The whole 'You have to dress well at all times a model' thing is so dumb imo. 99.9% of photo shoots will either have outfits ready for you when you get there or will tell you what to wear beforehand. I'll be honest. I'm kind of upset at ANTM, because I think it groomed a lot of young girls to "do whatever it takes," to be a model, including things they are uncomfortable with. This show, instead of giving models a voice, kind of took it away even more. Models used to have more influence in the 80s and 90s. Now they're just seen as hangers.

Tyra seemed to be very jealous of some girls. She would give really contradictory advice and critiques to girls, and then berate them for Taking the advice. She wod tell girls to show their personalities, but then not like that, like this. Be real, but like I tell you. The teaches they gave the girls rarely helped with anything in the shoots, tyra was just a megalomaniac who used her power to set up girls to fail. And I agree with the comment here 100% that this abuse by tyra took power away from women by showing them how to deal with the abuse. Disgusting. That we watched some of these story lines like cassys bulimia on TV for entertainment, and tyra didn't do enough to change things. She could have, but she took her $ and ran with it.
@felixkahn4845

this is so true... they treat the girls so badly, they insult them to shreds, they take away every bit of their autonomy, and when the girls rightfully speak up against that, the judges kick them off or tear them to pieces. honestly I've never believed that "that's what it takes" to such a degree (other RU-vidrs have pointed out that Tyra herself never poses nude, for example, despite requiring competitors to do nude shoots every so often...) but I also believe that if that IS what it takes, it's absolutely inhumane and models should NOT be expected put up with it.

A lot of aspiring and current models do suffer with the exacting standards and pressures to be a certain weight, and for some, this is reflected in eating disorders. However, the fact that anorexia and bulimia are shown as model 'stereotypes' in a fashion shoot delegitimises the institutional issues that contribute to these mental illnesses. The styling and creative direction glamourise and editorialise the process of suffering with mental illness. It's just exploitative and tacky.
@ju-shi-san
@ju-shi-san 3 года назад
Isn't that true of all those stereotypes? The casting couch legitimizes misogyny, the others normalize bratty entitled behavior. None of that challenges those ingrained issues, they just wanted to be "controversial".
@gabbyb9418
@gabbyb9418 3 года назад
@@ju-shi-san yeah I think the difference is anorexia & bulimia will literally kill you, & if doesnt kill you you're usually left weak & unable to care for yourself. All those other things are bad yes but its really nothing compared to suffering those EDs cause, not only for the sufferer but for their family & friends. Medical issues that kill you are a bit different from being a brat or dealing with misogyny. Like I said those are definitely still major issues, just DIFFERENT issues with different solutions from EDs. Its not just "ew im fat", its starving yourself to the point of being on deaths door or starving to actual death.

Regarding how Melrose was essentially "punished" for winning the mini challenge, that was something I noticed consistently with this show, esp the shoots where contestants would receive more frames as a prize and the last place model would receive the least. Everytime I remember (and I watched the first 10 or so seasons) the model with the lowest amount of photos would be praised for how she could do so much with so few and up near the top or w top photo that week and the model w the most almost always ended up going home or being near the bottom. I think its really unfair that they weren't judged blindly on photos alone in general.

This kinda tells me though how thankful we should be that the TV is dying out and internet culture becomes a thing because people have grown more sceptical of the information they are being fed. This feels like a healthy conversation we should be having instead of just watching this trash. I remember there was a show in germany called germany's next topmodel, ans Heidi Klum is the host, and in one episode she wanted her girls to walk in high heels on a treadmill and see who does it the longest. I just remember that one girl did that for a few minutes and then got up abd said that is retarded it just damages her feet and left. Heidi was super pissed at that, but the girl was right, what does that have to do with modelling? All of the other girls had blood blisters on their feet the day after. Why do we give these old women this much credit? I get it, Tyra and Heidi are VS angels, but this show is ridiculous and looks like a humblebrag on TV for their success...

They should not have glamorized eating disorders in any way. I personally study mental eating habits and therapy because I’m an aspiring dietician. This is a serious issue and it is just as deadly as obesity. Lack of nutrients and not eating creates a terrible relationship with food and I know many people who struggled for years to get out of that stage. A lot of it comes from lack of self confidence and depression. Bulimia and anorexia are not just stereotypes, they are serious health problems. That photo shoot concept is disgusting. Oh but good video btw. I love y’all’s reactions.

I know someone who was a model for a year and the things she told me that happened are crazy. And 99% of them were about the client's & agents etc. People telling them they're too fat, too skinny, too tall, too short etc . All day every day. Then when they're told they're "perfect" they have to change/dye their hair, only to have to change it again the following day... definitely would cause serious identity disorders. As far as eating disorders, my friend said most of the models had one kind or another. She told me it was around 80% of them. And almost all of them were addicted to diet pills. It was more of a mental addiction. They'd take several with each 'meal' and barely eat anything. I think that's something that isn't talked about as much. Luckily my friend got out and is now a producer for HGTV. She loves it :)

Azizi is so sweet. The stereotypes involving eating disorders felt awful, especially since I've dealt with anorexia myself and people didn't know until I collapsed. I'm glad you mentioned that some of the models might suffer from EDs as well, in secret. It's very "2000s Zeitgeist", though, back then having an ED was seen as a sign of vanity and obsession with weight loss rather than a serious sign of trauma and a need for control when everything else feels like you're not in the driver seat of your own life.
