Atom, I really appreciate your thoughtful guides! So many times I could consult your channel before investing into equipment.

So, I love your channel, just watched like 50 of your videos in the last two weeks... I wanted to add to those who might be interested, that cheap light boxes are now real. I found a small (about 30cm large) lightbox on Amazon for 13€ with integrated leds and micro usb plug. If you take pictures of two models per month like me, it's a nice lightbox for cheap, doesn't take too much space and doesn't need any work to be used =)

I did the same thing with a cardboard paper ream box. In addition to the paper backdrop, I spray painted the inside of the box white to help bounce the light. I also used an old white t-shirt that I cut up for the sides and top holes. Instead of clamp lights, I used two bendy desk lamps and my anglepoise lamp.

imjeff1170d That sounds like a more durable setup with better results, with little additional expense.

Thanks for the information on the Foldio. I do have a collapsible tent style that came with two molten hot halogen folding lights. I did finally replace the bulbs with LEDs, which work much better. The Foldio looks perfect for doing a single mini.

Atom, just wanted to let you know I got my Dual-LED Foldio today and I am SUPER satisfied with it! Mine only cost me $60 plus shipping on eBay. It's really improved my miniature photography significantly. Thanks for the advice.

Hey Atom, love your videos. I just got back into table top wargaming after dabbling in it as a kid. I never had a resource like RU-vid when doing warhammer stuff way back, just want to thank you for taking the time to do these vids.

I wish you'd done this video a couple of weeks ago when I was looking for instructions on building a DIY lightbox. The one I found used white foamcore board and I thought it looked a little iffy but it was all I could find. I think I'm going to switch to the cardboard box DIY you showed, and the good news is one can always find a use for foamcore board that's lying around, even if its been cut into sections previously.

if its the all white light tent, the trick is: Find an edge where you have 2 metal thingies next to each other put the opossite edge on the floor so the box is laying diagonally. push down the edge and you should end up with a v shape formed only with 2 faces. fold them and you should end up with a square the size of only 1 face of the cube then grab a corner with one hand and grab the opossite corner with the other keep one corner still, twist the other corner once, itll form an 8. twist it once more and let your arm be guided by the metal cables, they will make a weird thing but they will fold into themselves and all merge in a circle. all you gotta do is twist. and then you should have it in the bag!

A few years later, and we now have leds, you may want to test them with this setup..better light, less power(i think) and less heat.

Great video. I wish I'd seen this before buying my "LimoStudio" folding light box - which is more like your collapsible tent thing. It cost about half of a Foldio but seems about half as useful - it takes up more space than I need for miniature photography. I'll definitely be buying a Foldio as soon as funds permit!

Great post! A Cyclotron is a particle accelerator. Cyclorama is probably the word you were looking for...(even though that's more usually horizontal) Seamless backdrop? Cheers

Looking at their site the Foldio is currently down to $39 which is only a little more expensive than 3 clamp lamps and bulbs. Seems like the slightly higher expense is worth it to not have to do the set up each time with the homemade solution.

Could you potentially use LED stripes instead of bulky big lamps ? I have a simple white-box with just one LED stripe (mounted on the top lid), and for most jobs it creates enough light to produce decent photos. But I was thinking about building a new one, bigger - so I could photograph bigger models or larger units. So I thought about building a box, just like the one you presented in this video, but due to limited space in my hobby area - I was thinking about using same LED stripes, but now x3 (top, left and right). Would you think it could work - what sort of modifications, to such a box would you recommend (something to diffuse that light a little bit ? )

Sure, decent quality LED strips would work fine. Thanks for watching!

Awesome video! I built a lightbox out of a cardboard box and a white bedskirt i wasnt using. It works great; however, i only have my phone for a camera. Any recommendations on a good cheap/intro camera for a beginner photographer/ painter. Maybe you could do a video on this if ya havent already.

I use my cell phone and seem to have good picture quality with the fluorescent lights with no lightbox. I want to try a light box to see how much better my pictures get.

Use correct white balance on your camera, and your choice of bulb shouldn't matter. Alternatively shoot in raw format so you can adjust white balance properly in post processing. Also, it might be possible to build a more compact setup with LED strips (direct light inside the box), though I'd have to think that properly one through before actually recommending it.
@tabletopminions
@tabletopminions 10 лет назад
I agree, properly setting your camera's white balance will save headaches later in post-production. It depends on the camera as to how easy this is, however. People should check their instructions for their specific camera to see how easy or difficult this might be for them. Thanks for watching!

tabletopminions to get the colors right: have you tried shooting raw with a "gray card"? if not, I recommend it. it's easy, cheap, & very effective.

Ha! What future me knows that four year old video guy doesn’t know is that you can just tape a piece of white paper to a box, use that as your backdrop and vwala, good pic. I learned it in the future from a guy that keeps company with a cello-man. Weird dude but he comes up with winners sometimes.

Splendid video, very useful! I think I have settled on getting myself a Foldio. But I've got a question (maybe a bit of a dumb one); which of the two available variants should I get - Dual LED or Adapter? Or furthermore, do you think it's worth investing the extra buck for a Foldio2? I figure I won't be photographing many larger works, but I'm interested in hearing your take on it. Cheers in advance!

I've got a Foldio. It's really great. Only downside is it's not big enough for very large flyers/tanks. Here's a selection of Death Korp I photographed with it: www.flickr.com/photos/piratephil/sets/72157645133608950 I think I only white balanced a few of the photos.
@PhilipSpence
@PhilipSpence 8 лет назад
+Alexander Misailidis I think when I took those the lights weren't in the most optimal setup. I've also only taken those on an iPhone, so if you had a better camera with manual settings you'd get much better results.

this bulbs you use, how do i correct in photohop? you could indicates a tutorial? i known how to use the program, looks like decreasing the yellow, but im not sure.

Paulo: Old comment, but for the benefit of current viewers... Pretty much all raw developers and photo editors have a dedicated white balance tool. All you need to do is to aim at a white area (i e the backdrop, or cyclotron as Atom just taught us) and the image will be color corrected.
