it, speaks of love towards our country, our people, our family. We sing NOT because of fame or anything else. We sing because we were born with it, the great desire to sing for the Lord's glory, for our homeland, our people. As you may have noticed already, we are the only nation in the world with that innate desire and capability to do so, anytime, anywhere. Which makes me believe that we truly are the people GOD pre-destined to sing new songs for His glory upon His return 😇🤍❤️🕊️💝

It so happen that Filipinos loves to sing, there had been singing contest during the 60's and could be the reason that made Roberto del Rosario a Filipino thought of Inventing the 1st Tribel SAS (Sing Along System) machine. Later was popularized by the Japanese as Karaoke. Roberto del Rosario was a musician and music teacher who played eight instruments. He developed an advanced sing-along-system known as OMB (one-man-band) which was the combination of a music player, voice taping mechanism, tuner and mixer. This sing-along-system (SAS) allowed his students to sing with the recorded music using a microphone and an amplified speaker. The sing-along-system was very popular in the Philippines and Japan. The Japanese coined the system "karaoke" from "kara" meaning empty and "ōkesutora" meaning orchestra.

Yeah, it's all fun and games until someone requests the song "My Way" by Frank Sinatra. Then it's every man for himself. The reason people, especially boomers and those from the working class older generation who are not familiar with the music of the younger generation, fought over the microphone over this song back in the 90s was because it is the easiest male song that can be sung. The key is low enough and the lyrics simple to remember. Any guy wanting to impress the ladies in public would want to pick this one. And if someone beat you to the draw and somehow murdered the song by singing off key in his drunken state, then you have a recipe for chaos inside a packed drinking joint.

@10:54 this lady is ignorant of the main reason why parents enroll their kids for voice lessons. The main reason, first and foremost, is to build confidence in the child. The child opens up to expressing herself in public whether it be a class presentation or speaking in public. Being able to sing in front of people is an accomplishment in itself even though you are not a great singer. Parent's don't expect their kids to become great singers and make them money. That expectation is ridiculous. So I'd would not listen to that lady's mumbling about the reason parents sends their kids for voice lessons.
@gladys8060

May I add w your indulgence: Even before the advent of the Spaniards and other western influences, the Filipinos already were singing, dancing with their native instruments. This is evident in the hinterlands, mountains with practices, rituals by the indigenous peoples or tribes. To this present day, we still find them doing this... Preserving their culture, traditions and crafts being passed down to later generations with their amazing musical instruments!! To say that Filipinos are only good w karaokes is a mistaken perception. (Notwithstanding a Pinoy, Bert del Rosario, who pioneered it as the sing-along in 1975 I think.) Fiesta celebrations eventually evidenced this inherent culture of music, dance and prayer!!
