Photo Adventure: Aperture Priority on a Trip to Hilton Head Island and Pisgah National Forest

I decided to use a Nikon D600 and aperture priority on a trip to Hilton Head Island and the Pisgah National Forest (Max Patch Mountain). ALL shots in this video were taken in RAW with aperture priority. I only captured images during my last day at Hilton Head before heading to the Pisgah Nation Forest.
Why aperture priority? I like the ability to control depth of field and simply enjoy it:). I leverage manual mode as well for various creative and night shots, but mainly stay with aperture. Shutter priority is good as well when needing to focus more on shutter speed, but I tend to control the shutter speed via the aperture:).

Hope you are doing well. Thank you so much for keeping the fire of creativity going. It is great to see you out and bring such inspirational images and adventures once again. Would love your thoughts around computational photography and shrinking form factors. How does that, in your view, change the learning curve and the future game? Also, would love to learn the general settings you'd recommend to capture wildlife (especially, birds) in action. Look forward to hearing your thoughts.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld Год назад
Good to see your post/feedback!:) Computational photography and the future state might require a video:). The reason sales have dropped-off for entry level gear is due to advancements in technology and related programmatic efforts. Many people who previously purchased entry level DSLRs did so to achieve better image quality. They did not understand how to use the gear, and they struggled to learn. Nonetheless, they were committed to learn so they could capture some awesome memories, etc. In addition, many of these same people printed photos in the past to share experiences. Today, most everyone shares images via cell phones - people rarely print or email photos:). Computational photography allows non-photo gear enthusiasts to produces great/awesome shots without high-end gear nor related know-how. The sensor size is cell phones is a major limitation, however an overwhelming majority of people do not pixel peak:). I suspect dedicated camera gear will remain, but the following will be limited to the enthusiasts and pros.

Thanks for your reply about the ND filters Mark. You nailed it with the stopping down, very nice smoothness. I have 3 Irix brand ND filters, a 4, 6, and 10. As I live on an island in the Pacific just off the Queensland coast of Eastern Australia, I do alot of seascapes and find the NDs useful during stark daylight, and evening sunset cloud type scenes too, but will try more shots without the filters. I am a fan of Aperture Priority also, particularly set to the sweet spot of my lenses. Thanks again for the video.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld Год назад
Glad to be of help Rick!:) Closing down the aperture is a great method to slow the shutter, however this is much more challenging on a bright day. If the day is bright, I would consider a variable ND filter which provides additional flexibility:).

Glad to see you back! Those videos are so relaxing to me. I'd love to see more adventures and lens/body testings. Take care, lad! P.s. when you use aperture-priority, do you always use auto ISO settings with it? I always shoot in manual but sometimes i miss an awesome shot because my settings weren't right.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld Год назад
Appreciate your post/feedback Alexander!:) I almost always leave manually control the ISO. I leave the ISO at 100 > adjust the aperture > check shutter speed and exposure > if the shutter speed is too slow to maintain proper exposure and I desire a faster shutter, I will quickly bump the ISO ... I may create a quick video on my workflow:).
@alexanderabrashev1366
@alexanderabrashev1366 Год назад
@@RealWorld Thanks for the response! From watching most of your videos, you talk about using auto iso in A and S-priority modes, but I understand that it is ideal for you to manually control it. Would you recommend me just using M mode, or to focus on A and S-priority instead?
@rickb9867
@rickb9867 Год назад
Hi Mark. Enjoyed this tour with you through that scenery. Just a question. For your water shots, did you use an ND filter? If so which one please? You sure have plenty of great spots to hike through there. Thanks
@RealWorld
@RealWorld Год назад
Thanks for the post Rick!:) That was my first trip to that part of the country - it was an awesome adventure:). Great question on the water shots and ND filter ... I did not use an ND filter. You might be asking how I slowed the shutter:). I have one or two video on taking water shots without an ND filter which might be of help. Nonetheless, I dropped the ISO to 100 and closed the aperture all the way down (being the woods helped as well). I do not ND filters but did not have one with me. I like the following variable ND filter from K&F: amzn.to/3wjd3lA ... I also have stepping rings from them with work well (step rings allow you to use one filter on multiple lenses just ensure you get a relatively large filter).

Hi there. I have one out of the blue question and would appreciate if somebody could answer it: I bought an external microphone for my Nikon D3400. Only once at home I've discovered that the D3400 doesn't have a connection. Is there any way around to sort this problem. Many thanks.
@RealWorld
@RealWorld 6 месяцев назад
a bit late to reply, however i have an external mic and D3400:). you will need to use something like the Zoom H1 to capture the audio and sync the video and audio in post edit. i use adobe premier which can sync the video and audio:). i have a video in my channel on the Zoom H1 as well:).

An all out fight back! Can you imagine? That was a great little photo adventure. You used Aperture priority, but was the ISO set to auto? If so it didn't seem to effect the light did it? Really glad to see you back on the youtuibe band wagon 👍📸
@RealWorld
@RealWorld Год назад
Thanks for the post Tudor!:) I thought the same as I walked the trail - it would be a bloody battle for certain:). I prefer to leave my ISO at 100 and manually control it. If the scene is relatively dark and I have opened the aperture all the way but yet the exposure is still too dark, I will bump the ISO. I may create a quick video on my thought process when taking a photo:).

Some of those landscapes are breathtaking... is the D600 full frame or crop? How did you get the landscapes so wide, did you use a special setting or just cropped it like that in Lightroom?

Curious... What is your workflow for picking an Aperture setting? I sort of confine myself to 2.8, 5.6 and F11. Love to know how you decide. Dave from Virginia Beach, VA
@RealWorld
@RealWorld Месяц назад
Thanks for the post/question Dave!:) I typically look for good bokeh and then taking natural light and shutter speed into consideration. If I see the shutter is too low for the subject (perhaps it is moving or still but not well lit), I will raise the ISO and keep an eye on the shutter speed (I have the ISO set to a function button for quick adjustments).

Do you use auto iso?
@RealWorld

i typically set to 100 and adjust as needed. i like to control the ISO and leave it as low as possible to minimize the grain/noise, however i will increase as needed to capture the shot:).

lol - i thought the same when i was out there!:) it was crazy - i was quarter mile off the beach in low tide. there was nobody around and i caught the crane and then the eagle. i carefully stepped closer and closer to the eagle taking various shots (i have more that i did not include in the video). when he took flight, i was ready and snapped a handful of shots catching a few great ones along the way:).
