I was the Bassist for Harold Melvin and The Bluenotes (5 yrs.) until he passed away in 1997. At that point, I became Bassist for Billy Paul and The Delfonics. I was also Bassist/Music Director for Sharon Paige, after she and Teddy Pendergrass left The Bluenotes. I currently own a small independent Label and have released two original tracks of my own. Harold Melvin was a excellent singer, he just didn't sound like Teddy. Listen to Harold on "To Be True" and you'll know for certain he sings very well. Just because Teddy had a strong distinct voice you can't knock Harold.

Wow all of those guys have passed on. As a kid growing up in the 70's I do remember the Blue Notes. "Wake up everybody" and "I hope that we could be together soon" was 2 of my favorites. When Teddy Pendergrass left the group he took the hits with him. Pendergrass solo career was amazing. He really had to go solo to get all of that great music that he shared with the world as a solo artist. His live performances are legendary with his female audiences. Thanks for sharing the history on these guys. I pray that they all are RIP. Peace out.

Yelp. That was one of the reasons Teddy Pendergrass left. Harold Melvin was stingy with the money. Had he paid Teddy right, just maybe all of that success Teddy had as a solo artist could been shared with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. I seen a picture of Teddy and Harold singing on stage after Teddy was in his wheel chair.

0:53 is “My Hero”, their debut single for what would later become as Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, and it was first introduced in the opera “The Chocolate Soldier” in 1908, and it was first recorded by Lucy Marsh and released in 1910. Many opera singers covered the song over the years including Deanna Durbin, Anna Moffo, Jeanette MacDonald, Ralph Flanagan, and dozens more as well as this one by the Blue Notes. Unfortunately, “My Hero” peaked at #19 on the R&B charts and #76 on the Hot 100 charts, but it was an error that says “Didn’t Chart”, but we’ll give them credit as their first R&B hit.

Very interesting. I admit I don't know a lot about this group. But I have watched old clips, interviews. I don't think Harold Melvin was a bad singer, but Teddy did give the group a stronger voice. I guess if you don't know me by now. Probally was the first song I remembered hearing. Yes I heard the stories. I don't think teddy replaced Harold. I think he just stepped up when Harold missed shows. Yes I've seen the clip of teddy on Dina shore, where he explained he was not Harold Melvin. She asked where was Mr Melvin, teddy shrugged his shoulders and said he didn't know. But didn't Teddy leave the group before Harold Melvin died. Yes I've seen Teddys Biography. I love going back looking at new groups. True. Harold Melvin and the Blue notes, nobody ever talk about. Fact I didn't even know at first when Harold Melvin passed. I agree this group is indeed Unsung. It was good for come here and get more facts. I remembered asking where Harold Melvin was Buried, but nobody could tell me, I thought that was sad. That's not to say that, there were a lot who spoke up for Harold Melvin and the Group.RIP to Harold Melvin and all the members of the group that has passed on. Thank you for doing this. The more you know, the less ignorant we are.👍✌. Love,respect and positivity always. Neita james. 🙂🤗🖖👋.

You made it clear that you didnt know much about this group . . . . . Teddy didn't "step up when Harold missed shows"______Harold HIRED Teddy. First as the drummer for the group, and then after hearing sing____made him the featured vovcalist. You'll see postings all over the boards that Harold 'hated' Teddy, or that he was jealous, blah,blah,blah. Nothing could be further from the truth. Any division between members of the group and Harold was over money, which is typical of this rotten industry. Teddy's way out was to go solo, like so many artists.
@carolynbratton5508
@carolynbratton5508 Год назад
I agree that members of this group had reason to leave as Harold Melvin was not treating them fairly. But, in general, when lead singers leave, the other group members sometimes have a hard time making it and usually end up breaking. I admire Levi Stubbs as he made it a point to stay with Four Tops to keep group together. Wish more groups would take note.

Let’s face it until Teddy joined them they were nothing special and when he left they were nothing special again. Teddy was the whole group, he was always going to leave. He was just on the verge of superstardom in 1982 when that horrific car crash ruined his career it took all the power out of his incredible voice, he was never the same after that.
