Great video, gorgeous photos and lovely portrait of maiko (apprentice geisha) Kanako-san! She became a fully fledged geiko the following month. ^^

@@radicaleyemag, there are some groups sharing informations on maiko and geiko/geisha online, there are also photographers and clients of them. Here is Kanako as a maiko and as a geiko on the day of her debut. maiko: www.flickr.com/photos/laika_ac/26954475169/in/photolist-gGc2i-2ctxXqs-9sHazT-o1T2Mf-qWBoGj-pW4c1D-o4sqoi-DSyHuS-nLY9c5-o5GCe6-o2W2xk-nPaCYD-o97Q1g-coTps-nLXSXD-nKJUes-o6kSNv-H4SJov-5k6No-9sLaFJ-9sLaCs-nChB99-ZV6P4E-o2W2w8-8U7Nyd-nLqX59-nPSb9p-nKKA4X-7Wxh9B-7Wxgxi-7WxgQ2-ZV6JjE-DSyGM9-H4SSB4-7At2cH-ZV6MfQ-ZV6KHG-CmU65z-H4SQd6-o6kSKp-55vcF8-nPSbbZ-9drhNn-4ig21Z-H4UnZF-cxRYN1-axDtTV-6vrsRn-6vvE3d-6vxBSL Geiko: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dfc_LEZ_uvc.html

@@radicaleyemag You can usually tell a maiko (apprentice geisha) from a geisha or, geiko as they are called in Kyoto just from their appearance. Maiko have long hanging obi tied in a style called darari. They have their own hair styled in Japanese traditional coiffure called nihongami, special only to maiko nowadays. They wear a large kanzashi (hairpin)on the left side of their head that reflects the month, and a silver dangle bira kanzashi or princess fan, on the right. Also they tie a red ribbon at the front of their hair where the fringe is pulled back. Their kimono are called hikizuri, and maiko style has long swinging sleeves similar to furisode. Their kimono are usually brighter colors, with a bit more decoration on them. They often use a lot of pink and red on their faces to show their "cuteness". New maiko only paint the bottom lip red, while more experienced maiko usually, after a year will paint both lips red and then slightly fuller when she becomes a full fledged geisha. it takes 5 years for a maiko to train and earn the skill to become a geisha. Geisha use wigs called katsura, styled in the shimada mage style. They wear calm and subdued colors, with less pink blush on their faces. Their kimono have shorter sleeves, and less decorated. their obi are folded in and tucked and not allowed to hang loose. here is an image I obtained from tumblr with no photographer listed unfortunately only that it came from yahoo images. The maiko have long sleeves, decorated hair ornaments called kanzashi, and hanging obi while the geisha is a bit more simple in appearance and wearing black with a folded obi. The hair ornaments they have looks to be maple leaves, which is the main style worn during November. imgur.com/a/cjAS5Jh Also! In terms of learning their names, well that's sometimes hard to do- but, photographers who frequent the area sometimes befriend locals who share the information such as names of these women and girls. If you can read Japanese in front of their Okiya, their names are written on wooden blocks at the entrance in descending order.

How did you get your film to and from Tokyo without having it trashed by the airline security x-ray machines.? I'm hearing horror stories about film bring damaged getting into/ out from the States...😦
@radicaleyemag
@radicaleyemag 4 года назад
On the way there I completely messed up and had the film checked into the hold not thinking about the high powered scanners they use. On the way back I asked for it all to be hand checked which was completely fine with security. There was a little bit of damage to the film, but nothing major. I also chose to take Ektar 100 which is less reactive to the x rays.

@@radicaleyemag from the title I thought that in this video you'd have shot a series of photos of a Geisha. But it turned out that among all the other photos that you took you had the lucky chance to take one portrait of a Geisha, therefore: clickbait 😇
