Those tapes are amazing! Like huge audio cassette tapes with a flipper dipper on top!

There was even a plan for a mini v2000 cassette, similar to VHS-C, which would also be played in normal video devices using an adapter by pulling the mini cassette apart into the adapter.

That would have been so cool.

Had one of these for a short time, when they were current models. As quirky as most of the v2000 models were. The only thing that sticks in my mind, is that when the cassette housing is ejected it comes up parallel with the player & exposes the open back where a very sharp, flat spring is present to push the cassette forward when it’s loaded. I sliced my finger on it & bled profusely, immediately putting me off it. I’d recommend keeping your fingers well away from it while the cassette compartment is open. Good luck with the repair, v2000 isn’t the easiest format to work on but I look forward to seeing your next video on it. Rob.

Thanks for the information I'll keep an eye out for that.

Wow lovely machine, I am fascinated with V2000, it benefits from being the most developed analogue SD video format and the dual sided cassettes and the integrated tracking are just 10/10 - lmao at that snarky review of the system, I guess Philips didn't pay them enough to be nice. Everything 4/5 stars except portability and therefore 3 stars in conclusion. Mentioning incredibly useful innovation like "dynamic track following" in the same breath as "four digit electronic counter" goes a long way to show the reviewer isn't very serious. Look forward to see the follow up video!

The system was ahead of its time. A very interesting format. It's made me want another full size home deck.

my uncle worked for Philips UK and gave me one of the4se when i moved to my first rented flat , it was brilliant BUT the tapes were like rocking horses and even Tottenham court road was a bust ( back in 1985) so i only had the two he gave me i also got a CDi player off him and a digital cassette deck all having the same problem , great formats but lack of disposables and titles

I just read an article from 1986 talking about the format being dead. Production ceased in 1985 but machines could still be bought in Germany in 1986.

@@RetroGadgetMan it's a shame because for the time it was at least on a par with beta for picture quality
@RetroGadgetMan

Yes it was and still is an amazing system. The heads could be electronically manoeuvred to keep better track of the tape. Sony ended up using this system in there later betamax machines as they gained access to this technology when they had a joint venture with Philips to produce the compact disc player.

@@RetroGadgetMan I should say that V2000 picture quality is not all it's cracked up to be by its enthusiasts. There was always a lot of video noise, the image is more like VHS on a bad day than Beta on a good day. Sony did use the technology but not on domestic Betamax, they used it on professional BetacamSP. There may have been a bit more licensing or skulduggery going on because it also appears on the failed Panasonic MII system, which tried to compete with BetacamSP but didn't get far.

I knew someone that had a stereo Grundig video 2000 in '85 with matching stereo tv , i remember it spent more time being repaired than recorded on.

You might have seen my videos on these and the related non-portable machine: Philips VR2220 and VR2324 machines playlist: ru-vid.com/group/PLhKYgBM5T9vbxRgaia1cMrL6uSLYvPzHx You will need some patience and a great deal of luck. They are ghastly machines to work on, the models were constantly evolving so service manuals and machines rarely match perfectly, parts are unobtainable (ICs and thick film circuits fail) and boards from scrap machines are frequently incompatible. You might get lucky and only have minor faults, but don't count on it. If you need a tricky part, I may have something on a scrap machine.

Hi thanks for the links. I actually started watching one of your videos today. I was devastated about the machine from Sweden. It really was smashed up. I thought mine was bad enough. Reading your other comments it's probably not looking good for my machine. Haes to imagine so many different incompatibles between the same models. With Japanese machines I have been lucky sometimes with swapping out boards. I will have to watch your other video on this machine. Fingers crossed and again thanks for the information and help.

I've been a fan of Video 2000 for a long time and I still have some players from the days, but it's become impossible to repair them or have them repaired. There's no chance to get new rotating tape drums or have the heads repaired.

The only hope is finding a doner machine that is not worn out

Apart from my little stash of new old stock VR2020/VR2021 heads! But they are not the machines which most people want to repair.

@@RetroGadgetMan The problem is that parts are not always interchangeable, Philips never stopped modifying the boards. I'm not sure I've ever seen two the same. Which all implies that they were not ready for production when they were released.
