Questions about how many times you need to grind to clear a previous grind size or bean change prompted this video. This shows the grinder location relative to the chute that drops grounds into the brewing assembly. A Phillips Service technician told me it can take a couple of grinds to clear the contents of this chute.

A well thought out short video that answers so many questions and fills in the blanks about the grinder. Thanks.

Hi Bryan, thanks for your great videos. I'm curious, have you ever taken the machine apart to clean it besides the weekly & monthly cleaning needed? I found fruit fly pupae in mine even though I clean it regularly & now I'm grossed out to use it cuz I can't get into the other half of the machine to clean it. Help!

I'm an independent service technician for coffee machines in the Netherlands for several brands. Most brands like this Philips have way less than 1 grind cycle retention. Probably about half a grind cycle. I haven't measured the amount in grams but it's certainly not several grind cycles. I might measure it precisely in the future but these grinders don't need a lot of servicing so that'll take a while.
@BryanKlein
@BryanKlein 2 года назад
That would be super helpful to know for sure. I was trying to do it myself with some light and dark grounds to see if there is a difference, but I couldn't tell for sure when one was fully changed into the other. What would be nice is a teardown of a machine like this that measured the 'volume' and 'density' that the chute can hold, we could then take the weight of a grind and calculate how many of that amount of mass would be required to pass a full chute.
@timbovision

That would be amazing to know. Feel a little cheated that we're getting day old grinds in our coffee!

Hey Bryan, just got my 3200 and the espresso and coffee is really weak and the pucks watery. I know the machine takes a while to settle in, but how long should I wait before thinking it's a problem? I use the finest grind setting, the highest aroma setting and the middle water volume setting.
@BryanKlein
@BryanKlein 3 года назад
I find that a more 'medium' grind works better in this machine. I know that a 'fine' grind should expose more surface area to the water and increase the 'strength' of the coffee, but I haven't had that experience. I don't know how the grinder knows how long to grind for based on aroma and grind settings. Also, for me, the beans I use have the most significant difference in the perceived strength of the coffee. I tend to go with medium-roast espresso beans that do not have a lot of surface oils on them.

It says in the manual that if you change the settings on the grinder you need to make about 3 cups of coffe before the new setting is fully operational. This is probably because there is residue from the old settings left over as you say.

Just a question , has anyone here managed to go over 20 seconds extraction time. I guess the grinder needs to be calibrated , but haven't seen a video how to get a finer grind when you have already set the knob to 1 (finest)

So what number is considered coarse and fine? Is 1 considered fine? Also what setting would you prefer on this machine? I noticed one of your comments said 5 or 6.

1 = most fine and 12 = most coarse, you should see that the dots change size from 1 smallest to 12 largest to indicate grind size.

@@BryanKlein thanks for your reply. So you prefer to set it around 5-6? Just got this machine today.
@BryanKlein
@BryanKlein 3 года назад
@@davebibi5 it does depend a bit on what drink you are making and how much 'flavor' and 'water volume' you select. But 5-6 is where I have left it for a while and I like the flavor. I usually make 'Americano' and 'Coffee' I'd say the coffee option I use more, which does pass more water through the grounds than the espresso shots for the Americano.

I will be getting the same Philips 3200 Lattego on Friday and it will be brewing/making drinks at least 20 per days, do you think Philips 3200 Latte go will sustain the use of 20/30 drinks/day? I will be ready to return the unit if it fails during the stress tests (we have family re-unions and youth members will start drinking quiet lot of Cappuccino drinks)
@BryanKlein
@BryanKlein 2 года назад
We make something like 4 double serving drinks per day at a minimum and I've been doing that since I got it back in December 2019. There will be a lot of water refills and grounds dumped per day, but if people know how to do it when the red lights come on it shouldn't be an issue. I look forward to your report on the test.

@@BryanKlein Thank you for the response. Quick question since you've already been using the unit. the Aquaclean filter...is it required to installed, plugged in the Aquafilter in the water tank? I asked because I do not feel that I need it since my water is being filtered at 1st level Aquasana Whole House (filtration and then softener) , 2nd level 6-stage Reverse Osmosis, 3rd level Kangen LevelukSD501 (mostly mineralized and increased to PH9.0hz although water also goes through another filter at this level).

Hi Bryan! How do you find the beverages this makes? I've heard some people say it's a bit watery compared to other machines? I've also heard about mold issues inside? I'm considering this vs the Brera or the Lirika Plus and am having a heck of a time making a decision. Thanks
@BryanKlein
@BryanKlein 3 года назад
I can't speak for the other machines, but we've used this one to make at least two drinks almost everyday for more than a year now. Rough estimate is a bit over 1000 beverages. I feel like it was a great purchase. I think settings such as volume of water, grind and the bean selection can have a significant impact on the output of the machine. I can say I've found beans and settings that deliver beverages that I enjoy. Espresso shots are rich and flavorful, and it's hard to tell with anything else if it is too watery, because other components are added (water and/or milk). If I neglect to keep the interior clean on a regular basis, then I have seen a bit of mold forming in the warm, moist residue of the grounds. But that is more about how well I maintain the unit than the machine itself. I also live in the Pacific Northwest USA, where environmental molds are more prevalent.
@BryanKlein
@BryanKlein 3 года назад
I looked at the other machines, and I would say that the convenience and the quality of the LatteGo milk system would put it over the top compared to the others. If you only make Espresso, Lungo, and Americano styles then it matters less, but for Macchiato and Cappuccino style, you will be glad to have the LatteGo.

I just got my 3200 and love it so far. I have never used beans or a grinder. My question is about the grinder. When I look at the top of the grinder knob the 1 is at the top and of coarse the 12 is at the bottom. Where is the notch to show where you stop the knob on the setting I would want? I haven’t touched it yet since I have started using it ...but I honestly don’t know if I’m drinking a 1 or a 12 since I’m not sure where the point is that you stop for your desired strength. I know it’s a silly question but info would be so helpful since I’m a newbie on a grinder.

Got this machine today and I'm very disappointed, the coffee looks and tastes weak and watery (I'm using premium beans so it's not the coffee, also tried cheap ones), the foam is very thin and goes away as I take one or 2 sips, and since I know the taste of the coffee that these beans can produce, this machine is miles away of producing the same flavour.

It does take a few grinds/brews to get settled (about 2 weeks for me) and develop consistency in the brew, and to get my grind and volume settings dialed in. Having said that, depending on how you have brewed in the past, it might be very different.
