OK here it is, I've had my hands on this revolutionary LED for a couple weeks now and I have gone through all of the questions that you wanted answered from the first video.
In this deep dive we'll bench test the Philips Coral Care Gen 2 against 250w metal halides, 400w metal halides, various numbers of t5 tubes and some other LEDs for comparison.
We'll look at PAR values at up to 1 meter deep to see if this unit can live up to the lofty claims it makes.
For more information on the Philips Coral Care tests conducted to determine optimum spectrum and par, be sure to check out this paper:

Answered my question on par at depth really well Sam. Thanks so much. Really appreciate the effort you put into this video! Looks like they will suit my build quite well.

Check some of the BRS videos. They've done some extensive testing on various lighting set ups over the years. Not the Phillips though, but a good source of info. They cover the impact of black background as well as reflection from the sides. Also, they did some interesting tests with multiple Kessils showing that evenly mounting 4 of them over a 4 ft tank isn't the best for even par values. Something to do with over lap and reflection. They've found that leaving a larger space between the 2 middle ones have a better spread. I actually rented a par meter from them and confirmed that I needed to jack up to 100% intensity during my plateau and also that spreading them as they suggest improved the even spread of par values. My corals have responded well to this. Great vid. It seems the Phillips may be the only LED solution for a really deep tank. Perhaps 2 of them on a longer tank would give even more interesting numbers due to overlap and reflection. I have to say, I'm kind of surprised the MH numbers weren't higher.
@ParkersReef

Yeah I was a little surprised too. The halides were mounted higher, but they needed to be to get the spread

@johnfitzgerald5158
@johnfitzgerald5158 4 года назад
I just was able to watch it. I was a bit disappointed. It seems Phillips has the spread and blending down pat, but room for improvement in the par department. I also like from a mechanical standpoint no moving parts. I have had a Kessil A360WE eventually fail I believe due to salt creep and dust in the fan and heat sink internally. It would be a nice trend if the other brands removed this weak point. I'm keeping an eye on Ryan's ReefBrite solution.

The 1m results are great considering its in a black container. You saw how much a black back on the glass tank made a difference in reducing refracting light on the back so image off the glass those number could be higher. The price is huge and the only way to get us closer to Europe and the US is to get more people into the hobby something your channel does :D!!
@ParkersReef
@ParkersReef 4 года назад
yeah I'm interested about that - have had a few mention the black glass. I'm curious how that works, wouldn't it still reflect light the same way? The black coating is on the outside? But yes, I was quite surprised at the PAR at depth, mighty impressive!

Why were the halides placed so much higher than the LEDs? They should be tested at the same height to have an apple to apple comparison between the different types of lights.
@ParkersReef
@ParkersReef 4 года назад
yeah that is a good question and a point I should have covered in the video (but didn't!). This tank used to run metal halides on it and that height was what I needed to get it to spread to reach across the full 30 inches of the tank.
@Mike__B
@Mike__B 4 года назад
While I can totally understand the simplicity of it, and not a fan of it, I don't want a warm/cooler slider as if I don't know what I want out of my tank. I want mega royal blue? Let me crank that up to max with no influence from other LEDs. I know Kessil used to do this as well, not sure if they still do this with their fixtures like the AP9x, but there is something to being able to change individual channels to find what you like as far as color even if you're only really going to do it once.
@ParkersReef
@ParkersReef 4 года назад
yeah most modern LED's allow you to play with individual colours, I guess Philips have decided that whilst it might be fun to do so - it really opens up a lot of risk to end users producing a spectrum that is not good for coral growth. It's an approach that definitely won't suit all!

The Coral Care never gets to a T5. An ATI Straton LED can. We compared the ATI against the Coral Care Gen 2, new Redeon and Orphek. Especially between the first lamps there are worlds in between. There is nothing comparable in terms of power, distribution and quality on the market.

Was that a black background on the test tank? I think that may be why the par numbers for the back are lower. It doesn't have the reflection that you get on the front glass. Great video!
@ParkersReef

yeah I'm curious about that. The back wall has a black coating on the outside, would that affect reflection? I wouldn't have thought it could- but the results certainly seem to suggest so!

Hello! I've got a SPS tank with 150x70x45 cm ... Do you think that pannels will be ok or I will need 3 to have a perfect light covering? I'm asking you because once my tank is very shallow, I don't know if 3 will be too much or not with these lights. Thank you !!!!!!!!!

How do the other lighting options compare in cost?
@ParkersReef
@ParkersReef 4 года назад
Great question! You can look up the various lighting options in your local area. Usually halides are cheap, but getting hard to find and use a lot of power. T5 can be expensive to buy and still uses power and replacement tubes LED varies greatly, the ATI Stratton is about the closest competitor to this in my books and costs the same money :)
@DogFacePuffa
@DogFacePuffa 4 года назад
Parkers Reef totally agree! How many years of T5 bulbs would it take to get to $1700AUS$??? I’ve got some math to do!

Yeah that’s fair criticism. But as you say, when has Philips ever released anything “cheap”. For the output, it’s not bad value compared to other brands
@zsxking

If you're looking for Philips to challenge market with cheaper light, you're looking for the wrong player. Just look at price of Philips Hue bulb with basically any other controllable LED bulb. Besides, this fixture is similar to 20 Philip Hue color bulb put together, in both watt and price. So the price is pretty fair IMO.
