If I’m not mistaken, Technoblade was the one that suggested the idea to Phil. 'Cause Techno said he had no problem with Ranboo. Phil agreed and went with it
I also love how Phil recently made it canon that he had wings when he first joined the server, but damaged them beyond repair while protecting Wilbur from the explosion (like SAD-ist’s animation). Man was willing to do so much for his son but was still made to kill him anyways. I can only imagine the grief he’s been through. But yeah, this is such a great video my guy!! You put it so much better than I ever could. Keep up the amazing work!
There's a line in Philza's Doomsday stream where he says he's anti government or something like that and both Puffy and Jack yell at him, asking where that came from And Philza just snaps back "SINCE I HAD TO KILL MY SON YOU IDIOTS!!" I think you explained his character and motivations perfectly
A lot of people really don't go into that quote very much. Most see it as Phil revolting because he killed Wilbur but it could also mean that he saw how the government corrupted Wilbur and others causing him to kill Wilbur
Jack:"also philza since when were you a dickhead" Phil:"I'm not a big fan of government" Jack:"SINCE WHEN!!!" PHIL"SINCE I WAS FORCED TO KILL MY SON YOU IDIOTS!!!"
I can't express how much I love Philza as a character because of his calm yet so undeniably chaotic energy. This video is so fucking cool! Also, him making it canon that he has wings, but they damaged during the explosion? So poggers.
@Mia P. I think was SAD-ist (great animator) who animated Phil with wings, that got damaged (so much he can't use them) by explosion while protecting Will (in the animation "Drawn of 16th"). After that Phil took it as the canon reason why he doesn't have wings. But he also says in one of his steams that when he looses he only canon life, he wants to ask Dream if he can have wings and just build cool things. So yes, I love the canon reason for Phil's wings and the idea of ghost-Phil having wings.
@@ittybittykibibyte He talks about it in the video titled "Philza talks about his last canon life on Dream SMP" it's a clip from the stream. But yes, in the clip he says the canon reason for not having wings and that it is his wish to have wings after he looses his only canon life (he also tells us why he is the only one on the Dream SMP who has omly one canon life). I think it is a great idea, I hope it comes true if or when he looses his canon life.
I think that, all things considered, there's one key thing to remember. His name is Philza Minecraft, and he's quite old. He's married to a woman, and that is interesting. Technoblade wears a golden crown. I am massive, I am massive. Wilbur Soot is a musician. He sings about women, which I find cool. Technoblade wears a gown. In the gown, he doesn't own knives.
I never really thought of him that way. When I watched Wilbur’s doomsday stream and saw Ghostbur’s meltdown, I immediately saw Phil as the villain. I never really considered what he’d been through, being forced to kill his own son, being taken advantage of, scammed. This video helped remind me that he’s still a human person, and has similar ideals as Ranboo. In the end, people matter. Not silly countries.
he has the same ideals as ranboo and eret, eret has said that the people matter, while ranboo also has said that the people matter, and that "You shouldn't choose sides, choose people." Really cool, all of them are good too
I remember what he went through, but I still see him as a villain. If he wanted to value people more, then why would he destroy everything that they owned? Destroy the home that they fought and gave their lives for so that they could be safe and happy? He seems to forget that while yes, the government of the nation has hurt him, by destroying the country, he traumatized and hurt the people of the nation more than they ever hurt him.
@@katangel115 Things government did to Philza: 1. Put him on house arrest and threatening to kill him 2. They went after (and tried to kill) one of Phil’s friends 3. They betrayed one of Phil’s friends 4. He had to kill his own son (if the government didn’t exist Wilbur would most likely still be alive) Also, I’m fairly sure nobody is just a villain on the SMP, they all have their reasons, including Dream
"Philza, the angel of death, is what happens when you break a good man." Chills.. I got chills. Thank you so much for making this, Phil is often represented as evil or even not represented at all. He's incredibly underrated as a RU-vidr and so is his character. People need to recognize him more.
there are somethings that phil said in doomsday he said stuff like: government corrupts and then someone asked something like "since when were you teamed with techno" and he said "since i had to kill my son"
“Since when we’re you teamed with techno “ “not a fan of government “ - philza “ since when Phil “ “ since I was forced to kill my own son , you idiot, when do you learn “ - philza That’s the order
I kinda feel like philza didn't necassarilly snap, its just he teamed with techno, who in my opinion also didn't snap. he's put in a bad light and i don't necessarily think he has gone evil.
Philza snapping would be terrifying. Have you seen him in SMPearth? You know, the thing that is partly canon to the dsmp story line? Angel of Death, am I right?
@@mirenayuki8821 dude, Philza ACTUALLY Snapping would be so awesome and cool(to me since he’s my favorite CC and character) but that would also be fricking terrifying towards the enemy
THIS!! A lot of people I’ve talked to seem to think that Philza is only this irresponsible and lazy father figure with no reason or sense behind his actions, but I think he is so much more than that. He was forced to kill his own son who was corrupted by the government they worked so hard to build. I believe he was overcome by grief and vowed to take down the force that destroyed his son.
YESSSS !!! PHILZA IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS AND THE AMOUT OF HATE HE GETS FROM THE FANDOM IS SO UNDESERVED like??? The man joins the server and tries to talk his son out of basically suicide- the “could have done better” comments rly rub me the wrong way bc taking someone down is already traumatic to do to a stranger let alone your own son bc normal people are not trained for that. Also i think wilbur saying “they all want you (to kill me)” would make sense bc what if phil didnt kill him? They would also kill wilbur for blowing up lmanberg anyways (see: techno’s execution). Also i dont think Philza knew that his own son was on one life? So The fandom expects him to take everyone under his wing, albeit reluctantly (bc he was recovering from the death of his own son) he tries to form a good relationship w his grandson and tries to be at peace with the country is son formed but sought to destroy, they arrested him for associating with his friend (ok understandable bc hes a terrorist) but they didnt have to vandalize his property and search his house??? Thats literally an abuse of power?? I interpret his brushing off of ghostbur bc its hard to be around him and he doesnt really consider that him his son and more of a parody of what wilbur used to be that reminds him of his actions. He does care for the ghost but ngl if i was him id go mental when the ghost of my son who i killed followed me around ok. Fuck that His (and techno’s) actions (doomsday) aren’t particularly good as a whole but thats what he saw as the greater good. He and techno are the same like that. It doesnt matter if other people hate them for doing what they think what the greater good is or how they get to it. The results matter. I mean it kinda did work? No country = no abuse of power (also dream is in jail so thats a bonus). I think the fandom has just a tendency to set unrealistic expectations for explicitly confirmed morally gray characters. Like haha assigned dad now, assigned father: is flawed, ur bad, and repeat (see sam nook). Great video btw!
This is one of the best analysis I have ever seen of Philza's character. Many people, when analyzing his character usually reduce him as a "bad parental figure" which is simply wrong since he is much more than that. Your video was straight to the point, your facts were clear and easy to understand, the examples and the images you showed while explaining were simply perfect. Keep up the amazing work!! You got a new subscriber!!!
I feel like we should still remember that Phil said that his relationship with Dream was only business and that he didn't agree with anything Dream stood for
A really cool addition to his character that he talked about on stream is that he had wings (elytra) before the pogtopia war, but he shielded wilbur from the explosion with those wings, losing them, and when he does lose his one life, he'll get the wings back and make really cool builds as a ghost.
i think it would be interesting if he could get his own elytra, after doing something to repair them, but can not use fireworks, just glide like how ranboo has silk touch hands, it would be a cool addition to the storyline
I’m so glad you made this. PHILZAS character is so underrated, it’s sad. Having someone make an analysis on him just brings me so much joy. Many others can say the same thing. His complex character makes him have a sort of secret character arc.
You should do this again on the lesser popular people on the smp like quakity nihach captain puffy and fundy the onse that have a sad story and interesting charecters but dint get as much spotlight
I find their stories so interesting but they usually aren't in the main story so it's harder to catch up on their character without missing something big
"Philza, the Angel Of Death" is such a cool and fitting title for this man. considering hes probably one of my favorite characters in the smp, im really happy hes getting noticed more!! this video was put together amazingly and i cant wait to see your channel grow bro, gg.
dude I adore this analysis so much. lots of people misunderstand phil's character when they don't take into account how he really does have legitimate reasons to believe that government is the evil that corrupted all of his loved ones. I would love to see an analysis on fundy or quackity because I think theyre some of the most tragic characters on the server and are often overlooked :') great analysis!!
I saw a reddit post talking about why exactly did wilbur blow up l'manburg (and the real wilbur seemed to agree with it). it says ofc, he was driven to insanity because of it, but he still has a little bit of sanity left in him to care about others, he had to sacrifice his beloved country, and his friends trusts, to FREE his friends from what he built and wanted them to finally be safe from it. he saw how much it corrupted them and himself, he had to blow it up, he puts on a facade that looks like he doesn't care, and only wanted his country. but in reality, he just wanted his friends to be safe, but because he saw how hurt they were, he felt hurt as well, and that's when his last sanity went away. he went insane for his friends, and destroyed the one thing he cared about, and destroyed the very thing that his friends also cared about to save them. just like phil
I really enjoy Philza's character and how he has developed even aside from the dream smp I like watching his streams. Philza is a light hearted funny guy
“There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.” Philza was completely justified in everything he did and ill die on this hill.
Ohhhhhh snap, this is so cool!!! I honestly have been missing an analysis like that for Philza, because everyone seems to focus on the SBI dynamic and forgets that it isn't canon on Dream SMP (his only son is Wilbur and Techno is just an old friend). I even went to read some comments before writing mine and caught many people pointing how Philza didn't give Tommy support... BUT THEY HAVE NOTHING IN COMMON!!! Yeah, helping rebuilding L'Manberg was really cool, but that wasn't enough to bring them together! Philza was closer to Tubbo than Tommy, and that didn't make difference when he decided that L'Manberg wasn't a good place anymore! Now, if he'll get more corrupted with time, that's a probability I'd love to watch, considering how chaotic he can be! Touching the Egg and immediately deciding to make an omelette out of it may be a first step!
I loved your analisys! Phil is a really interesting character that a lot of people sleep on :( Same with Fundy imo, so I'd like to see an analisys for him (a lot of characters on the SMP are underapreciated tho)
Subscribing because someone finally doesn’t just see Philza as a bad father, but as a broken man who snapped due to the people around him. Much respect ✊
Phil is like the most rational and sane person in the entire SMP. In roleplay and IRL, he's that guy everyone's friends with. He hangs around Techno, his canonical son, because he's the most reasonable and chill to be with.
Commenting for the algorithm. But I never could really wrap my head around it when people says Phil is a bad father figure and a shitty person/character. He's been through a lot and evolution behind his decision-making has clear, logical roots. He's couldn't intervene in many of the situations he was in because he either A) wasn't on the server, or B) wasn't written in to have a role in many of those scenarios.
He’s definitely not a bad character, but he is a bad father figure. With Wilbur he didn’t show up until Wilbur had completely lost his mind and while not being written in or on the server might explain that, within the story itself that’s still a character that wasn’t there for his son until he was about to do something terrible. Then you look at him and Tommy and while it’s kind of unclear if Tommy’s canonically his son, if he is he’s a terrible father to Tommy. He’s just never there, always off with his best friend no matter what Tommy goes through. Especially since Tommy and Wilbur are such big figures involved in so much, his lack of guidance and parenting for them stands out. Plus, Tommy desperately needs a mentor and assuming Phil is his father that’s Phil’s responsibility. I don’t think Phil is a bad character, I think flaws make him much more interesting as a character but he isn’t a good father based off of what we’ve seen on the smp. Personally I think not taking responsibility for things is one of those flaws and part of him not being a good father. He can blame government as much as he wants, but his sons/people he’s mentored are terrorists in the case of Wilbur and Techno, and in the case of Tommy a persistent trouble maker who rarely earns anything he gets.
Furthermore, while he does think through things logically he’s often pretty biased against more emotional figures because of that. He’s very loyal to figures who are similar minded to him like Techno and Ranboo but with others he never really seems to understand their decisions to guide them or fix anything. He couldn’t fully understand l’manberg’s issue with Techno so instead of negotiating or guiding he bombed it to bedrock. By the end of that bombing nearly everybody was traumatized because he couldn’t understand the emotional ties to things enough to help guide others to be more logical. I do think the fandom tends to focus too much on his flaws, myself included. But at least personally it’s because he never seems to get called out for his flaws by other characters, and in general I think his being seen as a father figure to popular characters leads to a focus on his relationships with those characters like Wilbur and Tommy, that relationship being less than stellar
i really like how you summarized philza's character in the smp, he has been seen as a villain by a lot because he was a "bad father", but think about it, his first day there, he had to kill his son, and people mentioned how he didn't care about tommy, but he mentioned already that he has no right to meddle with his sons' lives because it's their life not his, they can be free, rather than being lenient, it was more on trusting that they'll do good (which they mostly fcked up), tommy does not really care about him much too, all he wants is to get his discs back, people were also angry because he doesn't care about ghostbur's feelings, he has always went along with whatever ghostbur wanted to do, he just doesn't care about friend much because well, it's just a sheep, and there are other much more important things he needs to focus on, the reason why he is on Techno's side is not just because they go way back, but also because Techno respects his decisions, is willing to die for him, and is against the place that made him kill his son, it's not playing favorites, it's called knowing what he wants, and it is to stop the government that has only been corrupt ever since it was established as a government.
Please make this a series! I know obviously techno’s a popular character as well but I would like to see one about him especially with what he said during the bombing of L’manburg and his past with betrayals he kinda revealed when against tommy and no one has really talked about it. Of course, you don’t have to do techno next and I feel like any character analysis besides dream and ranboo right now is needed in the community :) can’t wait to see where you go!
"There are three things all wise men fear: The sea in a storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man" - Patrick Rothfuss, Wise Man's Fear
I didn't realize how deep Phil's character is, you've completely changed my perspective. Great job on this, both the analysis and the presentation are perfect! Got a sub from me! Good luck growing your channel (not that you'll need it)
This helped me understand his character a lot more, honestly. I always knew deep down he was a good character, I just never put it into thought that he was corrupted by watching his children fall into madness.
this was great!!! you covered a lot of very good points I often see overlooked like his grief and his reactions to betrayals. I think an interesting note most people don't realize is that when Philza is introduced, he is regarded as gentle and peaceful man brought on to maintain and mend the server. People are unaware of his ability to bring about chaos because the only person who completely remembers the antarctic empire is Techno, Philza only remembers fragments as shown in his book "Arrival". Doomsday was his first time really partaking in the violence he was once known for smp earth, he avoided festivals and events for a reason. It was delightful seeing such a well made video on one of my favorite characters on the smp, you did a wonderful job and I hope to see more content from you :)!!
Woah I was expecting this guy to have tons and tons of subs, but it seems like this guy is underrated. Everyone subscribe and like this guy deserves it. Keep up the good work man!
That makes lots of sense and we can also see Philza's influence on people who reciprocate the same ideals like Ranboo and Technoblade. Ranboo had a speech before L'manburg was covered in TNT and Withers that resonated with the ideal that people are important not government, power, disc, items, historical places... it's the people. Technoblade had a moment when Tommy turned his back on Technoblade for the discs he said "that discs aren't people"
Thanks for the video and it's good to know i'm not the only person who thought that philza's character had some much depth than some give him credit for. Also, i loved that you called him by his nickname in SMPEARTH, "The angel of death" is rarely used and is such a powerful title
I can assure you, people commenting on your video really helped with the algorithm! Just saw this on my feed and decided to watch, this is nicely done!
I found this video on incognito mode few days ago, and forgot to leave a comment so... I agree. To me, Philza is more interesting in the smp as he is given one canon life, being the most sane character besides awesamdude and captain puffy, being the father of insane children who lost their sanity, (Fundy and Wilbur, like father like son I guess) some that lost a fair share of their sanity and a friend of someone who also lost some of his sanity (idk if Technoblade is his son or friend,I forgot). Plus, getting threatened by his son, his grandson and their gang seems kinda interesting. Basically my thoughts on the dream smp universe. Also Philza is old.
I’m so glad you made this video, Philza is a highly underrated character, he’s one of my favourites but a lot of people don’t recognise him as much in the smp lore Also, this is a very well made video!
@@scrawls I forgot to say but, I just wanted to mention that this is a very well made video. I love the editing, writing, everything about it. Keep making more!!
@@scrawls Also, I heavily referenced this video on an english assignment i’m working on about character descriptions (i chose to write about phil). Thanks man :)
Thank you for watching the video! I'd really appreciate you hitting the like button and subscribing if you enjoyed! Also, which Dream SMP character would you want me analyze next? Ranboo? Tommy? Techno? Someone else? Please let me know!
Is actually like to argue that Philza isn’t empathetic at all and that’s one of his main flaws. Not only that, but Phil is incapable of take responsibility for his actions. Point 1: Phil isn’t empathetic While I do feel Phil has some level of understanding for others, it only reaches to a certain extent. He understands what how Techno feels, being betrayed by the people supposed to care about him, but Phil can’t understand Tubbo’s side. He’s what I called “empathetically bias” he’s empathic to Techno and his problems but has no empathy for Tubbo and his problems. I think if Phil had been empathic to Tubbo and the Butcher Army, he’d be able to understand why they wanted revenge and maybe even talked to Tubbo to try and convince him to stop. Do I think the Butcher Army was in the right? No, not at all. They should have let Techno rest, but if Phil really was empathic I think he would have stepped in and tried to talk to Tubbo. Even if Tubbo didn’t listen, Phil would at least have known he tried his best to stop him. Point 2: Phil cannot take responsibility for his actions. Phil killed Wilbur, no doubt about that. Phil is the one who decided to kill Wilbur, while the government had a hand to play in Wilbur’s insanity, it was entirely Phil’s decision to kill Wilbur. However, Phil constantly blames the government, saying it turns people corrupt. While this is true to some degree, Wilbur also had mental health issues and his refusal to open up to those who were there for him and his selfishness is what, in the end, caused his down fall. Thanks for coming to my TEDTalk. I think Phil is an interesting character and I’m excited to see where he takes his character from here
I didn't realize how much I needed this. I've also been writing an analysis of characters in the SMP, and Phil has been my favorite character to write about. You brought up some points that I hadn't considered, and they mix well with my thoughts as well. Thanks so much!
I really enjoy it when people do analysis on the characters and their past, as well as their motives and how that ties into the story and lore, keep up the great work!
This video is very well made! Would you consider making one about Punz as well? I think his character is quite interesting. I can't wait to see more of your videos, you've earned a subscriber :)
You know, I’ve never thought about analyzing Punz, but the more I think about it, the more interesting he seems. Thank you for the suggestion and the compliment! I’ll definitely consider doing a video on him.
My favorite thing about Ph1LzA is that despite his emotional quotes and scenes during that time he usually smiles the entire time which shows how much he’s enjoying the roleplay
AHH philza's character always been my favorite from the day he joined the SMP i'm really glad someone notice his character,i really enjoyed this, can't wait for my other favorite character to be in this series ^o^
8:21 when philza looks down at the arrows laying at his feet you can feel the energy pouring from him...the energy that asks, "Is all of this worth it?"
Also for the argument for Philza destroying L'manburg would be that L'Manburg as a nation is just another material possession, land and buildings. It isn't the people who run it, and it had directly corrupted them. Philza is like the anti-Tommy, he sticks to his morals, is always helpful, and most importantly, focuses on connections, rather than Tommy's focus on possessions!
Im currently drawing a comic of the smp, so I had to think about his character a lot as well. He’s (the character’s) such a complicated person and it’s so tragic to see a person fall apart as his family does as well
This video is very well put together, and it gives a lot of insight as to why Phil acts the way he does in the DSMP. A lot of people either don't have time, or don't really care enough, to watch his POV which leads to a lot of misunderstandings surrounding the character. So thank you so much for making a video analysis on it! I bet you have helped a lot of people see things from a different perspective, and I can guarantee a lot of Philza fans appreciate it.
Philza acts like Philza, that's what makes dream smp members great, there is a tiny bit of a script, yes, but it doesn't decide many things, one of them being the character's personalities
Not related to this video but I have a theory. What if the egg had dream under its control the whole time and that's why dream was acting all evil and stuff and now that he is in the prison which is made out of obsidian he is returning back to normal cuz he seems much more friendly than before
I haven't finished yet but I'm so relieved to see some appreciation for Philza's character, because he's the character that I find the most interesting but it seems like he's usually overlooked. Great work with this!
i like your character analysis! for that you earned a sub. also, Tommy and Tubbo’s relationship with Philza was never confirmed yet on the lore. in his eyes, Tommy was just his son’s friend who he build the government with .. and Tubbo was Tommy’s friend. Philza received a lot of hate during doomsday for what he did but people didn’t realize that they barely interacted in the lore and barely know each other to care. He just finished his son’s unfinished symphony.
Bro you should definitely do like a series of all the characters who are not really noticed in the lore and point out all there cool important lore and role in the smp! Like fundy, Niki, ponk, and others even if some don’t have much lore at all, like George who doesn’t really have lore at all. but you can still do a bit because connection like dream!
I think the Quote 'Either Die A Hero Or Live Long Enough To See Yourself Become The Villain' fits Philza with some changes need to the quote to fully fit his character
ahhh your analysis just made me tear up bruhhhhh. been wanting to see someone at least talk about Phil’s character so far in the story and this was so good mate!
bro after I watch this vid I thought this channel was over 20K sub or something. (it was 914 sub) I can feel that this channel is going to be really famous soon. I think you will get 5K really soon maybe a week.
I think Phil was proud of Tommy when he realized what he’s become when he said that the Discs were more valuable than Tubbo, and the fact that Tommy regretted what he said and what he was
Since Phil's character is old and immortal in the plot, I like to think that he cares about living creatures and humans but can't create bonds because their lives are so short. He wanted to give all his knowledge about the world to someone. That's why Wilbur was born at first. But as the time went by Philza understood that he cared about Will. He cared about him as his SON and not some memory box or something like that. When Phil saw his son, clearly insane and pleading to end his life, he didn't know what to do. But he remember how much Wilbur cared for L'manburg and thought that saving it would make his son happy. That's why the sacrifice was made. Phil thought what, since he outlived so many people, he could live thought Will's death and still care for other people. But later Philza became more and more disappointed. The grief suddenly hit him. The bond was broken. His only close friend was wanted. People seemed to stop caring about each other...and he didn't have anymore inner powers to care for them, to excuse their behavior. That's when he snapped.
